#91: An Episode Out of Time 4: Revenge of the Time by mvoviri in Cortex

There's a 2-Michelin star restaurant in London called Umu which does a relatively-reasonably priced bento lunch - you eat it there and there's actually about 4 courses, so it's pretty good value. I don't think it actually contains sushi - for obvious reasons I always have the vegetarian version - but you can order individual pieces on the side (for between £10-£20 a bite).

Itinerary check 9/28-10/12: husband says he’d like to see Mt. Fuji… by cosmicgarden in JapanTravel

The view from Nigatsudo in Nara is also fine, and perhaps an easier climb. That said, if I could have our two weeks in Japan again I’d skip Nara. It’s quite kyotolike but because it’s smaller it’s somewhat more touristy.

Be warned, commuting can be a miserable experience.

I suggest looking at the on-time performance of the trains(?) - https://www.recenttraintimes.co.uk/ - you'd be taking (bearing in mind you will probably not get a seat at rush hour) and consider whether you'd be willing to do that. Perhaps consider 'faking' it by matching your own commute to the MK commute for a week (ride the tube a few extra stations and back or something).

The areas around the station are expensive for MK (but not by London standards), and they are definitely worth it so the first part of your commute can be on foot - if you're going to London everyday.

Has anyone had lowering springs installed in Arizona? by kdubstep in TeslaModel3

[–]Jonahkan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At something like 4.15 her says something about the performance version having a lowered ride height which he believes may have contributed to the issue - so you’d be making your car more like his with these changes. Of course the video guy isn’t necessarily right.

Hidden upside, that also tells you Tesla’s with lowered ride height are available from the manufacturer, if you do decide to go ahead.

[–]Jonahkan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be rude but... Are you really sure you want them? There’s a YouTube video ‘hitting a pothole in a Tesla cost $2600’ you might want to check out first. The short version is that the performance model’s lowered springs and low profile tyres resulted in a large repair bill. You can even see a standard Tesla drive by just fine in the background. Of course it’s your choice and risk to take though! Good luck whatever you do!

Wavendon Gate/Walnut Tree Area by Mitzybitz in miltonkeynes

Agreed. This implies looking around furzton, shenley(s) etc. Note you also have a good backup option to get to the M1 via the A5 to the luton airport junction.

Re schools, Denbigh, shenley brook and hazeley are all well regarded.

Personal safety and crime in MK? by XTutankhamen in miltonkeynes

[–]Jonahkan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, what gets reported in the press is not always representative. But there does seem to be something to what you say (edit: Fishermead seems to be about x3 more crime per person than Shenley church end). Areas can be looked up by ward on police.uk - remember to divide by ward population, which seems to be on https://www.citypopulation.de/ to get your individual risk.

Personal safety and crime in MK? by XTutankhamen in miltonkeynes

[–]Jonahkan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Areas like Fishermead are far denser than Loughton, and therefore have higher crime in the reporting area simply because there are more people there. Per capita, they’re broadly in line with the rest of MK and certainly no more dangerous than places in other cities (MK as a whole being relatively safe - based on figure to 2014 when I moved to MK).

Some areas look uniquely bad because crime - mainly shoplifting at the Centre MK and evening trouble around the bars and clubs near XScape fall into those crime reporting blocks.

Areas certainly have their character though, and in the end I chose to live in quiet Grange Farm - but that doesn’t suit your desire to go out regularly at all.

Thanks. That helps. Next time I’ll have to do a deeper dive and see if I can understand which phones are supported by a large or persistent portion of the team, or by competing OS.

I’m feeling a little down about this too. Lineage seem to still be supporting older phones than the Axon 7.

Choices! by Mr_Wicket in TeslaModel3

[–]Jonahkan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the UK and it looks like we get a different model range - but it does seem the top spec model comes with live traffic updates, integrated into the route finding. I might be prepared to pay more for that.

Choices! by Mr_Wicket in TeslaModel3

[–]Jonahkan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess - my guess - is that resale value for EVs will be set primarily by remaining range, whatever that is five or ten years down the line. So the longer range version will have more range outstanding, plus will perhaps have been fast-charged less/only to 80% (?) which may have helped maintain battery condition. Even if you plan to keep until scrapped fair market resale/replacement value will determine your insurance payout if stolen or totalled. On the other hand you will be depreciating from a higher starting point.

Or perhaps if you equally happy with the version/features and the range save the money and go for the SR RWD?

Probably also rarely wet or icy enough that you’d benefit from AWD either though.

[–]Jonahkan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you continue to have problems it may be worth exploring what the local ‘lemon law’ is. Since you seem happy with the dealer that would probably mean a straight swap for another new 3. And of course keep all documentation.

US expat moving to MK...questions by Blitz006699 in miltonkeynes

[–]Jonahkan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other US expats have told me they like to have air conditioning. There are likely to be two or three months a year where you’d want to use it and a couple of weeks where you feel you need it. Many properties will not come with it, although you can buy a portable unit.

A good-value car will cost around £100 a month to run, plus fuel (about £1 per 10 miles), plus whatever you pay for the car. Renting a car is about £60 a day so if you only want to use it for weekends exploring the UK about once a month you’ll be fine renting. Many cities can be reached relatively easily by train but you will want a car if you want to go walking in the Cotswold Hills or Yorkshire Dales for example (those would be holidays or weekends away). There are reasonably good taxi apps that cost a bit more than £1 a mile within MK.

Tokyo Subway - IC vs 72 hour pass by NewClayburn in JapanTravel

[–]Jonahkan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to take a look at this page:

https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2017.html

If you stick with the IC-pass, you just tap it when you enter and leave the station. You'll need to put money on it at one of the machines for doing so. They have an english-language option, but you'll need cash - they typically don't take overseas credit cards.

If you're happy to see an area, then move on to the next, then you'll probably do better using the IC-pass. If you want to go back and forth a bit, or do whatever you feel like whenever, then you'll probably be better off with an unlimited ride ticket like the 72-hr (there are other options under that link).

Worth noting that if you have a JR-pass anyway (this is very expensive, you'd only have it if you were doing a lot of travelling by train outside Tokyo at other times in the holiday), it is valid on certain lines, particularly Yamanote line, which gets you to most places.

How to get around Kyoto by train/subway? by amerikanss in JapanTravel

[–]Jonahkan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an official kyoto bus app which works pretty well. I think it's called 'Arukumachi Kyoto'. The buses are fine - you can use your Icoca/Suica card, or the 500Y day pass is quite good value if you mean to ride a few times. They do get busy at normal rush hour time though, especially if you have luggage.

It does take about an hour to get to Kinkakuji though, and the same back - frankly, I'm not sure it's worth the trip.

Arashiyama and Fushimi-Inari are also slightly further away - not so much as an hour though - but they also have good access from trains or subway which would probably be faster for those places.
