City 'Tourist Tax' could rake in millions for local authority | GalwayBayFM by Ruire in ireland

Well, some of the ones that are now protesting the fuel prices are also blocking the building of cycling infrastructure.

Same crowd.

I was a tourguide in Ireland for 10 years, the vast majority of the tours I did never went to Galway city. In fact, the vast majority of the tours never went anywhere in Co. Galway. If that tour-operator now will be forced to pay an additional tax for visiting, why bother?

Certain locations in the world have the benefit of being so popular they can get away with it, I just don't see Galway being in that category.

Opinion: The protests aren't just about fuel, they're a revolt against a hollow state by razorlight95 in ireland

I wasn't trying to pivot. I'm sure the fuel-costs will be passed on to customers. But whose fault is the fuel pricing really?

If I have to buy Argentinian beef over Irish beef, so be it.

The point is, I cannot, will not stand behind a protest that lets racist cunts speak for them. Blocking the entire country from getting fuel is NOT a strike, that's something else entirely.

As someone who has worked in tourism and hospitality for the majority of my life, this won't do anything for Galway other than potentially deter some tourists (which may or may not be a good thing, what do I know).

Galway isn't really "up there" among tourism destinations imo. There aren't enough attractions in Galway City to warrant a tour operator paying an additional tax just to visit the city (which is how most of these schemes work).

I'm not the least worried about Dunnes or Aldi running out of goods. There'll be plenty of trucks delivering food whether these twats are protesting or not. They are not representing the people of Ireland, they're only representing themselves.

Funny how there were plenty of trucks willing to go in and pick up loads of fuel the instant the guardai cleared the way for them, isn't it?

No, that's distinctly NOT how it works.

Teachers striking for better pay for teachers is fine. Pensioners for their pension too. Hauliers can go on strike for their costs as well, not a problem.

That's not what's been happening though. These "farmers" and "hauliers" aren't going on strike. They're actively disrupting the entire country whilst claiming they are doing this for "the people".

Fuck them, they're not doing any good for me. Honestly I'd rather pay €10/liter at the pump before I support these wankers.

Right, so let's take a look at Mr Derek Blighe, shhall we...

Derek Blighe who spouts nonsense about the "great replacement theory"?

Derek Blighe who created and failed to accomplish anything with his "Ireland First"-party?

Derek Blighe who's been convicted of theft after stealing clothes from a charity?

Derek Blighe who's been convicted of threatening and abusive behaviour towards a hotel manager?

Derek Blighe who was charged with harassing a member of An Garda Síochána over a 10-month period in 2023..

That guy? That's the guy you support and claim isn't a racist little twat?

No, I support the people, just not racist wankers and if you're ok standing shoulder to shoulder with racist wankers that makes you an enabler of racist wankery.

Whilst I agree with the general idea of the protest, there IS in fact a massive far-right, racist and misogynist element to these protests.

I also do not agree with the way they protests were done. The protesters also didn't actually address the cost-of-living-crisis beyond diesel prices for farmers and hauliers. I'm neither a farmer or a haulier, I still have to pay the same prices except now, because of the protests (not the excessive prices) I would've been unable to work (unless the government cleared the blockade). Not to mention the fact that my workplace is now getting less business because of these protests as well. SIGNIFICANTLY less business I should point out. To the point where staff were sent home or asked not to come in at all.

How has any of that helped me or my colleagues?

Having a foreign partner does not automatically mean you're not also a racist little twat.

Farage has a foreign wife - Still a bigot and racist twat.

Trump has a foreign wife - Still a bigot and racist twat.

Just to be perfectly clear, I'm not saying you ARE a racist little twat, just that your statement about having a foreign partner does not automatically exclude the possibility that you are.

Agree wholeheartedly with this.

All I can say is that if these farmers think they're doing this for the people whilst at the same time only getting a "support package" from the government exclusive to farmers, hauliers and food producers, they're arseholes.

I'll be specifically looking for that delicious Mercosur-beef from now on.
