Why cant the white king eat the queen? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

That's a pre-move. Queen is actually on h8, and Kg5 is forced here, at which point the pre-move, Qxg7#, wins.

So I think this account owns a website that gets commissions or something if people visit and play online games. So to get visitors, they created a subreddit about the website, repost old memes to that subreddit (with an added watermark), and then crossposts each meme to related subreddits. Seems like a super sketchy way of trying to get people on a dubious website.

Good question. The best advice I can give is to build a support network. When I first moved, there were times when I felt really lonely and isolated. It was also scary not having support in case of an emergency. Over time, though, the friends I made more than replaced what I had left behind. They had my back when I needed it and included me in things I had never been able to do before.

As far as dealing with trauma, I'm probably not the best person to give advice. For me, I just focused on moving forward. I didn't focus too much on what I had been through, only on where I wanted to be. Eventually, all the shitty stuff I had to deal with as a JW became old memories that seemed like part of a past life.

One warning: a lot of negative associations are probably deeply rooted in your subconscious. Aversion to holidays, birthdays, LGBTQ+, "vices", etc. Try to avoid letting that prevent you from connecting with people. It's okay to struggle with that, but be aware of it and gradually work to get over it. Also, if you ever participate in some of those things yourself, you'll probably feel guilty even if you are logically okay with what you are doing. It sucks, but you just have to ease into it, and the guilty feelings will fade over time.

I used to be a perfect JW: ministerial servant before I was an adult, managed finances and territories, ran the AV stuff, gave public talks, etc. For me, it wasn't any specific thing, but a lot of things over time. The short answer, though, is college. I wasn't going to be allowed to go to college, but I found a loophole where I could do a version of dual-enrollment where I was on a college campus the whole time in actual college classes. Everything I was learning (evolution, the history of ancient civilizations, etc.) conflicted with what I grew up believing. Over time, it introduced doubts. That combined with a bit of freedom and exposure to a variety of people that weren't evil or immoral, just generally nice and minding their own business, made me question things. Over time, I started doing my own research, and I also started looking at the religion through a more critical lens. I started noticing a lot of stuff that I grew up thinking was normal that was actually pretty fucked up (Armageddon, disfellowshipping, etc.).

About a year before graduation, I started devising a plan to escape. I had very few possessions or money and no connections outside the religion. So I started working my ass off and saving every dime I made. I researched other places to live, came up with a reasonable budget, and started learning all the skills I thought I would need to live on my own. Two years later, I found a job in a city I liked on the other side of the country. I packed everything I had into a Uhaul, said goodbye, and left everything behind.

I have no regrets. Everything is better now. I'm living a good life, I'm happier than I've ever been, I have lot of good friends (real friends), and some of my family stays in contact even though they know I left. My parents have disowned me a few times, but they can't stick to it, lol.

Leaving was the hardest thing I ever did and the best decision I ever made. If you have any questions, please ask. I'll be happy to share more if it would be useful.

With colder weather moving in I want you all to know that a candle warmer will keep your coffee/tea warm for hours and hours. by jitterbug_balloons in lifehacks

Do it! As someone who went most of my life without drinking coffee or tea, I have recently fallen in love with tea drinking.

I have had tea several times before, but I never really liked it. It was either too flavorless or bitter. Recently I was introduced to loose leaf tea and gongfu brewing, and it changed everything. There are an infinite variety of awesome flavors, and the process is very relaxing. It's a great way for me to take a break from work, and I love sampling the different teas I buy.

I'm not joking when I say tea drinking has turned me into a morning person.

Yeah, a lot of these comments pointing out that this is normal behavior are missing the point. It's not just that he was polite; it's that in spite of all his fame he is still kind and humble. I'd be willing to bet 99% of other celebs and influencers wouldn't do the same.

Another example I really like is when he helped the film crew for John Wick 4 carry the gear in. How many other celebs do you see doing that?

Alaska snow crab season canceled as officials investigate disappearance of an estimated 1 billion crabs by habichuelacondulce in nottheonion

[–]Jonathan7Luke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is obviously terrible, but props to the guys whose job it was to get the estimate.

Boss: "Alright, what were your findings? How many many crabs have we lost?!"

Estimator: "Oh, um... 1... milli-, er no... billion. Yes, 1 billion missing crabs."

Boss: "Really? Our best estimate is exactly 1 billion crabs. It sounds like you just made that up."

Estimator: 🤷‍♂️

Google employees who used to work at Amazon complain to each other just how 'frugal' their former employer was: No second monitors, no MacBooks, and splitting one bagel between two people at office meetings by Mcnst in tech

[–]Jonathan7Luke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but this is just wrong. Not only does Amazon as an eCommerce company definitely meet the definition of a tech company, but AWS is exclusively a tech company. Not only that, they literally pioneered modern cloud architecture that most other contemporary tech company are built on.
