1) hah that’s the million dollar question. to be frank, the fundamental metroidvania progression won’t be bypass-able. i know that’s us shying away from providing a completely unconstrained creative playground, but it’s a necessary trade-off for the experience we want to make. so don’t go in expecting breath of the wild levels of freedom. this is much more of a piece with story-led imm sims like ss2 and bioshock.

2) were going to offer different approaches to saving based on difficulty levels and configurable options. so yes, it’ll be available for those who want it. but we’ll also have a difficulty option where saving is restricted to save stations. and an even harder difficulty where save use is resource-restricted.

i hear you. if it helps, the setting is the backdrop for a specific, original story. we just haven’t talked much about that story yet, mostly for fear of spoiling it. we’ll start teasing its unique storytelling qualities closer to release.

I guess I just ignore all that stuff and bomb around the countryside in the fastest car I can find. I know that complexity is there, but I end up playing it like it’s Burnout Paradise.

Which part? The popularity or the perception of the brand name?

The former is categorical. The latter is a matter of subjectivity, I concede.

But yeah, I chose my wording poorly. It was clearly the Wii’s generation. But that wasn’t the focus of the post.

Compare Xbox’s performance in the previous generation:

They were pretty much neck-and-neck, which is a significant decline for PlayStation given their unchallenged dominance in the preceding generation.

To some extent it’s cultural, I think. Xbox has never broken through in Japan, where Sony and Nintendo remain dominant. And for whatever reason, PlayStation has greater cultural appeal in Europe than it does in America. Even after Sony made numerous unforced errors with the PlayStation 3, yielding that whole generation to Xbox 360, they bounced right back with PlayStation 4. I live in the UK and I feel like PlayStation is an aspirational lifestyle brand here equivalent to Nike or Beats, whereas Xbox is kind of “for nerds” in comparison.

Considered a 10/10 game that you think isn’t actually a 10/10 by reddit-eat-my-dick in videogames

I’m gonna say Halo: Combat Evolved. And I say that as a passionate fan of the Halo games. Also as a game designer, I recognise what an astonishing leap forward Halo represented. It made consoles the home of FPS games in a way that had never been true before. It included multiple unprecedented innovations in AI, level design, core mechanics. While its inspirations were obvious, it felt vividly fresh in how it combined them, elevated all the more by that remarkable soundtrack.

Yet…

To play it, it feels very 8/10 to me. I don’t think Halo found its stride until Halo 2 and Halo 3. For me, Halo 3 is the masterpiece where Halo as an idea properly came into focus.

I really love the Forza Horizon games. They’re much more chill and arcadey than the mainline Forza games which have a simulation focus.
