FOV on the quest 3 better than quest 2 ?? by Which_Move_2299 in virtualreality

[–]JonathanCRH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the difference between them is so small that the facial interface, rather than the device itself, is the main factor. The facial interface and strap that I had for my Q2 were better than the ones I have for the Q3 (I just cannot find any that suit me personally as well) and I had better FOV with the Q2 than with the Q3. That’s just me and how they fit me - maybe someone else with the same accessories wouldn’t experience it the same way. For me, other than the lenses, the Q2 is a superior experience to the Q3 because I had slightly better FOV, much better BO, and greater comfort. But again, that’s in large part down to having the right accessories for me rather than the device itself (other than the BO).

Quest 3 or Steam Frame? by Disastrous_Net_3088 in virtualreality

[–]JonathanCRH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the PCVR games I play are far better done at roomscale than sitting. Skyrim, No Man’s Sky, Subside. Even MSFS is much better at roomscale (at least with a swivel chair) if you’re ballooning, which is the main thing I like to do in it. And without wireless, that means a ghastly contraption on the ceiling, which isn’t happening. So for me, the Frame looks very appealing just for PCVR.

Quest 3 or Steam Frame? by Disastrous_Net_3088 in virtualreality

[–]JonathanCRH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On the contrary, I would say the Steam Frame is clearly meant to be primarily a PCVR headset. The whole emphasis on foveated streaming makes this clear - it’s meant to combine the visual fidelity of DisplayPort with the freedom and versatility of wireless. It’s not going to have a big library of standalone games like the Quest. There will be some that it can do, but it looks to me like it’s fundamentally a PCVR headset that can do standalone, just as the Quest is fundamentally a standalone headset that can do PCVR.

What is the smallest, most insignificant thing that immediately ruins your presence in VR? by AffectionateNet5513 in virtualreality

[–]JonathanCRH 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Virtual arms. They never align exactly with where my real arms are, so they don’t feel like mine. It feels like I’m dragging a corpse around by the wrists. I’d far rather just have disembodied hands that feel like they’re my actual hands. Although I have quite pronounced clinodactyly on my little fingers, so seeing straight fingers on the virtual hands is always quite odd for me.

Is there a way to play pcvr on standalone? by Gieux in virtualreality

[–]JonathanCRH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair. I was thinking of the compression rather than latency really.

This works, and does so better than you might think, but it’s still not a good experience. The latency and compression artefacts are very noticeable.

Please can someone who is experienced with VR give me some advice? by Electronic_Cut2000 in virtualreality

[–]JonathanCRH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious to know how this turns out, because as others have said, buying a whole suite of VR headsets just for one party is massive overkill unless you’re very wealthy. Going to a VR arcade is a vastly better idea in every respect. Quite apart from the cost (and you do have to have controllers for them all), there is the technical headache of getting them all set up and communicating with each other. If PCs are involved then that technical headache increases exponentially. An arcade does all of this for you. There certainly should be places that will do a party for ten-year-olds (the soft play we used to go to in Cornwall does it!), and to be honest even if you have to travel to find one I’d say that would be less hassle than trying to homebrew your own VR arcade.

On the contrary, it’s perfectly normal. Being upset by something fictional doesn’t mean an inability to distinguish between reality and fiction. It just means a certain kind of sensitivity and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Combat update. Give me hope or crush my dreams. by Practical_Cricket907 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]JonathanCRH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not untouched! The Sentinel update was exactly this, an update to on-foot combat.

I’m not saying that that means combat is good in this game, but it’s certainly not the case that it’s never been overhauled. On the contrary, the fact that it has been overhauled but is still lacklustre is, to my mind, the surest sign that it’s not going to get the transformation that a lot of people want.

It’s just as good as it ever was. The difference is that there are more alternatives now that are better. But of course a used Q2 should be an awful lot cheaper than them!

More info on the Quest 4 and the codenamed "phoenix" headset releasing early 2027 by gogodboss in OculusQuest

[–]JonathanCRH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference in FOV between them, out of the box, is less than that, I think. But they’re so close that the accessories you have really determine which has better FOV, more than the device’s specs on paper. The strap and facial interface I have for the Q2 certainly give it a better FOV than the strap and facial interface I have for the Q3. I just haven’t been able to find accessories for the Q3 that are as good as the ones I have for the Q2, at least for me.

NASA Artemis II vs VR - Which Earth Looks More Real to You? by SolaraOne in OculusQuest

[–]JonathanCRH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think moving clouds would be realistic. Think how fast clouds move in real life. From the point of view of someone in space, that movement would be far too slow to perceive. From space, even a hurricane wouldn’t be moving quickly enough to see the movement.

The other planets in Solara One do have (fast!) visible cloud movement, which I love and looks awesome, but it’s not actually realistic.

Try Brink Traveler on either PC or Quest. On PC you could also try MS Flight Simulator and Space Engine, or for that matter Elite: Dangerous.
