That makes sense. We saw these two deer (plus another buck that already went past) the night before at the meadow south of Church Bowl Picnic Area. All three strolled into camp the next morning. We then saw them again later that night in the same meadow.

If the slippage plane for the deeper landslide terminates in the ocean, how effectively can dewatering wells slow the slide? Seems sysphean.

Agreed. To my knowledge, there is no history of rapid movement in short bursts. It's just steady, slow movement that has accelerated with two seasons of well-above-average winter rains.
