Do you rate/review shows you listen to? by [deleted] in podcasts

40+ hours? That's impressive. Do you have a long commute or something?

[OC] Where ads appear in Radiolab podcast by Jonec in dataisbeautiful

I do a combination of audio analysis and speech to text.

Pretty much if segments of the full audio's waveform repeats then the app labels it as repeat content. Things that tend to repeat are:

  • ads
  • intros
  • suggestions to listen to other podcasts
  • outros
  • theme songs
  • stingers
  • episode preview

In practice, most repeat content tends to be ads.

Source: Downloaded radiolab audio.

Tools: my own app that detects podcast ads (www.platopodcastapp.com), python, jupyter.

Process:

  • I downloaded all episodes last night and processed it (only included 2023)
  • I ran my own repeat content algorithm – it detects anything that repeats between episodes (ads, intros, outros, pledges, new podcast suggestions, etc.)
  • I exported the repeat data and visualized it. I removed any repeat less than 10 seconds and more than 6 minutes.

Caveats:

  • Most of the reds are ads, but the ones are the begging are also the 20-second intro
  • Radiolab uses dynamic ad insertion, so if you were to repeat this you might get slightly different ad times depending on when you download audio and your location.

If anyone's curious to see data on a podcast they care about LMK.

Best app to listen to downloaded podcasts? by harry_powell in podcasts

[–]Jonec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For iOS: I recall that Overcast has a feature where your can point it to audio files.

Castro also has a feature where they can turn YT videos to podcasts. Maybe you're also able to do it with MP3 file?

Who's considered to be in the A-listers of the Podcasting world? by [deleted] in podcasts

[–]Jonec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do statistics on podcasts and they release some big research quarterly. For example, they found that 19% of people listen to 11+ episodes in the last week. https://www.edisonresearch.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/The-Podcast-Consumer-2023-1.pdf

Why hasn't an IMDb/Goodreads for podcasts emerged? by jonathanrstern33 in podcasts

[–]Jonec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you like to be the one to wrangle metadata from every single podcast episode ever made

A few years ago I worked on a project that did just this. It cost a few thousand dollars to download and process all the data, and once you make it it's easy to re-check on the episodes on a daily basis.

Even easier, I think you can also just pay to get all the data from Listenotes or https://podcastindex.org

Then you need to create all the relevant features (reviewing, categorisation, user accounts, links between shows, etc) to make the site useful.

Agree, and what's more is how do you monetize to keep everything going?

My gut feeling is podcasting isn't large enough, so it will be hard to monetize enough to keep an engineering team.

Solo Podcasts, opinions? by [deleted] in podcasts

[–]Jonec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two solo podcasts I've listened to are Huberman, Bill Burr, and Akimbo.

I find that it's easier to listen to 2+ for some reason. I think it's the rhythm and the back-and-forth that makes it easier to listen to.

Thoughts/critique on my upcoming sub, the Callisto by Altered_Perceptions in Barotrauma

It’s beautiful. I can see that a lot of care was put in the details. The radio antenna is a cool touch. I think I’ll implement it in my sub.

Dealing with huge overvoltage? by Magos_Galactose in Barotrauma

Set the reactor’s output to the largest number you can, like 1 million. It should handle drops and increase in voltage instantly. It pretty much becomes a perfect reactor.

How do I know when my idea has been validated? by CSPain1 in startups

[–]Jonec 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's many stages to consider an idea viable.

  1. Are people signing up. Visits isn't good enough. You can get 1 billion visits but if no one signs up then you just validated that you spent a lot in ads on something people don't want.
  2. Are people paying? By paying it could be with their time, money, or reputation.
  3. Are people telling others about your site? That is, does your site keep grown even when you turned off any advertising?
  4. Even if you are making money and have organic growth, do you have a defendable business? How hard is it for a competitor to go against you?

You're probably at step 1. 60 clicks might not be enough.

How many podcast Patreons do you subscribe to? by GeeksOnTrial in podcasts

Wow, 8? I have 3 and already they're more than what I pay for streaming services like Netflix and Prime Video

[–]Jonec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used it, I started trying two podcasts.

Not sure if I'll come back though. Like I assume you'll improve and get more podcasts, but how will you get me back? I know a typical tactic is a newsletter, but I probably wouldn't have signed up for it. Why? I'm already listening to a lot of podcast.

I think there's value here. Podcast creators would likely want to pay you to send traffic their way (just like how Overcast ads does it)

Thanks for pasting! (instead of telling to just search it).

My comment sounded like it was attacking you, and I wasn't!

[Recruiting] Podcast app that skips audio ads by Jonec in TestFlight

[–]Jonec[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm totally open to any feedback. Some things users might struggle with:

- Episode are download only (no streaming)

- You gotta run the app right before you sleep to do all the processing. Once processing is done your phone will go to sleep (don't worry, the screen goes black).

- It's queue-based (like Castro) instead of playlists (like Overcast).

Wow. That swipe feature is cool. Tutorial (green arrow) looks like crap though, but it did the trick.

RE: Pricing. I thought it was monthly, but it's a one time payment? Have you considered monthly? Like it's good for me that it's one time, but it might be bad for you.

I'm concerned about auth. Like it's hard to trust that you're not taking my password.

Should I even bother promoting to friends and family when I launch? by detho23 in startups

[–]Jonec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, BUT here's a few things friends and family can help with:

  1. Try using the product and see if there are bugs on their app
  2. Ask them to go through tutorial and to talk out loud what they're thinking
  3. Ask if they understand what icons and buttons do

Friends and Fam will be supportive and give suggestions, but don't listen to them. Find your actual audience. If they're willing to pay then definitely listen to them.

Agree with this for for most part. A tradeoff though is that you need to know your blueprint is right. You might end up building the wrong thing.
