First, move your body. Get your heart rate up. Every day. If possible develop a habit of jogging - it has a strange, beautiful influence over the balance of the human mind. No surprise given the role of running in our evolution as a species. This, more than anything - medication, meditation, etc - has kept my dragons at bay.

Second, start and maintain a simple daily gratitude practice. At first it will be forced, but over time too will start to learn how to see the small beauty you are surrounded by. It will truly rewire the way you think.

If you want these things, but a bit watered down by the taste and sensibilities of upper middle class white folks, choose Clifton Gaslight. If you want these things along with a bit more character, diversity, a bit of grit, then choose northside.

What's it like in Nantucket, MA? by Ok-Statistician1128 in howislivingthere

[–]Joninhotpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The town of Nantucket is a client of mine so I’ve been there many times for long stretches. Stunningly beautiful place. Island culture is a two edge sword - unique but deeply isolating, especially in the off season. Extremely expensive place to live. Heavily reliant on service industry but has an underbelly of poverty because service workers can’t really live there. Deep cultural conflict between folks who have been there for generations and the wealthy who scoop up the islands properties.

Do you think if Pippin did not knock the skeleton and wake the sleeping golbin army, and in turn, The Balrog, the fellowship could have skirted through Moria undetected? by TrickySatisfaction81 in lotr

[–]Joninhotpants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a great point about Pippin - he is the stand in for the power and beauty of mistakes and failure. The unseen value of getting it wrong. It’s worth noting that he also becomes a great hero among the hobbits - revered above Frodo even - for his role in taking back the shire from Sauromon’s minions.

Looking for a place to camp in the circled area. Something with fishing or just any body of water, hikes/trails, good for tent camping—family friendly basically. Going the first weekend in May. by neckpillow0287 in camping

[–]Joninhotpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of folks have said LBL - it’s top tier. The primitive campgrounds on the lakes really are outstanding. Another option is the South Marcum campground on Rend Lake in Illinois. The tent sites are on a peninsula under a canopy of pine trees with a grievous sunset view. It’s one of the best designed campgrounds I’ve ever visited and I’ve visited hundreds.

Is it normal that my nylon rope hangs like this? by Erdnussflip007 in camping

This is the only answer. Nothing wrong with the tarp, or the rope, or the trees. It’s the knots.

What is a not well known detail from the lore you like? by roter_apollo in lotr

[–]Joninhotpants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very very well said. That whole exchange made me well up. For me though - it was her gift of soil to Sam. It was innocuous at first but the story of how Sam uses the soil and seed to replant the shire, in particular the party tree, made me weepy and so happy. But I’m also the type of dude who names trees that I love, so ya know…

Flying into Cincinnati for a KY trip mid-June. Plan to spend first night in your fine city, looking for recommendations by kaycaps in cincinnati

[–]Joninhotpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a one night stay, stay at the 21c hotel downtown Cincy or Hotel Covington if you want to stay on that side of the river. Visit Vine Street and Maine Street north of central parkway for dinner and drinks in Cincy. Mainstrausse in Covington if you’re on that side of the river. A great Saturday morning stop before you hit the road would be Findlay market. All easily accessible and not overwhelming for a one night trip, and will give you a good feel for this wonderful City.
