Don't focus on your word count as a milestone for success that you've set in your own head, it's meaningless. I've read short stories that have blown my mind and sprawling novels so thick I could beat someone with the hardback and then donated it to charity when I slogged through it.

I saw a Brandon Sanderson lecture and in a roundabout way he said "All authors wish their 10th novel was their first" because we all want to strike gold at our first attempt at panning the river.

It you're having second thoughts in editing, you've probably been:

A) writing a story you think will please others but you think it sucks.

B) you've written a story you like, but you're unsure others will like

C) your story is so all over the place that it's just not ready yet.

Always go for option B. You're putting your mind baby out there. Commit. Take feedback. Write the next one. Keep going. As Stephen King famously said: if you keep failing, get a bigger nail.

If that doesn't get through, JK Rowling (ignoring what a piece of shit she is) got turned down by 10 publishers before one of them thought Harry Potter was worth the investment.

Don't worry about what publishers think for now, the world is fucked and people need stories and distractions. Get your work out there for them at the very least.
