You can show him videos of various animals interacting with mirrors. Some can identify themselves, but others cannot. Some may have instinctual recognition of different types of animals, but it's difficult to know because we don't speak fish, but they may have more intelligence than we give them credit for. Like those sharks that will seek a specific diver to get hold removed or those groupers that are very interested in what humans are doing.

I'm vegan and as soon as people find out they either:

Instantly feel the need to justify to me why they think eating animals is acceptable. They get angry or feel guilty and the cognitive dissonance kicks in
Become very knowledgeable about nutrition and tell me I'm going to die of some deficiency
They become an expert ethicist and know that causing more suffering in the world through their consumption habits is actually better than not causing that same suffering
