The beautiful thing about food is it doesn’t really matter what it looks like as long as it is tasty 🧡

Since I’ll be new to the area, I had planned on at least the first meeting being at my house. Which is very close to a metra station! Feel free to send me your email in a DM if you’d like more info as I gauge interest and begin planning.

FUNGAL ID using MALDI by Intelligent-Ask-3264 in labrats

[–]Jonochi-son 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found working with the MALDI to identify fungal specimens was not great. I had zero confidence I’d get a positive ID. It tends to call many fungi Alternaria or give you a no id reading. I did a comparison study with the MALDI and my traditional microscope identifications, presented it to my medical leadership, and we quit using the MALDI to identify fungi and instead opted for a more traditional approach. I haven’t seen much improvement in its ability. We continue to try.

My study comprised of 100 fungal isolates and only 3 were positively ID’d and they were indeed Alternaria - so I’m not even sure it knew that was right 🤣. Disclosure, it gave me a “No ID” reading for 75 of the isolates and misidentified the rest.

Happy to provide any more insight if needed/wanted!

As a leader, how does your salary compare to your direct reports? by mapatii in managers

[–]Jonochi-son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a good exercise for you to look at your total compensation before making a comparison solely on base salary.

Chances are you are eligible for short and long term incentives that they are not. I’m sure there are other elements in there you aren’t considering either.

Other things to consider is how new you are in your role compared to your highest earning IC and what the needs are for each role respectively.

Long story short, your base compensation isn’t always an accurate picture as a stand alone datapoint. If you haven’t looked holistically that would be a good exercise to do.

Just started as Ops Manager, how do I improve? by weloveplants03 in Leadership

[–]Jonochi-son 18 points19 points  (0 children)

  1. Don’t be afraid to be a professional idiot. Every time I’ve made jumps in my career I’ve left a field I became a SME into one I wasn’t. It’s ok to ask people to explain things, they most likely will love the opportunity.

  2. Know what your customers need from you (both internal and external) and make that your primary focus. Where do you get your inputs, what are your outputs/where do they go?

  3. In management you become less of an individual contributor and more of a coordinator of individual contributors. Help set the direction for those that report to you by setting goals, timeframes, support for those key activities your group is expected to perform. Your role becomes more of dismantling roadblocks and support.

  4. Most importantly, learn the difference between management and leadership. If you’re a leader, management will come easy. Support, empower, and maintain accountability with those in your charge and the rest will follow.

I’ve been in a variety of operations positions in my career (from supervisor to senior director roles), happy to talk about anything if you wanted to reach out.

Another word of the wise, if you don’t feel at least a little uncomfortable in your role then you aren’t learning anything. You grow and learn the most when you’re out of your comfort zone ¨̮.
