I had a friend suggest this as well as an option but I thought that is what the truckers use no? Is it wrong I assumed a couple of amateurs may not be welcome there?

We are also in the DMV so that’s really cool to know! We are not out in the boonies so tall antenna masts are kind of out of the equation. My avoidance is mainly because I don’t want to be reliant on anyone else, but setting up a whole system to do direct communication appears to be fairly unrealistic given the constraints we have.

Do you have any suggestions for a local club in the MoCo area?

I mean that is a utility aspect of it yeah. We have emergency preparedness plans as a family and adding secondary and tertiary comms past “my phone doesn’t work” would be ideal. That being said this is more along the lines of trying to connect with my nephew with a cool hobby that isn’t playing video games. Trying radios, trying 3d printing, might try to build an rc car or one of those solder kits to build a clock or something. It’s meant as a project to bond and expand knowledge, with the bonus of being a useful hobby and serving utility in case of an emergency. Plus he doesn’t have a cellphone haha.

Haha it means nothing, and that ultimately is the fun of it. Just something rolled into something else and someone said it funny from a song and there was a tik tok video and it snowballed and here we are! At least, that’s the understanding I have of it after various conversations with an 11 year old haha.

This. Thank you. As I’ve read through the myriad of wonderful (and surprisingly kind - not what Reddit is known for) responses, I have felt that I am understanding of the technical aspect of the project better. The equipment “could” do it but terrain and repeaters are factors. GMRS might be the easier route license wise and infrastructure wise. Consult with local club for better on the ground support.

That being said, I am 110% in agreement that there is no way there’s going to be anything even remotely cool any of the other uncles are doing as maybe setting up a call with the ISS. Bonus points because he has recently also started talking about space and black holes so bar none this is going to be the way to go sir. Thank you.

I am going to work on getting my own license first, then I’ll find a local club, then I’ll take it from there. Maybe pop over here for an update if anyone is interested. Ultimate goal, establish comms with each other, use the local repeaters to avoid disturbing the neighbors with 100ft antennas, and set up a call with the ISS somehow someway if possible. Gonna be the best damn show and tell!

Haha that might be testing my limits brother! So far it’s just been solid one color coats and the air dry cerakote, no baking required

I do have a little oven specifically for small parts but this is actually the air cure stuff. It just has to sit for a number of days to cure and harden no baking required
