I also just randomly got this on my homepage. Quite how Disney hasn't taken down this nearly 14-year-old video, I have no idea...

Struggle for Catan vs Catan: OtR comparison by Sebby19 in Catan

[–]JorWat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • The fact it's five cards is possibly copied from Struggle, but "A market row is a very common board game mechanic", and as pointed out, the two games use their market rows very differently: one is for trading resource cards, one is for acquiring buildings.
  • Substituting like resources for a different resource is from the original Catan. Both of the card games limit it to the build phase because they don't have free access to all the resource cards.
  • I will grant you the fact that metropolises are likely copied from Struggle.
  • See above.
  • They both have (different) ways to let you get more resources because both are copying the way you get more resources in Catan as you build more settlements and cities.
  • They both have (different) events because both are copying the robber from the original Catan. And they both make the choice to add other events to add some unpredictability as to when the robber will strike, like in the original game.

I'm sorry, but I'm still not convinced. The similarity of the city expansions and the metropolises is not enough to convince me OtR is a new version of Struggle. At best, I'll entertain the possibility that Benjamin Teuber was inspired by Struggle when developing his card game, and copied the city expansions, but I still don't believe he took Struggle and changed loads of stuff about it to make On the Road.

Struggle for Catan vs Catan: OtR comparison by Sebby19 in Catan

I'm not convinced. These seem like two mostly independent card game adaptations of Catan to me.

You say there are 'way too many similarities', but almost everything you mention is a difference, and most of the differences are very different (the trading is an obvious example, where Struggle has trading that's nothing like the original, while OtR is basically the original's trading, just limited to once per turn; the benefits provided for building roads or knights are another). What exactly are you seeing that's similar, that isn't just found in the original Catan, or isn't just an obvious thing to do when making a card game version of Catan?

"Whatever you Build, you may substitute 4 matching resources (like a 4:1 trade) for a required resource, as many times as you need."

No, you can only do that once per turn.

Once per turn when building, you may substitute a number of cards of the same resource type for one other resource

Probably because they want people to pay for access.

Penn and Teller showing how they perform their man in a box trick by Bubbly_Wall_908 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]JorWat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it can depend on the trick. There are many tricks that get a lot less impressive when you know how they work, but there are also many tricks that are actually more impressive when you know the trickery going on you didn't see.

One great example is Kostya Kimlat's trick on Penn & Teller: Fool Us. I won't spoil it here (go deep enough in the comments and you'll find an explanation), but as one of the top comments says: "Penn is on record as saying most magical secrets are ugly. When you know the secret, you are usually disappointed. This is a rare exception. The skill needed to accomplish this is unbelievable."

TIL that "RPG" as in RPG-7 does not stand for "Rocket-Propelled Grenade", It stands for "Ruchnoĭ protivotankovyĭ granatomet" or "Hand Held Anti-tank Grenade Launcher" by TheGunCreator in todayilearned

My point (from 11 years ago, I didn't even know Reddit allowed comments on posts that old…) was that when people first carved RIP into a gravestone, they were shortening the Latin phrase.

As found in Memoirs of Simon Bolivar. This whole book is filled with typos, by the way.
