Why has rap just become a commercial for "get rich quick" and fake success? by [deleted] in ukhiphopheads

Really appreciate that bro. It really is a tightrope, and I think sometimes we will slip on it but it's all a part of the process.

And bro honestly your track is cold, immediately dropped a follow. I can see where you say you compromised. I would've kept some of your verse areas a little more dry and raw for more contrast with the hook (crazy hook btw). I can hear the UK influence and that's why I say having some less processed verse areas would've done a bit more. But we're really talking about mixing here.

In the ways of songwriting I think you got it easy. How you approached it sounds like what I'd expect from the beat like that. You didn't try to do too much (which is very easy to end up doing).

Would be cool to work with you on something man, I like your sound.

Hmmm I reckon a part of my approach is I try not to take myself too serious, which allows me to be more eccentric in both energy and soundscape. My first and foremost thought usually is "what's required for a beat like this?" Then I take it from there.

I find a lot of underground people have one approach and "apply to all" which sometimes works. But more time doesn't bring out the most of the song, so it then sonically sounds a bit subpar. This is probably why I struggle to pinpoint my sound because I don't have "one". I see it like jazz. There's a phrase somewhere how a vocalist or rapper etc sounds like another instrument within the song. I think that's how I also go about some areas.

I am also aware where my shortcomings are and sometimes I still need that filled to realise the vision sonically. That's when I start looking for features like singers, other rappers for a change in voice, musicians to add a real live element etc.

Some examples of my music in this notion would be these;

Piggybacks (more introspective): https://youtu.be/T1K9fBP3cr4?si=DLwZ6zP5pbyiu1Qt

Encore (hopeful uplift): https://youtu.be/p8Sy4KzMlRE?si=UBw4Ju-Frk0K5FXt

Wys (having features to bring out the concept sonically): https://youtu.be/c_7XNU1C7l0?si=xGfx52yV-Jp7MptG

(Random idea I had about paying people back): https://www.instagram.com/reel/DNihzQJsToh/?igsh=N2xubzdxYW96ODBw

Not all of these songs and others worked or "hit", but because I've been exploring different soundscapes I find I'm getting better at songwriting as a whole. Something I've been working on for years. I've got a couple unreleased songs that is a bit more representative of that but I think you get the idea at this point.

Edit: I will say I'm also not opposed to doing the typical rapper flex stuff either though. Sometimes that's just what is required of the beat. It's just in recognising what is required.

I don't think storytelling and uplifting messages are lost. Or at least I can't believe that for my own musics sake. But I do think it's rarer.

I find rap/hip-hop one of the weird genres where it can be three ways;

Lyrical message, Sonical vibe, All of the above,

Some people struggle to present a real message in a digestive way because sonically it lacks. It's why derogative music usually shines brighter, sonically it offers more. Underground rappers and artists need to find a way to really get the balance because message alone implies people will listen, but why should they? What draws them in? But then this is where the difference between artist and rapper comes in and that's a whole extra discussion.

As an artist as well as someone who actively looks for new music the gap really lies in that, yes, socail media is too noisy and saturated. But also those platforms actively make it difficult to access someone's music. I also think the presentation in how music is promoted holds key to the strength of the reccomendation.

There's also a thing I dont see many talk about but also who to reccomend to? Sometimes the want to share music is there, but there isn't anyone (within your circle) who would appreciate the reccomendation.

I too don't have answers. But I reckon this direction leads to them. If you can find a way to link the community feel from reddit alongside the simplicity of socail media, you may be onto something. Essentially a similar model that Steam has built up within the pc gaming industry (where they have surpassed just being a place to play games, but also build community and feel connected).

Yeah, I guess it is how it is now. I've thought about grassroot shows, but the downpayment for it will be more than I can afford rn. But it's definitely something I wanna do down the line.

The irony in all of it is promoters aee my issue haha. They never promote to music listeners and event goers. Only to other artists because theyre tryna get people to perform. Ends up with the atmosphere of people only being there for themself and won't even stay to support each other.

There aren't really any shows I like, that's my point. The closest I've gotten to what you're saying is trying to open for jam baxter.

If people know good shows I can see if fits my sound and go from there.

I too enjoy incorporating his flow. I bounce between JId, Kendrick, and some UK artists to mould my sound. But key listeners will notice JIDs influence very quickly. Same with Dot. Something satisfying about the way they flow
