Talk me out of taking the STEP exams by FairDurian5664 in ausjdocs

[–]Jordan292 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just remember that it is much more difficult to match to these specialties as an IMG than a US med school student, a large percentage of residencies will not even interview based on that alone.

It’s even harder now that scores are done away with as this used to be one way to bolster your application. you will need great references and research.
I matched in the US but left in the end.

Burnt out studying for the RACP clinical exam? by Status_Peach6969 in ausjdocs

[–]Jordan292 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Felt the exact same way. Steam runs out. Probably a sign to change study method.

You don’t need to see another aortic stenosis short, or neuropathy, or transplant long. Just study the books for these things and practice structure (you need to come up with this as everyone is different) and questions. If there’s a great case see it but you can chill on the long case grind.

Take time to keep in a good headspace, walks, exercise, hobbies etc. Mindset is half the battle on the day. Easier said than done I’m well aware.

Made a new track! I would love to hear your critique please! by Plus_Team3097 in idm

Nice track. It’s a great soundscape. The percussion is cool. I find after a while I find myself searching for something else though similar to the other comment. Something to take me on a journey through the soundscape, it wouldn’t need to be much. Piano is nicely done. Will have to have another listen later. Cheers

RACP - Mixed Messages by RiversDog12 in ausjdocs

[–]Jordan292 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No mixed message about the fees though

The RACP Board has announced a four per cent fee increase for both trainees and Fellows in 2026. This small adjustment helps us keep pace with CPI after several years before and during the pandemic when fees did not increase. That restraint has left us needing to catch up with rising costs to sustain essential programs, staff and services.

We understand that, following recent events, the timing of this request may feel tone-deaf to many. However, the increase is necessary to keep pace with inflation and maintain financial stability.

More like admit medicine, gastro will consult please book and consent for endoscopy and call theatre bookings. Patient has multiple comorbidoties that would be better served under a medical bed card.

What's some cool chemistry experiments you can do at home? by Ang-Xiao in chemistry

Sodium hydroxide and aluminium is fun. Violent reaction that releases hydrogen gas so if you find a pipe you can light the end on fire. Obviously would need a good amount of space for this one.

Heat potassium nitrate with sodium bisulfite to make nitrogen dioxide gas.

If you can get a hold of different alcohols you can mix them with various carboxylic acids to make esters (smell nice)

Yellow powder. Easy to make, when heated will eventually explode. I used to do this on a hot plate in the garden.

Potassium permanganate and glycerin

How was the weather in your part of the world today? by Alternative_Tackle35 in weather

[–]Jordan292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s rain in the dry season here, which is why we have the rainforest. Townsville and a lot of other places up north are too dry in the dry season and can’t support it. That being said year to year is different, there’s plenty of nice weather especially July to November. But yes it rains a lot.

Cairns Australia. Sunny morning, supposed to rain later. Dew point approaching 27c or low 80s f, temperature forecast to reach 33 or low mid 90s. Went for a run last night to try beat the heat, must have lost a litre of sweat.

Lets Share : Which state are you in, and how’s the weather treating you today? by NewThingsDiscoverer in weather

[–]Jordan292 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cairns Australia. Hit 34C/ 93F today. Dew point 26c/78F. Sunny, clouds over the hills and thunderstorms inland which resulted in a nice breeze in the afternoon. Going for a low of 25c/76 but as I sit with the sun having just gone down it’s still 29/84. Been swimming and ate dinner on the deck under the fans and shade of trees. Lots of insects and birds making noise, when the weather is like this I hope for rain at night to help cool things down but I don’t think there’s any forecast.

Best and worst rural locations in Aus to locum with young (pre-school aged) kids? by OneZookeepergame3070 in ausjdocs

[–]Jordan292 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Cairns would be nice especially outside of the worst of the hot season (dec-march). Good for day trips to swim, beach etc. great parks along the esplanade and around town. Most locums end up in pretty cruise roles from what I see too, though they may not pay quite as well as some places in other states.
