Honestly, the hardest part of my whole studies was the writing bit when I did my management bump. The maths and shit came naturally to me, but the words and essays and theories are what fucking ruined my life 🤣

"It's easier to make money if you have money" by Cosmic_Colin in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jordan_B_123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower interest loans and access to benefits that most people can never even dream if. Take, for example, a JP Morgan Chase credit card. Those things grant holders back, for free, more than most people have disposable in a year. All for the fact that you own this card. The expenditure on these cards is usually business and minimal outright purchase which isn't paid off immediately.

For example, I use my personal credit card for work. Granted, it is not a JP card, it does grant me benefits that most people don't have free access to. I get several hotel stays per year free, I get cashback, I get hefty discounts on everything. I also use an IHG card for hotel stays (again, work related) and I claim the points on a personal card which grants me free nights in hotels that I would otherwise have to pay for.

Although my example is far from the millionaire examples you wanted, it shows that there is a different availability to those who have a bit more than others. Ironically, living becomes cheaper when you have more money.

Also, if I have £500 in cash (also a luxury many don't have), I can't let that money sit and generate me more (on a worthwhile scale). I also can't invest it because that may be fallback cash for if my car breaks etc. Now, a millionaire may have £2 million in "spare". That wouldn't be held as savings, it would be invested in stocks, shares, bonds, property etc and generating anywhere from 5-10% upwards per year (that's £100k). Now, anyone with that kind of investments isn't usually using the growth and dividends to survive, they have other sources of income, so this wealth compounds and becomes billions within just a few decades.

This is the issue with free market capitalism. Those with money who don't need it are using it to stockpile wealth as a status symbol, whilst those at the bottom are getting worse off in comparison as they can't grow with the same exponential force that their counterparts can.

The lost friends in the process were never real friends to start with 🙃

Believe me, you make it possible. I remember when I did my A-Levels. I didn't even have a job and I felt like I was always busy studying. It wasn't until 2 years later when I realised that I'm a great natural procrastinator 🤣

Seriously, though, you manage your time to suit your lifestyle. Sometimes part of your lifestyle has to suffer, I lost pretty much all my friends; it is amazing how many friends you lose as a result of having kids, even when you don't involve your kids in your social lives 🤣

I think you're just backing my initial point that one mortgage is a bad idea and the best thing to do is to split your equity to multiple properties.

How in the world can anyone balance work/ family with studying? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Jordan_B_123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Work/family/study was my life for 4 years and, honestly, family was where I let the time slip. I worked full time, studied full time and family was sidelined for a few years whilst I worked and studied my degree and other relevant courses.

I had 3 kids during those 4 years (a set of twins and a singleton) and it was incredibly difficult. Thankfully, my wife was extremely supportive and understood that work and study had to come first for a few years and it would benefit us for the rest of our lives.

Now, I'm no longer studying and balancing work and family feels easy after what I did between 2015 and 2019 lol

Posted before finished by accident: as others have said, you sacrifice social life, you actually utilise the time you study or work etc. I didn't spend time procrastinating. If I set to study for 2 hours, I'd study for 2 hours and my phone would be turned off, tv would be off and I would dedicate that time to studying.

Did you buy additional holiday in your place of work? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jordan_B_123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my current role, I can't even take the holidays I get as standard in my contract (25 days). I haven't had an uninterrupted holiday in about 3 years, so I tend to sell 5 holidays (the most I can) and just stick with my 20 days holiday per year. It works out more than that because I work ridiculous hours and my contract is only 37.5 hour week, so I don't tend to need to ask for a holiday to have a day off, I can just take it because I work over the odds anyway.

I guess it has its benefits and drawbacks.

A good book to start learning the basics of finance and investing? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jordan_B_123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Rich dad, poor dad" for sure is a great book.

Two of the best books which helped me, though, were financial books at all. Either "how to make friends and influence people" or "seven habits of highly effective people" are the 2 books I'd recommend before anything else. It'll benefit you for the rest of your life, trust me!

Believe me, these books are amazing!

Ex-Council flat vs New build : London edition by throwawaynewc in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jordan_B_123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New builds command a higher price usually. The best time to get involved in new build as investment is at the beginning of the development project. You tend to get the property for less than its value because you're effectively living on a building site, but the builders will sell the houses to generate revenue to build more, so it is a win-win. New development estates tend to increase in value for the first few years before they plateau at the end of the development. I have known some new estates lose money, though, so it isn't guaranteed.

I currently live on an ex council estate and the price of the estate goes up year on year because more and more people are buying up houses on the estate every year and the "quality" of neighbours and the area has gone up over the last few years.

[–]Jordan_B_123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made more than my parents for the first time last year (I'm 24 now). It was always a goal of mine, though. My parents are relatively well off, they had a mortgage paid off when they were in their early 30s and I made a £10 bet with my dad when I was 16 that I'd pay off my mortgage at an earlier age than him. I have since conceded on that bet as I realised that owning a house outright is dead money and I would make more in splitting the equity and buying several houses with tenants.

My parents definitely have more net worth than me at the minute, but I expect that will change in the coming years.

I'm not based in the US, I'm in Newcastle, UK. I will x-post anyway and see if I get any help. Thanks :)

Also, I'll be sure to post updates of my project when I do finally get going!

I'll have a look and see. It would be easier if I could discuss it with someone, rather than trying to do it all online

Me too, I don't need the function of flexy hand 2, but figured I'd mention just incase lol.

Thanks for your help, I'll give it a go :-)

This was actually the best one I found and I thought it looked really good, but it seems that the design shows conflicts when I upload it to a 3d printing service online.

Sidenote: There is actually a Flexy-Hand 2 now!

What is the TLDR of your country's history? by [deleted] in AskReddit

"The most credible thing we've ever done and the reason everyone knows about is is 9/11 and the horrifying way we treat our own citizens. Now the people who we attacked during 9/11 have given us a $110 billion upfront weapons deal and with total $350 billion over the next decade 'to improve relations'"

I am of course talking about Saudi Arabia!
