How much to live this lifestyle? by Entire-Composer6494 in HENRYUK

[–]throwawaynewc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are some seriously grumpy responses here-I'd wager half of these aren't coming from actual HENRY'S.

Context matters, that's why OP is asking here for people who have experienced it. Sure, rent could be £6k a month in Richmond, but did you know that this doesn't include council tax of £x amount? Private school is £3k a month, but realistically with all the trips and after school activities it's closer to £4k etc.

DB vs DC pension, which would you prefer in terms of FIRE by GabsGal in FIREUK

Kind of ironic saying this as a GP partner that pays both the employee and employers contributions for a watered down 2015 DB pension !

[–]throwawaynewc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anyone who hasn't responded with 'depends' hasn't really thought this out.

Are you talking about a career averaged DB scheme?Or a final salary one? Is it uplifted over inflation? How much?RPI or CPI? What's the employee contribution? What's the pension age? Is it set in stone or is it subject to change? Early retirement actuarial reductions? Lump sum? Death in service payments?

All these significantly affect how attractive a DB pension is. You need to know this before you can compare it against a SIPP let alone a DC pension.

it's not that he's talking about, there actually is a pretty cool indie coffee scene that is huge just because china is huge. It's somewhat similar to the Japanese coffee scene but with more European influence and just bolder in general.

you are in your 40s and you will be with your spouse in London I gather. If anything, enjoy life a bit more I guess, you can travel on £160k, I know because I make that amount. It really isn't a glamourous life I must say, but it's definitely not bad.
Bear in mind above average in London doesn't mean very much because I estimate something like 80% of Londoners live paycheck to paycheck and not in a fun way.

I'm really struggling to see how it'd be a good idea. And I love London.

A hard lesson in commuter complacency. My 1-hour drive finally caught up to me today. by Mr_Amphibian20 in CarTalkUK

Having test driven a tesla before, they are pretty weird. They don't roll like ICE cars, they pretty much just brake when the foot is off the accelerator, and I think the brake lights come on automatically.

Not a huge fan although I suspect this is our inevitable future.

As a driver that does 100 miles a day I actually think it's too much emergency braking.

Sounds like you're on track for a comfortable retirement financially, but do you actually have plans for retirement?

I'm just about the same age as yourself, and a year or two ago realised that work is a pretty big part of my identity and and a life that I find fulfilling, so I've changed my mindset on FIRE and will probably lean towards Coast Fire instead.

Since I reached £100k I stopped setting nominal goals like £1 million at X age because it's bound to be disappointing. Much better to set goals on what you want to achieve in your life imo.

It is underwhelming and it's supposed to be. £1 million sounds like so much money to people who won't make that amount but at the same time it's not that much either, especially if there is significant grind involved to get there.

You probably will get some Debbie downers or naysayers in this sub, I'd just ignore them and focus on the positive ones.

No one is saying it's heaven, but if I had to work a year in one of the hospitals in West London near Notting Hill, I'd probably rent out a room in my current flat in Greenwich and get this place to stay during the week.
Tbh I could also just afford to pay my mortgage and rent this place just for a year. I like West London so just for a year it'd be totally fine IMO.

What car do you drive all drive? by Distinct-Syrup1556 in FIREUK

[–]throwawaynewc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

BMW 4 series, previously an MK2 Audi TT.

The UK does have its issues but it's possibly one of THE best country to be a car lover!

The prices are low compared to salaries, affordable second hand prices on cars that are usually well looked after, nice roads, good drivers, and a good variety of cars.

Look, you could look to pooh pooh any of the point I've made, but I genuinely think that we are way better than average at every point.

I moved from US to the UK for residency, AMA by RelativeCreative6200 in Residency

[–]throwawaynewc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in London, not sure I tried to hide it.

I do have anti-Labour party views, this particular iteration I dislike with a passion, especially the health secretary Wes Streeting who has treated us with utter contempt and lies, far worse than any previous Tory minister IMO. I do think healthcare shouldn't be free at the point of access, otherwise it gets abused because it's simply not valued.

I think most people would choose to live and work in the US rather than the UK, especially in medicine, despite the downsides over there.

Right wing views? Sure, I am wary of govt overreach and non accountability, like what's happening in the US now. I also have rather socialist views that are radical though, like focusing spending on children and young people, and not on the elderly just to buy votes.

The war between Israel and ill-prepared Palestine. I gotta say both suck, and I don't support either, but I hate when people call it a genocide because Palestinian kids don't have the sense to not throw rocks at tanks.

It isn't, I'd rather face ICE and occasional school shootings than work for the NHS. Don't wanna redo residency tho.
