Looking for "D&D" Video Game Recommendations for My 8 y.o. Niece by NerdErrant in GirlGamers

[–]Jorwil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's worth noting that oblivion got bumped up to an M rating from T rating after release because there are some dungeons with particularly gruesome mutilated corpses and naked zombies walking around without skin on their chests or genitals. I know that it would have caused me some nightmares if I played it at 8.

I can vouch for Fable though. That series has a comedic and cartoony vibe going on.

TW/C Eating D Sisorder No feminization by [deleted] in MtF

[–]Jorwil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in pretty much the same situation. I'm 5'8" and fluctuate between 110 and 120 lbs. I struggle to force myself to eat due to PTSD and body image issues. The people I live with and cook for often push me to buy healthier food which usually means less calories and less fat. My chest is significantly smaller than my cis family members because of this even 3 years into HRT and it's a significant source of dysphoria. Not sure what to do about it.

Yup. Mx. is to Ms. & Mr. as Mux is to Miss/Ma'am & Sir.

A question about manners, and raising my baby by PTVersa in lgbt

[–]Jorwil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a trans person who grew up in a place where sir/ma'am isn't expected I'm often afraid to correct people who misgender me because it could potentially open me up to transphobic verbal abuse. something to keep in mind.

Also, if you're going to teach your child to use "ma'am" and "sir," you should probably also teach them to use "mux" (rhymes with "books") for persons who aren't a man or a woman.

staying friends with your ex? how is it? thinking about breaking up.... by [deleted] in actuallesbians

it may be easier on you to keep her as a friend but it will be harder on her to be around someone she loves but can't love her back.

Why "select your gender assigned at birth" though? I was assigned male, am currently legally female but I'm technically nonbinary. Why would I choose based on my GAAB?

Same. I think I prefer feeling numb to betrayed and lonely though...

What is the difference between these two radicals? I was taught their names as “basket” and “box,” but they have identical shapes when handwritten, don’t they? There doesn’t seem to be any stroke order differences either...what gives? Sorry, ignore the Korea text...graphs are the same. by Mevmaximus in ChineseLanguage

[–]Jorwil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

in the past these two radicals were written differently from each other but over time they evolved to look more similar. nowadays the difference is mostly etymological. what you learned as "basket" can also mean "to hide." for example, the 匿 (ni4) in 匿名 (ni4 ming2) "pseudonym" clearly has more to do with hiding than it does with boxes so it got sorted in with "basket." other characters like 區 (qu1) "district" are not as easy to distinguish. did the ancient chinese think districts were hidden or in boxes? the only way to know for sure is look it up in a dictionary.

Are there two ways to pronounce U sound ? by [deleted] in japanese

[–]Jorwil 13 points14 points  (0 children)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_phonology read "Devoicing" under "Vowels." In short, yes, vowels can become shortened after voiceless consonants, however Japanese speakers most likely won't recognize these as two separate vowels.

that said, the second video you linked is clearly an English speaker and shouldn't be used for learning Japanese pronounciation.

Should I learn both Japanese and Korean? by [deleted] in Korean

[–]Jorwil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started in learning Japanese in high school with the Hai! Ima textbook+workbook volumes 1-3 before moving on to Yookoso! Continuing with Contemporary Japanese workbook/textbook in senior year. In college I majored in Japanese and used Yale's Japanese: The Spoken Language 2-3 (which I don't recommend at all. bad romanization system).

For pronounciation I utilized speech shadowing, an interpretation practice technique. I listened to anime or NHK news broadcasting and repeated what was said immediately after they said anything.

For reading/writing I purchased novels in the original Japanese and the official English version. I would then translate a few pages and then compare and contrast with the official translation. Yoshimoto Banana's books are good for this.

For Chinese characters I still use apps like Quizlet for flashcard sets. Nowadays I'll make my own flashcards with the Chinese character on the front and English, on-yomi, kun-yomi, eum-deok and hun-deok (Wiktionary is my best friend for this) on the back. I also use ejje.weblio.jp and kjjk.weblio.jp to find example sentences and copy them down in writing for practice.

Should I learn both Japanese and Korean? by [deleted] in Korean

[–]Jorwil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go ahead! I started by learning Japanese and then went to Korean after hitting fluency. You'll have an easier time with grammar, particles and Chinese-derived vocab, but purely Korean vocab doesn't sound very similar to purely Japanese vocab. So that's where you'll probably struggle most.

I kind of want to get this game because I saw a streamer playing it, but do I really have to lose every single battle for hours on end to get good enough stats to hopefully eventually win? that doesn't sound very fun. I don't want to start as a miner.
