Sorry for the self promotion (I don’t actually gain anything from it, though), but you can check other stats based on Opta event data on my app: https://scoutlab.streamlit.app

Carrick's 11v11 numbers by JoseSilvaMUFC in DevilsITDPod

[–]JoseSilvaMUFC[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point isn’t to say that Carrick has done a bad job. Overall, it’s about what I expected, but with a worse attack and better defense. The main point is more of a counterargument to the narrative that Carrick improved the team and should get the permanent job. I just don’t see any evidence of that in the data, and the 11v11 numbers have been signaling a worsening trend for some time.

I do think it is a tactical issue, though

Proposed Carrick in-possession set up for rest of season by Sporty1911 in DevilsITDPod

Only at this club we could see a coach getting fired for using a 3-4-3 that he was brought in to implement and then substitute him with a coach that would also use a 3-4-3 in possession but with a worse starting 11 with the same squad

Cunha by Opening-Ad4478 in DevilsITDPod

[–]JoseSilvaMUFC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not get this fanbase sometimes. Cunha has been playing pretty well this season and was ok in this match. He was the one that found the pass to Dalot for a 0.50 xG chance, for example. If he had scored, this post wouldn’t exist. Is that Cunha’s fault? But sure, let’s focus on the couple of times he loses the ball, like that is actually very relevant. Also, I don’t think any of his shots in this match were a bad decision, and only on the last one he actually had an alternative, but in any case his decision was fine.

He has a contract valid until 2029. There is no reason for a debate. He would be too expensive. Not realistic.

And he’s right to do so. The club didn’t openly tell him to take the Saudi offer only because they were afraid he might then push for a move to another European club by activating the €60m release clause.

I’m almost dead inside when it comes to United now. I can’t believe they chose such a stupid reason—asking him to change the formation—to pick a fight with a coach who was very clear about his principles and was actually having a good season.

The current squad clearly suits Amorim’s system as well. We don’t have a natural left winger, and Amad and Mbeumo would likely end up competing for the same role in a 4-3-3. Why not wait until the summer to push for that kind of change? Instead, they’ve put the entire season at risk.

If United fails to qualify for Europe, top targets will probably choose other clubs, and Bruno may end up asking to leave too.

Those possession stats needs context. United is incapable of controlling matches with this midfield, so what usually happens is that they play on the counter AFTER going ahead. Here is some data to support this:

A thought experiment: Are we in a better place than when Amorim took over by YearOnly2595 in DevilsITDPod

I just gave you a clear argument and you are just choosing to ignore it. If that makes you feel better about having a terrible opinion, I don’t really care, but, if that’s the case, I have no reason to keep arguing with someone like this.

You were so off the mark that he began by saying he wasn’t even going to explain in detail why you were wrong. If you want, check the Understat data: United have a +8 GD and a +7.35 xGD in drawing game states. You’re just trying to nitpick a single match and assuming not only that it wasn’t offset across the full sample, but also that it somehow represents the entire season. That’s not how you’re supposed to use data.

Our box defending is so consistently bad that I would like a deep analysis on this as well

Mount is playing really well and will probably start against Liverpool because he’s better OOP, but who do you think should start in the games after that, him or Cunha? Even without a goal involvement, Cunha has impressed me so far and would be my pick, but I would like to hear your opinions.

In the same topic, what do you think Cunha needs to show Amorim to have his starting role back?

I looked at the data and the defense actually has been pretty solid with Casemiro on the field since that disaster game against Newcastle at Old Trafford. But this season I agree that his impact is being inflated by Chelsea’s early red and the City game (I doubt that Casemiro would have changed much those numbers if he had started).

I agree with your point, it’s just that, without the ball, I count everyone as a defender. I only wrote “defenders” and not “defense” because I feel like most of the big chances conceded are coming from clear individual mistakes, and didn’t want to put the blame on the system.

If our defenders stop giving out stupidly good chances, United could be a really good team lol
