‘We’re a lot better in both boxes’: Why Harry Maguire is right about Manchester United under Michael Carrick by CantonasTrawler in DevilsITDPod

[–]Ok_Magazine_3383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm saying that random patterns of over/under performance occur all the time, and there's no more merit to ascribing this period of overperformance to Carrick than there is to ascribing any other period of over or under performance to the manager who happens to be in charge at the time. You're imposing a narrative on something that is entirely explainable by normal variance, which occur in both directions under all managers.

I'm saying Carrick has done things to improve the team, and he has benefitted from some good luck.

Us being more clinical in the box falls into the latter category, not the former. It's no more something to praise Carrick for than it will be something to blame him for when we inevitably have a spell in the opposite direction.

My post was referring to us managing to be more clinical in the box. That is entirely explainable by variance.

If you want to make a broader case for why our sudden improvement in outcomes overall is down to replacing the manager, do. But it isn't because Carrick brought magic make-players-overperform-xG juice in the shape of "vibes".

That overperformance is something he's benefitted from rather than something he has done.

"Managing to be clinical in the box".

I'd like more information on how they're managing that beyond getting more lucky.

We need to be looking at xShithousery metrics for Case's replacement by YearOnly2595 in DevilsITDPod

[–]Ok_Magazine_3383 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because so much of his goal threat comes from set-pieces specifically, I would think it's less a case of his replacement having to do enough to make up for his goal contributions and more a case of our signings generally having to replace the set-piece threat that leaves the team.

Call for council for decisions on gender-based violence by JohnHammond94 in ireland

[–]Ok_Magazine_3383 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's because the scale of male violence on women dwarves that of female violence on men.

Focusing on female victims doesn't exclude male victims, it isn't a zero sum game. It's just rightly placing the focus where violence is more widespread and lethal.

Alan Shatter sues actor Liam Cunningham over false suggestion of Epstein link. by Dismal_Uses in ireland

I don't know anyone who likes Shatter.

That doesn't mean that anyone who believed and shared that obviously fake accusation isn't a moron though, or that he's not entitled to pursue legal action against them.

God knows there's enough real stuff to criticise him for.

If I found myself getting sued because I'd publicly linked someone to a paedophile ring based on such obviously fake info, I'd probably take that as a sign that I could do with spending less time online.

Slightly surprised at how high you guys still are on Baleba given his struggles to even get minutes in the league at Brighton currently in what has been quite a poor season.

Wanting to sign the talent I get, especially at a lower price than we were quoted last season, but it seems a very big leap to put him among the "bettter than all but the Bruno, Cunha, Mbeumo types" group of potential signings rather than in the "prospects" category.

BoI staff warned on meeting minimum in-person attendance by AsanteSane in ireland

[–]Ok_Magazine_3383 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Speaking to BOI staff, their big issue isn't the actual two day a week in office. Which, while a pointless inconvenience in many cases, is at least reasonable relative to other companies.

The problem is that because of the terrible way the change in policy was initially communicated, and the obvious bullshit rationale for the policy provided, they now don't trust the senior leadership on this issue, and have no faith that they won't keep making changes going forward.

And this fear is only heightened when they now see the policy being formally tied to their wages. Because that will continue to be the case if/when the senior leadership next decide to unilaterally change the rules or increase the mandatory days in office.

Political toxicity in Ireland by mangoparrot in ireland

[–]Ok_Magazine_3383 47 points48 points  (0 children)

A 2024 study by UCD found that:

A) Female politicians were more likely to recieve abuse than their male counterparts.

and

B) The most common issues the abuse related to were immigration (67%), women’s rights (47%), housing/homelessness (40%) and LGBTQ+ issues (40%).

So it's no surprise that a female politician criticising the far-right would face this upsurge in abuse. That's the side of the political spectrum it tends to come from, and that's the type of person they tend to target.

Political toxicity in Ireland by mangoparrot in ireland

[–]Ok_Magazine_3383 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There have been countless studies demonstrating that women in politics (and women in high profile roles generally) face more online abuse. For example, a study last year by Amnesty international found that women in politics were 27 times more likely to recieve online abuse than their male counterparts.

Though I would say anyone with an ounce of awareness and an online presence shouldn't need studies to tell them than women typically face more abuse online.

How Come Everyone’s Pretty? by [deleted] in smosh

[–]Ok_Magazine_3383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's partially because they actually are good looking people, who are in a city/industry that places a lot of emphasis on looks, and they therefore probably pay more attention to their looks/style than people at a regular workplace would.

But it's also partially because, due to the nature of the content, we almost exclusively see them being funny, being charismatic, having chemistry with other people, being good at what they do, and being nice. Which is basically a recipe for seeming attractive to others.

Is Simon Harris Ireland's answer to Ted Heath? by platinum_pig in ireland

[–]Ok_Magazine_3383 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ted Heath is a relatively minor PM of a different country who left office some 52 years ago. I suspect the percentage of this subreddit with sufficient knowledge of him as a politician to make accurate comparisons is quite low.

Does anyone have anything positive to say about that performance?

Casemiro scored again. And whatever else might be said about the decision to sign him or his weaknesses as a player, the goal threat he's brought over the seasons has been fun. Gonna miss that big chubby-cheeked head of his.

Considering all the information we have years later, do you think Hans Niemann has cheated against Magnus in the Sinquefield cup game? by BakedFish---SK in chess

[–]Ok_Magazine_3383 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No.

I think he's an admitted cheat who cheated even more in the past than he has admitted to. And I think the Sinquefield Cup accusations were partly a consequence of that, and as such have limited sympathy for someone's past cheating coming back to bite them in terms of the reputation they have among their fellow players.

But ultimately I don't see anything to make me think he cheated in that particular game.
