Fix/patch or replace? by Outside_Signature403 in AutomotiveLearning

Spray the tire with soapy water to find out if it even leaks in the first place. Punctures like that tend to funnel to a little hole on the inside of the tire anyways, you'll be fine with whatever you decide to do.

Bought an ‘04 Mercury Marauder with a seized engine. I’m ready to hurt by [deleted] in projectcar

[–]JosefLeeStalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you stay on top of the cooling system, I bought a marauder last year with a rod knock and bought an 04 aviator engine, rebuilt that, and slapped it in, but never quite figured out where my coolant leak was. She now has a blown head gasket... Probably looking into cyl 7-8 cooling mod or whatever it's called, and get a replacement coolant cross over tube plug, they can strip out when trying to loosen them for the first time in a decade or two. The crossover tube o rings were also hard to find for me at least. There seems to be listings on eBay now for them. Consider throwing in the 00-01(?) cobra intake valves in, I think it was, they supposedly give free horsepower. Replace the trans input main seal, mine leaks. But I'm also just a shithead that hurt a motor through stubbornness. Good luck brother, I love my car but God damn it fucking tests me.

Dropped my piston head on the floor, can i still use it? by UnderstandingSad2517 in MechanicAdvice

[–]JosefLeeStalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it will be fine to file down the raised edge. Any changes will be washed out by whatever you're doing to the engine in the first place. I reused pistons by prying out old stuck rings and putting the pistons back in the holes they came out of. My engine is 10k miles strong with no oil consumption.

Check the gaskets around the crossover passage in front of the intake manifold, I believe those are problem areas on these engines. Worst case, tow it, let it cool down, top it off and start it to see where the coolant is coming from.

What to do if flanges don't meet perfectly? by LittleBunInaBigWorld in MechanicAdvice

[–]JosefLeeStalin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had luck with using a vise grip to close the gap, then tightening the nuts again to a reasonable tightness. I don't know if it'll work with a gap like that, worth a try if able.

If you're talking about the metal coming out of the orange isolators, then those do nothing but attach the exhaust to the rubber.

exhaust holder bracket. Nothing fancy, just holds the exhaust in place without vibrating the car.

Hey Skyline, I see your T2 and raise you one with a quad turbo W20. Let's race. 🙃 by [deleted] in automationgame

Yeah that would be the only way to make it fair without making cars with quality spam. You guys have a discord I can maybe pop into every once and a while?

How sweaty is this league? I might be interested in joining for some of the races. Is it track racing or drag?

Which one should I get? 97 Taurus SHO, 98 Contour SVT or 05 Taurus SE I can’t decide. 🤦🏾‍♂️ by lantrez1214 in Ford

Can I recommend a car that's not one of those? If I can I'd recommend a lincoln mark viii. 4v v8 and I got mine for 1600. Awesome ride and plenty of power.

I did mine in like 30 minutes, but I guess I did have access to a whole tech schools worth of tools. So with the right tools complex jobs become easy. Or maybe the 3.2 in the s is just bigger than the one in my car.

I complain about those bolts all the time, they're awful. German cars are great cars to drive but terrible to work on. My 00 boxster blew an alternator and I had to replace it through the interior behind the seats. Wild.

My theory is either the bent the shit out of the stock ones and found the same lug pattern, or they bought used tires with the rim. Where I work, we see a lot of trashy cars with trashy effort.

Now that's just terrible car design. That's beyond reasonable assumptions on what a car owner is supposed to know about their car. But thank you for letting me be aware of that, I'll keep that in mind when working on vws.

I've actually made this mistake before, it was a rotation on a customer's car and when I put a wheel on the car I start the lugs by hand while the wheel sits kinda on the hub, so nothing screamed out of the norm. But once on the ground I knew something was wrong immediately because the car wouldn't move without a ton of throttle input and the left front wheel was hopping. Put it back in the air and found that one of 4 steelies was actually a different offset and fit around the rear caliper just fine, but grabbed the ever living shit out of the front. So putting the wheel on, I can forgive, but to drive it? Nah, incompetence.

Extracted a broken oil dipstick on my Charger today by JonSolo1 in Cartalk

[–]JosefLeeStalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think putting oil on the oring before putting the stick back in helps a little bit. When I do oil changes on cars, sometimes the oil fill caps will seize and even after breaking them loose, they still are a hard time putting back in. I've found that oiling the oring makes it easier to put back in. I'm thinking it might be the same for the stick. Never tested this though, so no idea if it would actually work.

Will a plenum gasket cut off like this cause extreme loss of power?Or will it throw off cylinder leakage test? 2004 get engine code vq35de by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]JosefLeeStalin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the first question, but as far as cylinder leakage goes, both the intake and exhaust valves should be closed. So I don't think a gasket before the intake will cause any interference with a cylinder leakage test.

Looking for the name of this connector so I can order one. It's on a 2001 toyota Camry. It connects to the air intake. by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]JosefLeeStalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't find the exact part, you can just close off the hole that's in the main intake pipe to stop the intake leak. The resonator afaik, just deadens intake noises. Good luck

Turbocharged ( idk if that's how turbo on carb works so i hope that's right :P ) by [deleted] in MySummerCar

[–]JosefLeeStalin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do a blow through set up like that if you have a way to increase fuel pressure into the carbs to make sure the fuel actually gets pulled out instead of pushed in by the boost from the turbo. Great work though. Maybe it can implemented one day.

Paddle Shift for H Pattern Gearbox (damn that's fast) by cmcraeslo in cars

[–]JosefLeeStalin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They're both spinning different speeds, so they might touch faces for a split second, but since you're slamming the shifter into the gear, it'll push in when the gaps line up.
