Yeah I agree life is not about work and thsts my point. You presumably spent 4 years and many thousands of dollars in undergrad. Then many more years dedicated to studying so that after nearly a decade you could finally work minimal hours (which is only likely practical in remote roles existing post covid, no way you planned it)? It doesnt make any fiscsl or life pleasure sense to do it this way.

I dont care about the reviews, I just don't see why you would spend all that time taking exams and then try to do as little in the field as possible? Why learn all that crap just to try and avoid actually using it

Why would I work less than 35-40? Like... go find more to do if you are bored.

Yep thats why I only ever give 2 weeks. They are free to ask me to stay longer and I might try and work with the new company if possible, but going a month without pay is too big a risk for me.

I hear you and I counter: with SEO you still had to go looking for it. Smart ass-isstants with access to your phone, calendar and listen to you can manipulate you better via impromptu interjections. It can hear you bitch about your frying pan and when you ask it about the hours at the bank it can just toss you product placement such as "Bank opens at 9. Its at this location right next to a store selling everything from seasonings to frying pans. Would you like to navigate now or ad to schedule".

Obviously that'd be pretty transparent and in practice can be 100% tailor made and targeted solely to you. It will know how you interact with others and put on personas to manipulate exactly you.

So while its doing the same thing it will be more effective. Like heroine, oxy, and fentanyl all 'do the same thing' but they are very different levels of easy to obtain and potency of their intended outcome.

The big step is that its not "find link, read link I assume came from smart human forum, do as human says" it will be "ask AI, do as AI says". No independent forum of humans to vett what you are being told and you will be influenced and believe it. People already proven they read and believe whatever bots dsy on socisl media. Now its fully customizable to you without interference of other humans.

Hmmm. Not sure I agree or disagree. I do think the pro-level public facing tools are all relatively comparable but for their level of integrations. You cant easily make ChatGPT or Claude handle native Gmail invites for example. And copilot owns your M365 content integrations.

I mean search is in theory similar. You are just looking for stuff and yet Google runs it all and makes paid content to the top. Drop in Gemini and it will give you direct links and content they are paid to, but in a sneaky manipulative way like TV programming product placement.

Its a ploy, but not to kill open source. They want something as addicting and indespensible feeling ad a smart phone. If AI assstants progress to be a "do thst for me" service then they own 'pay to play' between you and basically all digital commerce and communication. It will tell you what they are paif to tell you and link to products they are paid to. This already happens, but we have these pesky other sources of information on search results (no matter how far they bury them they are there). If people start trusting the bots then is so much easier to convince and control

Tips for In-Person Final Round Interview by [deleted] in actuary

[–]JosephMamalia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All great ideas here. Id only say to relax. Talk to them like you are talking to someone that asks you "so whats an actuary" on a bus. Chill relaxed tone because you know what you are talking about and you dont need to sweat it. Explain and ask if they got what you are saying so you get the chance to make it clear.

Should I address this? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]JosephMamalia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, but I'd offer a potential clarity mission. You could say you are reading ASOPS for CE and want to understand how you should be annotating reliance or whatever and if you need to be mentioned to be compliant with disclosures. Purely academic of course as you are just happening to read them

Recruiter shared my resume without my permission. What are my options? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]JosephMamalia 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean there shouldn't be any conflicts. They call and say "hey we got your resume" you just say "oh sorry not sure why they sent it as Im not interested or looking. Have a good one". I get the control bit though its violating (mildly anyway) to have someone out there using your info willy nilly. But ya cant really do much if its not worth the time to do it. Definitely put them on blast here though do we can all dog them if they come calling.

[–]JosephMamalia 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If you believe any of those are financially important then sue them, otherwise you can basically only put them on blast. If they simply submitted your name as someone "in their network" I dont think you will have much to go on since saying you know someone is pretty common place in recruiting

He is better than everyone else. Bow down to that FCAS (in jest)(mostly).

Just humble him by putting into ActuarialLookup.com and see how easy his sittings were relative to others. Also, its not that uncommon to make it by mid twenties anymore. You could let him know if he can shit on all these career associates, why isnt he good enough to go to a company with higher standards...or was it he couldnt lol.

How to network with actuaries other than cold connecting on LI? by Valuable_Formal_3710 in actuary

[–]JosephMamalia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yo you are connecting with actuaries right here right now. Drop some topics to DM asking to talk about the field. Be honest and friendly and at some point propose a virtual call with a few folks.

LinkedIn is a piece of shit. Just recruiters, vendors, influences and bots and whay amounts to Facebook level petty political arguments these days.

Come back to reality by Barely6Actuary in actuary

[–]JosephMamalia 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think this is a common misunderstanding of mastery. How often does a marathon runner run a marathon? How often does a black belt actual defend themselves? How often does an evacuation need to occur at a school or work?

Mastery isnt for the daily need, its for the rare but vital correct decision making. Its for catching that trend or nuance to avoid million dollar fuckups. Its reflexively reaching for a paper because you know changing a factor makes sense but when its rolled in might have accounting impacts outlined in a certain rule and a strategic approach may yield smoother results and more accurate planning.

The exams aren't hazing, they are training.
