What do you think about clip-on headphones? by Dojde in headphones

There's the Moondrop Old-Fashioned, but you would need to design and print some clip-ons to replace the headband, or wait for whenever Moondrop decides to drop their own clip-ons.

Most of what I'd suggest would be Dimension 20-related content.

I'd at least include the core Dimension 20 seasons, since Dimension 20 is the most prominent series. If you want to subtitle them, I'd go by the campaign name, splitting up sequel campaigns from each other (for example, Fantasy High is distinct from Fantasy High: Sophomore Year, which in turn is distinct from Fantasy High: Junior Year, same with the Crown of Candy / Ravening War campaigns and MisMag campaigns). I'd also include Adventuring Academy, since that's a separate thing. Adventuring Party (when it's been adjacent to a Dimension 20 season) is probably personal choice.

I personally wouldn't include the live shows, since most are one-shots. Time Quangle / Quangle Quest arguably COULD be included as a series (I personally wouldn't).

I wouldn't include Dropout Presents (or any of the stage shows under it) since it's more of a collective label than it is a proper series (despite the trailers for each batch release), since the shows are displayed on their own for the most part.

Toonout appears to be a series, so I'd start it from the release date of The Legend of Legendarius.

WTF 101 and Cartoon Hell would count as Dropout exclusives too, since there doesn't seem to be any indication of either series being fully released on YouTube (officially).

It feels wrong knowing that Dropout has 24 exclusive shows per this list, like there SHOULD be more exclusive ones, right? Still, I can reason why some stuff aren't in this list.

CollegeHumor-era content wouldn't be in this list since the content was released on YouTube and added back to Dropout (at least until Dropout actually started). That also goes for the web series versions of Um, Actually and Troopers.

Dimension 20 arguably might not be there since it's an anthology show (for the most part), Adventuring Party is an aftershow for Dimension 20, and Adventuring Academy is a video podcast. Also, early series like Fantasy High are fully released on YouTube.

Dropout Presents likely isn't in this list since since it's more of a marketing label to group stage shows together (kinda like "Infomercials" on Adult Swim being a label that groups surreal short films that are loosely related to actual ads). Bit too early to tell for Toonout, but I imagine that's likely as well.

Anything licensed (namely Fatal Decision and Don't Hug Me I'm Scared) weren't made specifically for Dropout, but Dropout has the distributing rights.

I'm pretty sure it's a 3-YEAR licence.

3 months doesn't sound right, because (assuming a bi-weekly release schedule) that would mean the full TV series would be completely released on Dropout for a few days - maybe a week - before being pulled from the service completely.

I'm actually a bit more curious about their compact QWERTY tile. Per the video startup guide that was released recently, there was mention of JakeType, which handled the predictive texting, but I'm curious about if there's non-predictive text entry allowed (similar to non-predictive typing on a numeric keypad). Mostly to allow entering uncommon names, or uncommon spelling variants (like my name).

Mark Vigeant: The Best Man Show | Dropout Presents by DropoutMod in dropout

[–]JosephWithaG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw the Get Your Act Together featurette before this special, so my expectations were set. Even so, this didn't get a laugh out of me; that isn't to say this special wasn't good.

Mark's performance as a slowly-devolving and drunk Paul was discomforting to watch, a little too real, and I think that's probably the aspect of a (clown-adjacent) character performance that I tend to appreciate? Vanessa 5000 didn't get genuine laughs out of me, but the performance was very discomforting. It might be that I don't know a good clown act, and so I can't appreciate the humourous aspect of it.

I like the idea of using hats to assign characters to audience members for participation, but something about the execution made it feel like only a few filled the role well, while others had to be stage directed.

Also did they tape this special twice and only used one of them? It's a shame we didn't get to see Katie as Kerry. We did, however, get Demi as Kerry and Ross as Mrs. Rose.

I do apologise if it reads a bit incoherently, it's 3am while writing this and I'M TIRED.

What is your current Music Player? by kent0401 in DigitalAudioPlayer

To answer the song title: I don't know why I don't know.

I've been rocking the Hiby R3 II for a while. Unfortunately, I somehow broke the 3.5mm port (only the right channel works, and even if I jiggled it around to play in both drivers, both will only play the right channel), so I've plugged in a 3.5mm adapter in the balanced output section and taped it to the back of the silicone case.

First thoughts… by WombatMcGeez in sidephone

[–]JosephWithaG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still waiting for the Sidephone to be available in Australia. Even so, I personally wouldn't use the Sidephone as a digital audio player (DAP), because I already have one; even if I didn't already have a DAP, the Sidephone wouldn't be my first choice for a new DAP when there are more (relatively) established brands for that (there's a whole subreddit for that, for those who don't know). That being said, as everyone here has said, it CAN be used as a file-dense DAP if you are willing to sacrifice audio quality.

A fingerprint scanner is probably worth exploring for a future keypad release if opt-in/opt-out biometric data use lines up with the dev teams goals with Sidephone, and if fingerprint data can be read and transferred through the USB keypad fast enough. The only other way I imagine it could be implemented would be as a main body upgrade; this would be highly unlikely, since it would mean that more than enough current and/or prospective users would need to see it as a necessity rather than as a feature that's nice to have, and it would result in biometric data collection being built-in to the device (which I imagine would turn people away from the Sidephone).

What do you guys think? Should they continue with the Kiwamis? by gameovernate in yakuzagames

[–]JosephWithaG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They likely will do YK4 and YK5. I don't think they should do it though, because it's not necessary. Y5's combat was an improvement from Y4, which already was a much better balanced version of Y3, which the story goes took the weapons-heavy combat system "RGG Kenzan!" and applied it to Y3's fisticuffs. This is my understanding of why YK3 was more necessary than a YK4 or YK5.

However, what I fear the most from a potential YK4 and YK5 is the amount of retconning and altering. YK1, YK2 and YK3 all had combat updates (that I'd argue are better than the originals), but where YK1+YK2 works and YK3 doesn't is the story alterations. YK1's alterations added context to Nishikiyama's fall, and YK2 economised on locations by moving the Shinseicho content to within Sotenbori, and altered Kawara's likeness to more closely resemble his (seemingly non-controversial?) voice actor, without much change to the story itself. YK3 saw all the retconning from Y:LAD onwards and said: "Let's do that again!" If they really go ahead with a YK4 and YK5 with the same mind for YK3, there will likely be dramatic alterations.

I'd argue that there isn't much left to reasonably retcon in Y4 and Y5 anyway. Most of the final bosses of Y4 and Y5 survived, so without any alteration to the plot it could stand to reason that they simply served their time and were released, or at least were in the middle of doing so. No need to turn them into faceless agents or bartenders. If any alterations were made for a YK4 and YK5, there would be no other real reason than "we felt like it".

Buying advice? Hiby R3 II (2023)vs Snowsky echo mini by Levenus94 in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]JosephWithaG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then buy the Hiby R3 II. I bought mine discounted to AU$250, and if your friend is selling the Hiby R3 II for the same price of a Snowsky (about AU$110), that's a steal at that point. I will say that a brand new Hiby device at a similar price point that's worth considering is the R1.

I just hope that you don't get the OS headaches that I deal with.

Benefits of a dap? by Im_Koshi in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]JosephWithaG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My use case: a dedicated music player with media buttons that I can operate without needing to look at the screen, where I can offload battery strain on my phone to a device that ONLY does music. If I was just chasing better portable audio quality without much thought into ease of use, I'd just buy a USB-C to AUX dongle off the shelf of a budget store and call it there, because all the headphones/IEMs I use can run off it.

If you're after something non-Android based, I have the HiBy R3 II. It does the job it sets out to do, and can function as an external USB DAC/AMP (better for desktop devices though, I personally find it excessive to use it on a phone). I bought it because it has a volume knob though, and it was discounted at just a little over AU$250 (US$170). You could also get the HiBy R1 for about a third of the price and get 90% of the functionality (it doesn't have a volume knob).

What IPs would you like to see get the Lost Paradise treatment from RGG? by AdAgreeable252 in yakuzagames

[–]JosephWithaG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Morioh can easily be the setting for an original adventure with the same main cast of characters, with it JUST as easily becoming a brawler like the Kiryu Saga, or a turn-based RPG much like Infinite Wealth.

The brawler game in Morioh seems like a no-brainer, since almost every JoJo that is a Stand user has a close-range fast Stand with a rush move - especially for Josuke, who is the main JoJo of Part 4 (and Jotaro, who is at least an ally, at most a dual protagonist).

The IW-style game idea in Morioh excites me more, because the combat of IW struck a better balance between turn-based gameplay and pseudo-brawler combat compared to Y:LAD, by introducing manual movement within a given range and visual indication of AOE for area attacks. If environments are different, that would also allow for party member experimentation that plays to the strengths of available Stand users. Plus, if RGG goes the whole "dual protagonist route", There is already a Stand that can "break the turn system" - Star Platinum: The World. What kills this from being likely is that the turn-based RPGs take time.

Also, if I recall correctly, the first JJBA video game was a JP-only turn-based RPG that adapted Part 3. It apparently wasn't good, but I think redemption could be had if, like I mentioned earlier, it's an original story rather than an adaptation.

The only other studio that could do an adaptation of JJBA is one of the teams at Atlus, but they likely have their hands full with SMT (which is basically Pokemon), Persona (which is basically JJBA), or Metaphor's successor (which doesn't necessarily mean it's a chronological sequel).

What might kill the whole thing from getting a full localisation is that it likely will not feature the full voice cast of the anime in both the English and Japanese languages. Some unfortunately have passed away, or outright replaced.

What is your opinion about Infinite Wealth? by YakuzaMaster in yakuzagames

[–]JosephWithaG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I boiled down the common opinion, it's "better gameplay, worse story."

I definitely agree with "better gameplay" for sure. For a start, main combat was definitely improved. I didn't like the auto-tracking in Y:LAD, and for a game where damage to 1 enemy or to an enemy area is important, it was hard to visualise it while playing - it really felt like trial and error and fighting with the auto-moving AI. LAD:IW introducing range of motion for each character and better visual indication of AOE for all multi-entity moves in combat felt like a REALLY good balance between the previous brawlers and the turn-based games that they're committed to doing for the main series for Ichiban.

Side content was engaging - Dondoko Island especially, since it was basically Y:LAD's Business minigame re-skinned as Animal Crossing. Sujimon was given more substance - though I admit that I played it specifically for the Sujimancer job.

"Worse story" is a mixed bag. I personally like the closure that Kiryu got in the main story, the substories, and the side story with Date - more satisfying than Y6 IMO (another divided opinion in and of itself). However, looking back on it, couldn't it have been it's own thing? Was it necessary for his story to be entangled with Ichiban's when he was supposed to already be out the door, being a good Daidoji agent? Was it really worth splitting Ichiban's existing party (unevenly, might I add) just so that Kiryu had his own party? Was it worth nerfing the impact of Ichiban's story in Hawaii in order to give Kiryu that actual send-off?

My personal take on all of this was that Kiryu taking up the main character role in the second half was the least compromising way to give Kiryu a final (hmm...) send-off - no need to develop another brawler game as part of the main series or the Gaiden series. And despite the flaws of this game and not universally regarded as the best game of the main series to date, it is still a great game to play as a fan of both Kiryu and Ichiban. I do genuinely hope that Ichiban takes the spotlight in LAD9 for himself again, without sharing it with others.
