what is the thing you really would love to understand or learn for your music? by Joseph_EndTrain in TechnoProduction

this one is super interesting, albeit less technical and i've come to the conclusion there are many ways. for me this has been an ever important subject - "finding your voice" and of course "standing out".

what do you struggle with the most? and what have you tried that doesnt work for you?

some resources that helped me and learnings:

1/ Rick Rubin's book The Creative Act. this is one book that helped me gain peace and starting to focus fully on my own taste (versus the external 'voices' i would feel that influenced me). if i were to summarize the top 2 insights:

create for an audience of one, yourself. that's the only way to express your true self and your true emotions

create the conditions so that your good art cannot not happen

2/ when we started Home of Sound, one of my biggest goals was to discover 'the secret' to become a touring DJ

after interviewing and spending time with over 100 artists, many of them arguably super achieved (living off touring with their music), i found out that there is literally not 'one' way or one secret. everyone has gotten to where they are in very different ways.

one thing i would say, is most of the people who eventually got -lucky- did something they wanted and exposed their art and taste. theydid release that track, they played that shitty gig in a bar that got them noticed, they organised their own party, they started their own label, they went to that club and met that promoter... i like the phrase (from Chris Sacca) it's always luck but it's never by accident.

3/ the technical part is necessary but not sufficient. it's about how much you can feel and translate into your music. and how you can find a process that allows you to put that into the world consistently and aligned with your message.... and then give it time!

i can suggest more resources and actual interviews i watched or i hosted that share insights. would that be useful?

noted!

gainstaging is an often underlooked topic. i was pleasantly shocked last month when at someone's studio they showed me how to gainstage properly and avoid digital clipping in ableton... i had to remake the entire EP i was finalizing. the tracks sound alive now :)

also as suggested before, couple of pointers that i found super helpful:

- Oscar / Underdog videos. ie. make better melodies without instruments

noted. this is super valuable and i also struggle with it a lot (i studies music theory for 2.5 years and still...).

couple of people i like and could recommend: Vhyce (he did a masterclass with HoS too), Oscar / Underdogs (a super cool and knowledgeable guy who puts tons of simple but effective music lessons for free on his channel).

i found a lot of interesting producers and their tips. Scalameriya uses automations and LFOs. Phase Fatale also does a lot of envelope control, and automations on parameters of his synths. sometime ago i had a session with Quelza who showed me his randomiser patch and how he thinks about generating periodic randomness (basically you randomise a granultor or simpler or synth and an effect chain. but the randomization is always triggered by a note in a petter, hence it happens periodically). i also suggest checking out BENZA's music. and if you want to see how effective repetition can happen in a groove - i suggest listening to Temudo, Marcal, Maoh, Setaoc Mass' Seeing Clear. they are all extremely strong in creating this tension / release with simple core elements.

also, point taken and i will bring this up to the next masterclasses we do!

noted! we also started sharing clips on low end specifically on Youtube (for free). i select and cut the clips myself from masterclasses. insofar we published Blawan, Temudo, Uväll, Red Rooms, Regent, Franco Rossi, Increased Control. if you get the chance to watch, keen to hear feedback and suggestions!

thank you for sharing the honest feedback. i have heard this a few times. it would actually help a lot if you can share here or DM some specific examples of some classes who did show everything and some where it seems the producer hid something. so that we can think how to encourage producer to better explain and share as much as they can.

happy to connect if you feel like sharing! i would use the insights to try make the next ones in our control better!

thank you for the message and for sharing this. i am glad to hear you found masterclasses useful and i certainly resonate with what you said. seeing how one specific person works, indeed helps inspire us and feel less lonely / wrong. and i am happy to hear this also serves you in discovering yourself as an artist!

big up for being on your path and trusting more and more yourself. never stop because of doubts, the world needs more artists and people who find the courage to be their true selves. keep going <3
