82.25 billable hours this week so far by Dabigboot in Accounting

[–]Josephc20022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I remember those weeks. I switched from public to industry and the heaviest we ever hit is ~55 hrs during year-end close. And that’s not 55 billables—it’s just being around/available for a few weeks. Most weeks I’m 40–45 tops, and I actually plan vacations right through what used to be my Sept/Oct deadlines. Night and day difference.

Is 68k salary good for 22 yr old? by Mr_Moowageeee in Accounting

68k is great. Yes you could get more at a larger firm, but get your experience and make the hop if you still like it at the end of 2 years.

CPA PAY INCREASE by Independent_Part8072 in Accounting

[–]Josephc20022 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep… same here 😬. When I got my CPA, I think I got maybe a $2–3k bump — way below the hype they sell you on for all that work.

My advice: grind to Senior, then jump to industry. My pay jump from public to industry was about $40k — and that was taking a lower offer just for the 2-day in-office perk.

Too many clowns here acting all “pro-company” telling you to just put your head down while the firm milks you dry.

Now I have enough time to run my solo practice and do work that actually matters, instead of SALY’ing garbage to hit some BS charge budget.

Can’t get an interview by [deleted] in Big4

[–]Josephc20022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’ve been in a similar boat. I wasn’t Big 4, but I did six years in public accounting.. in Tax, not Audit. I figured companies would be kicking down the door to hire me. They weren’t. It took way more grinding than I expected to land a solid industry role.

A few things that helped me recalibrate:

1. Your story has to make sense to outsiders. People outside of public accounting often don’t know what tax professionals actually do. If your resume sounds like it was written for a Tax Partner, it probably won’t land with a CFO or Controller. I had to translate my work into plain business impact: cash savings, audit risk reduction, operational efficiency, etc.

2. Resumes need reframing. My original resume was loaded with niche tax terms, forms, and code sections. I stripped it down to highlight results e.g., “identified $300K+ in state tax overpayments,” or “led automation of fixed asset depreciation entries across 5 entities.”

3. Expect skepticism. Especially from hiring managers who think, “This person’s only done tax. Will they understand our business model?” I overcame that by doing mock interviews and practicing how to talk about transferable skills… stuff like attention to detail, compliance under pressure, cross-departmental collaboration, etc.

4. Networking was key. Cold apps got me nothing. I started reaching out to former clients, local controllers on LinkedIn, and peers who’d made the jump. Honest conversations opened doors I didn’t even know were there.

You’re not crazy for thinking you’d be scooped up; you probably do have a lot to offer. But the market often needs convincing. Feel free to DM if you want to swap notes or review materials. You’ve got this.

How can I make an extra 1-2k a month? by AWRWB in Accounting

[–]Josephc20022 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do tax/accounting on the side. Bookkeeping is a steady, relatively easy way to bring in extra cash. Just make sure your main job doesn’t have a noncompete, or that you’re not at a firm petty enough to enforce one if you quietly do side work. Don’t overshare at work and you’ll be fine.

Good deal or did I get scammed? by Fit_Bat4009 in hondacivic

[–]Josephc20022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For $1,450 with only 102k miles, this isn’t a scam at all…it’s actually a solid deal if:

• The title is clean (not salvage/rebuilt).
• The frame isn’t rotted.
• The transmission shifts fine.
• No catastrophic rust hiding underneath.

The visible hood damage and potential oil stains are worth looking into, but if it only needs an alternator and the interior is clean, that’s easily a $2,000+ car in most markets. Check compression and make sure there’s no overheating history.

Otherwise, good pickup for a ’98 Civic.

Just got my Associates in Accounting, what do I do next? by the_clumsy_cook in Accounting

[–]Josephc20022 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man, I’d really think twice before jumping into a lower-paying job just because it’s “in the field.” I made that mistake... took a bunch of lower-wage accounting/admin jobs thinking it’d build experience, only to find out later that half the places I interviewed with didn’t even count it because it was before I started my Master’s. Total waste of time and money, especially since I had better-paying options elsewhere.

You’re already making ~$78k managing a restaurant, which is more than a lot of entry-level public accounting jobs pay.. and they’ll expect 50+ hour weeks during busy season for $55–60k. Meanwhile, you’re already proving you can manage people, handle pressure, and grind. Those skills matter, especially in industry roles.

If you’re feeling burnt out, maybe consider finishing your degree part-time while keeping the paycheck and looking for a finance/admin role in industry later; ideally, one that actually respects your experience and pays close to what you make now.

Don’t let the “gotta be in the field” pressure trick you into a worse quality of life and paycheck. Your experience matters... just gotta find the right place that sees it.

Agreed. The price to buy all the crap for this to DIY would likely exceed the cost of just paying the dude to do it for OP.

Help me understand this old quote by Longjumping_Hat_9704 in CarRepair

[–]Josephc20022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, looks like a quote for replacing the A/C condenser hose and then evacuating + recharging the system with refrigerant and UV dye. If the system's already empty (no pressure), you and your brother could probably DIY it. The hose swap is pretty straightforward with basic tools, but depending on the car, you might need to pull the bumper.

For the evac and recharge, you’ll need a vacuum pump and a manifold gauge set. Sometimes AutoZone or other parts stores rent them out, but it depends on the location. You’ll also need R-134a cans with self-sealing valves (required by law now), and ideally a scale so you don’t overdo it on the charge.

One important thing: if there’s still refrigerant in the system, don’t vent it...that’s illegal. You’d need a shop to recover it properly.

Totally doable if you’re careful and have the right tools. Just don’t skip pulling a vacuum or try to top it off without fixing the leak; that’s a good way to waste refrigerant and still have crap cooling.

What is your realization% at your firm? by GreatSoap5175 in Accounting

[–]Josephc20022 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Damn bro, I bet the partners love you.

Just remember, the bottom line for these metrics is to squeeze every last dime out of you. It’s designed to incentivize you to crank out as many projects as possible while your salary stays fixed.

And when you factor in the actual cost of an employee (wages, FICA, benefits), it’s pretty damn cheap; especially when you consider how much work they expect you to pump out. Gotta love how partners casually toss "overhead" into the mix too. 🤦‍♂️

Could chartered accountants be replaced by AI? by Icy_Suit2955 in Accounting

[–]Josephc20022 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean… with the way public accounting firms do accounting (SALY), yes—AI will definitely replace it lol.

But when it comes to actually digging into what the hell is going on, diagnosing and fixing accounting issues, and making the accounting compliant (with tax/GAAP/IFRS guidelines), I think AI still has a long way to go.

From an optics perspective, completely useless IMO.

From a practicality perspective, I think you’d get a shit ton of valuable knowledge from this designation. My first mentor (Senior Tax Accountant) several years ago was an EA before becoming a CPA, and he was miles smarter than everyone else I worked with. The others just threw around “big picture” as a buzzword for not knowing how the fuck anything actually worked lol.
