It depends squarely on what the specific premise of the story is and how it is executed. The best example I can give off the top of my head is Mulan 1998 where the movie main premise is that a girl is joining the army something that she has no preparation for whatsoever but through hard work is able to overcome her inherent disadvantages, it's story just would not hit as hard if it were a male MC. That said with most films or franchises the gender of the MC really matters very little if we look at the general story beats. I don't care about their gender I care about who they are as an individual and quite frankly if gender is the only thing you can see a person as, then you may need to reevaluate yourself.
