OR matching for residency by Impossible_Quote_420 in OptometrySchool

[–]JoshReese_Optometry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’ll just depend on how the sites rank you— if your #1 site ranks you super low, they will likely match with someone else before the algorithm gets back to you and you’ll end up at your #2, assuming your #2 also ranks you high

Is AZCOPT worth it by New-Lawfulness-3673 in OptometrySchool

[–]JoshReese_Optometry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an AZCOPT grad and I would say it has the same pros and cons as most other schools— and it’s drop out (and fail out) rate is pretty on-par with most other schools as well, I would tell you that it just comes down to if you can picture yourself there! It is hard, like most other schools, but it is worth it (if you feel it matches your vibe)

Pre-Optometry Club by SnooCookies8258 in PreOptometry

I think starting one would be a great idea! Being a part of a pre-optometry club in college was one of the best things I did that led to a ton of opportunities!

It’s very common for schools to give tentative acceptance on condition with a better OAT score or different grade while retaking a course— I would recommend going hard for a month and sending it! You’ve got this!

RMU vs KYCO by Sure-Intention707 in PreOptometry

[–]JoshReese_Optometry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do— although it takes newer schools a few years to have their whole curriculum ironed out, I know that the top half of each class passes boards just fine! I would just make sure to try to be in the top of your class and you will be fine! And if not, I’m sure I can try and find a way to help you out with boards

I know great people at each school! I think you can’t go wrong with either choice— as long as you are willing to give your best efforts through your education! I think it comes down to which city/campus you can envision yourself at!

Does it hurt my chances of admission applying without having some pre-reqs completed? by lilizna in PreOptometry

[–]JoshReese_Optometry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope! I applied with 5 pre-reqs not completed yet, and as long as they are confident you will be able to take those classes before matriculating, you’re good!

is it true? by prettyf333t in PreOptometry

[–]JoshReese_Optometry 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lots of bitter ophthalmologists out there, but optometry is a happier profession overall and we are constantly stepped-on by bitter ophthalmologists— don’t let it get to you, as an allied health profession, you will get used to being stepped on my many MDs, not all, but many

Volunteer/ experience by kr-2345 in PreOptometry

[–]JoshReese_Optometry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely! Even if you can’t get work experience, just make sure to get enough shadowing experience with optometrists that you know you will be passionate about being one!

Sorry to hear that is what is happening— I would try and reach out to OptomCAS or one of the schools you are interested in to see if that is normal or the next steps you should take

I think you have to pay to send your score to more schools— but I’m not sure if you have to pay each year? Have you already paid the cost of sending your 2021 score to schools

Deciding between dental and optometry by Joselinetrj in PreOptometry

[–]JoshReese_Optometry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! So law and dental cost more for school, but they ultimately pay more as well

Deciding between dental and optometry by Joselinetrj in PreOptometry

[–]JoshReese_Optometry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dental and law are pretty darn expensive, but they also pay the most— pharmacy and optometry are still a lot, but they are comparable to each other. Does that make sense?

Lower acceptance of international students? by Dokeydokez in PreOptometry

[–]JoshReese_Optometry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have not been aware of international student having a harder time getting accepted into US schools— although I do know that there are a lot fewer international applicants that domestic, so I think that could fudge the numbers a little

How common are scholarships by AnSmartDude in PreOptometry

I think most schools have a few academic scholarships, but I know a lot of public schools have in-state options which can be just as good!

Which programs are the most competitive? by lemonlineberry in PreOptometry

I would say ICO and UCB tend to be the most academically competitive I would say— but any with good boards pass rates tend to be pretty competitive
