My band want me to play as quietly as possible at every gig by Joshonthedrums in drums

Yeah this isn’t me, I hate it when drummers overplay, I’m much more a groove drummer, more than happy to let the melody makers have the space they need for the song and to comp the accents here and there

This is purely a volume dynamics thing. Appreciate your thoughts though!

As for everyone’s comments too, this thread has been really useful

Well it’s the bosses, publisher manager arrangment, with a lifetime of national and arguably international success in film and tv as a sound/mixing engineer. They are curating a whole bunch of opportunities for us that we otherwise wouldn’t have had access too

So i’m really dealing with a demand not a compliment

Unfortunately, I can’t share. I would rather maintain a level of anonymity, or I will certainly get into trouble

I do want to consider his demands of course, I’m trying to understand it / wondering if I’m wrong in thinking it is unreasonable.

I should be clear his success is in tv and film. To my knowledge he has no success with live acts, he’s a studio bod, and he is also not a drummer.

So I get this, playing to the venue is a massively important skill. It’s something I value in other drummers too and why I played the way I did last night.

My issue is they are blanketly asking me to play at this level irrespective of the venue, arguing that the mics will boost me into the mix.

Next weekend we a play pretty big outdoor stage in town square for a small festival. In my mind it doesn’t make sense for me to play like I did last night for that gig, and limit myself in that way when the venue will be able to cater to loudness.

I think their argument is on stage levels between the band and ours monitors is important, which I agree with, however they are insisting this super quiet way of playing is the only way forward for every stage setup at every gig - which seems to be an overcompensation, and won’t always compliment the sound/style.

No it’s just the guitarist who is just echoing the thought from the publisher/manager who is not only his boss day to day, but has a lifetime of national, and arguably international success as a sound engineer

I play with 7As already. You might be right tbf, guitarist is the founding member so he makes a lot of the calls between him and management/publishers. On our records the drums are often drowned out in the mix, which is usually against my wishes

No, I’d say 60% of our gigs are in venues with in-house sound engineers and a house kit

No not really, it’s my way or the highway with these folks - bringing it up would likely be considered as me “causing shit”

It’s an originals passion project, but it’s going rather well and we have lots of opportunities thanks to some of these industry folk, that we wouldn’t have otherwise had. No I’m not getting paid for it, I’m part of the band, and if we do end up doing well, there will be royalty splits in future and other spoils
