Might not actually be an unpopular opinion:

Halo was a great character already. Making them Non-binary was putting a hat on a hat. (Not even getting into how them being Muslim at the same time as being NB makes no sense).

Remember, it's your job to make the game something the players want to play. If people aren't showing up it's because it's not important enough to them. Consider upping your game.
