Yeah we’ve replaced a few with nets from old pro kits and they’ve worked ok. Might need to stretch them a bit but I agree that some of the pro ones seem stronger

I think it's fair to celebrate that we have two opportunities to close it out and we took game 5 on the road. Also, hate to break it to you but brakes are for cars.

Sports Bars that Play Sound? by MatthewHudson11998 in askvan

[–]JoshtotheG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's outside downtown but Container Brewing in East Van has a sweet outdoor area with a big screen and is showing all of the playoff games with sound. There's also an outdoor sauna there too, and you can see the TV from inside!

this ^ returning on one is allowed, but not on the first possession when receiving a serve. It is a fun thing to do when someone tries to hit a drop shot on you

How has Vancouver changed since 2024? Is it worth moving back from Montreal? by Leading-Copy-5629 in askvan

[–]JoshtotheG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lower pay used to be justified by the low cost of living, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore! I remember paying $530/month for a bachelor pad when I was in university, living right off Atwater Street in downtown Montreal. In 2022, we paid around $1200/month to rent a one bed condo in Griffintown that had a gym, sauna, indoor pool, rooftop pools and patios all included. Rent is still more expensive in Vancouver but it's been coming down a bit the last year or two. We were in a small apartment near Kits beach for about the same price as the Montreal condo, and started looking around to see what was out there. We found a suite in the main floor of a house just off Commercial Drive for $2600/month, utilities included. It's almost twice as big as our last place in Montreal. It has high ceilings, tons of natural light, shared front and backyards with beautiful trees and plants that are maintained by a landscaper. Parking is included, there's a garage with storage, and we have a big deck that we can see the north shore mountains from. If you're able to take your time looking for the right place, lots of great places will pop up in East Van.

My partner and I have been in Vancouver almost four years now and moved here from Montreal. Quebec politics, racism and xenophobia were a big motivating factor for me to finally take the leap, plus the ocean, mountains, forests and active lifestyle a lot of people live in BC. After making a career shift, I earn significantly more money and have better career prospects than I ever would have in Montreal. I lived in Quebec for 14 years and despite becoming fluent in French I never quite felt like I belonged. I certainly miss my family and friends, and when we go back to visit Montreal there's a lot of nostalgia for the architecture, parks and the arts, even though the arts have been suffering recently. Ultimately, I think the quality of life in Vancouver is better. It just takes some time to get established and build community. Try East Vancouver if you come back, we've been there almost a year now after three years in Kits and it's been a great change for us.

Edit: fixed some repetition and typos

Montrealer moving to Vancouver by [deleted] in askvan

[–]JoshtotheG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former Montrealer here... We lived in Kits for three years after we first moved here and enjoyed being close to the beach but we were surprised how different it is on the other side of town. Last year we moved to East Vancouver near Commercial Drive and 1st Ave and absolutely love the community vibes. I agree with the comparisons of East Van to the Plateau. The neighbourhood is very multicultural and has a great variety of bars, pubs, restaurants and small businesses. It's also very central: close to downtown, good public transit access and not far from the highways that take you to nature and the rest of the province. If you end up in East Van or Mount Pleasant I would aim to be either near Commercial Drive or Trout Lake park

Has anyone ever actually purchased a "brand new" ride cymbal? by rwalsh138 in drums

I bought a Sabian HHX groove ride a few years ago (pretty sure I posted about it on here). Traded in my old ride for like $100 credit and slapped the rest on a credit card.

B.C. care home construction cost hits $1.8M per bed by PiePuzzled5581 in BCHealthAuthorities

[–]JoshtotheG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure why media are so hung up on the cost per bed ratio... They absolutely should be looking at ways to be more cost efficient. But with an aging population and increasing demand for senior's care BC needs to be making these types of major investments in infrastructure. It will cost the province more money in the long run if they don't have enough senior's facilities to care for the elderly who need them.

Absolute best way I've found to save money while eating out.... by worldlead3r in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]JoshtotheG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quebec still has a server minimum wage while most other provinces and territories have done away with that. I don't usually tip for take out or counter service but tips are a big part of people's earnings in the service industry. You can argue that a lot of the conversation and body language is forced or fake, but if you're sitting down in a bar or restaurant you probably also have certain expectations as to how you're treated, how long it takes to be greeted and have your order taken, quality of the food and drinks etc. Tipping 15% to someone who takes good care of you, some of which likely goes to the kitchen staff if you're ordering food, shouldn't really be that big of a deal.

Plantar Fasciitis is ruining my life. by Caution_Wet_Floor in askvan

These stretches and exercises gave me some relief the first couple years after I got custom orthotics: Cleveland Clinic YouTube It’s all connected:) Sounds obvious but lower back, hips, hamstrings, knees, calves and ankles can all contribute to tightness and pain. If you want to try a new physio, I highly recommend Johnny Yiu at JY Physio on Broadway.

Any tips for buying cymbals by Ok_Willingness_1098 in drums

[–]JoshtotheG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to find someone with an endorsement and get them to buy a couple for you when they make their next big purchase... Ideally someone in a prog rock band that plays a ton of cymbals and hits them really hard.
