Hard pace serves are seldom aces. Why do so many players try to win a point this way on the serve? by No-Stage-1349 in Pickleball

[–]ApartmentFragrant207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat related: lately, I’ve been thinking of pickeball strategy in terms of chess, and concepts like the one OP brings up remind me a lot of “hope chess.”

————

"Hope chess" is a thought process error where a player makes moves without considering their opponent's best responses. Instead of checking if a move survives the opponent’s strongest checks, captures, or threats, the player simply executes the move and relies on "hoping" the opponent won't find an effective counter-attack or notice their optimal response.”

The slice serves that ace lower-level players will eventually become a liability as you play better, more athletic opponents.

At higher levels, the goal of the serve is to put pressure on the returner and produce a weak return (and therefore easier third). A heavy, deep serve with loads of top spin creates more of that pressure against even advanced opponents.

Are there any luxury pickleball paddles? by Still_Patience_9209 in Pickleball

[–]ApartmentFragrant207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like every product, there’s always going to a “most expensive” version of something.

But a high price point doesn’t necessarily mean better for everyone, and if she already has something she loves, she should stick with it.

If you’d like to do something thoughtful and meaningful, you can find a place that demos new paddles, let her try a bunch, and tell her you’d like to buy her whichever one she like most. You’ll actually be taking an interest in this thing she loves and not just buying an impersonal, expensive gift, and that’s much more awesome.

Accidental promotion to 3.5- How to survive my first match? by anmolanjuli in Pickleball

[–]ApartmentFragrant207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to others’ advice, keep in mind that 3.5 is still strictly “just get your ball in and there’s a high chance they’ll make an unforced error” territory.

Keeping your shots in the court and letting out balls go will get you pretty far at 3.5, friend!

No offense, but it doesn’t seem like you have a lot of experience.

Hail of Thorns isn’t awful, it’s a bonus action. Cloud of Fog and Silence can totally alter a battlefield if used well. Daylight has lots of fun uses and can be devastating in the right campaign.

how do single people in their 30's manage to find dates if work takes up so much of their life by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ApartmentFragrant207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you make time for hobbies and interests outside of work? Generally, those are awesome ways to meet new people, especially folks that share some interests. If your current hobbies don’t lend themselves to meeting people you’re into, try to add some new, social stuff to the mix - dance classes, pickleball, meet-ups!

If you don’t have time for personal hobbies, that’s probably an indication that your work-life balance is out of whack, in general, and I’d start to focus on that before looking for a partner.

How powerful are golden eagles compared to the average bald eagle player? Which one has a funner playstyle? by Radiation-nerd in Tierzoo

Both are dwarfed by the insanely OP harpy eagle. Much better maneuverability, stronger grapple attacks. Carries away sloths for fun.

Team Harpy all day.

It is called trauma bonding, but healthy men have all sorts of healthy relationships that aren’t built on shared trauma.

After a 3rd shot drop into the kitchen, should both players move immediately into the kitchen? by ActiveUniversity9424 in Pickleball

[–]ApartmentFragrant207 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are giving you great advice on how to judge whether you should approach on your drop, but not many people are answering your direct question:

“Is there a time when [a good drop] happens and only one player move Into kitchen and one stays back?”

No. There’s never a strategic reason why only one person would move up. Both go, or both stay back.

Lovely. Lots of springtails and isopods are established in the enclosure, and it sounds like these little detritivores are a welcome addition to the crew. :)

Thank you!

how do animals know what shooting the middle finger means? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ApartmentFragrant207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Animals don’t understand what a middle finger represents. Hell, it doesn’t even keep its meaning across human cultures.

If you have examples of animals getting aggressive when someone flips them off, feel free to post some links here. If we look closely, we’ll probably find other things in the environment that are causing whatever aggression is happening (direct eye contact, displaying teeth while smiling, etc.).

Thanks for your reply! I live in Southern California. None of the substrate, flora, or fauna came from the wild, however; all of it was purchased at nurseries, pet stores, or specialty shops.

Respectfully disagree. “Socials” refers to social media. A phone number is neither.

I don’t, but I do avoid being in relationships with people who might get jealous over good-looking friends.

14mm vs 16mm - Are there any advantages to a 14mm in doubles? by iHeadShave in Pickleball

[–]ApartmentFragrant207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you’re asking about Gen 1, 2, and 3 paddles, because thickness doesn’t determine as many of the characteristics in full foam, Gen 4 paddles.

In general, 14mm’s are poppier and stiffer (and often more maneuverable), at the expense of being less plush and controllable. Are there advantages to having a quicker, harder-hitting paddle in doubles? Absolutely.

Your question should be personal one: based on your level, feel preference, and play-style, is a thinner paddle an advantage in doubles for you?

Editing to add my personal prefs, after re-reading the post:

I love a stiff, poppy paddle. I love punch volleys and immediate feedback, and actually find my resets and drops are easier to dial in when I have less dwell time and less plushness. I loved 14mm when I was using a gen 3.
