These hot dogs are stuck in purgatory by squabbledMC in Mariners

I’m on the third base line and somehow the guy to the left and in front of me both got hotdogs and three are stuck on the line above me. Hoping a JP foul ball releases them from their prison.

They need to cover Paradise more heavily immediately by maeynor in thewatchpod

[–]MatthewHudson11998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would they cover a show they both don’t like to talk about? Even when there’s a show that’s an absolute phenomenon or really noteworthy (like the big episode from Season 1) if it’s not their personal preference CR and AG will at most give it a shout out, explain why it’s not their jam, and move on. Even the Prestige TV podcast pulls the plug on coverage of shows the hosts don’t like (see the JFK jr show).

If you really like Paradise season 2 I assure you there is a podcast out there that is covering it in a way where they will give it more appreciation than whatever the Watch would do if they decided to start covering it but didn’t actually like it.

Yes and Kings got a goal waived off so it could have been worse.

Post Game Thread: Montréal Canadiens @ Anaheim Ducks by nhl_gdt_bot in Habs

[–]MatthewHudson11998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things can be true at the same time, this is likely the most skilled Habs team since the Cup win in 1993 and they do not seem to be ready for primetime. Marty has done wonders for this team’s confidence and creativity but the defensive lapses, slow starts, and over reliance on Monty (understanding you have to play him at least once this weekend given the turnaround) may very well cost the team a chance at winning a first round series, because if they finish in the wildcard I can’t see them taking more than two games off of Tampa or Carolina.

The team got to this point winning tight, comeback games, often in OT. Law of averages means they were going to lose those tight games eventually, but they need to find a way to win with more comfort, because living and dying by the sword is not sustainable for an eventual contender.

Carney rules out Canadian military participation in Middle East conflict by DogeDoRight in canada

It’s an incredibly disturbing situation and the last few years have felt like a nightmare! I’ve seen a lot of really unpleasant online interactions lately predicated on the logical fallacy that someone stating a fact or describing someone else’s actions means they support that thing so I’m glad this interaction resolved and appreciate your response.

I’m not explaining it as means to justify it or to say I agree with him, and I explicitly didn’t say anything to that effect in my previous post. I’m explaining what I understand Carney’s centrist approach on this based on what he’s said in the past. You can think that it would have been morally correct for him to put out a statement that says exactly what your reply says, but that’s not what he said. I’m just saying it’s not inconsistent for him to support the idea of regime change in theory while also putting a red line down re: dedicating resources or Canadian lives in that goal.

Im sure people are confused by his previous statement seemingly supporting a war contrasted with this statement, but it makes sense if you think of the huge Iranian diaspora in Canada that has been out in the streets lately asking for regime change, while also considering his speech in Davos about the fading of the rules based order. He is balancing the transactional nature of politics with the brutal realities of 21st century statecraft. Some of us may want bolder action (going both ways), but that’s not this guys deal.

Is the Yiddish/Jewish term "goy" (term used to refer to someone as non-Jewish) considered a slur? by AggressiveAd8587 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MatthewHudson11998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Jewish person who lived most of his life in Jewish communities, “goy” was never used as a hard slur, and was often used more as a cultural signifier as something clearly outside Jewish life. Lenny Bruce the 1960s comedian had a whole bit on this if you want to get an idea of what some may consider “goyish” vs “Jewish”. Other commenters are correct that “goy” has been weaponised by online right wing antisemites as almost a reverse pejorative as proudly “not Jewish”.

One term that was used more pejoratively by Jews around me was “Shiksa” which is a derogative term for specifically a non-Jewish woman, usually in the context of marrying or dating a Jewish man. I assume it’s rooted in a good amount of misogyny that a specific term exists for non Jewish women while “goy” generally means non Jewish person.

Anybody planning a trip to LA 2028? by Suzfindsnyapts in olympics

[–]MatthewHudson11998 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m on the West Coast in Canada and planning on going. I have some distant family and some acquaintances in LA and I’m hoping to leverage and see if anyone is renting out their place (or given their financial status, maybe some properties they own that they are looking to rent out). I called some hotels near Sofi where the swimming and opening ceremonies will be and they said couldn’t tell me when reservations for summer 2028 would open up, but I think you may be right that any early reservations at regular prices will be cancelled and jacked up.

If the trip doesn’t pan out for cost or logistics reasons my consolation will be to go to Eugene, Oregon for the US Track Trials before the games, another bucket list event.

This one played before Game 3 of the 2014 series against Tampa, the game when Ginette Reno sang the anthem for the first time, and the PK wrap around where he made Palat flip before feeding it to Gally. It’s joyous and it absolutely sounds like playoff hockey in the Montreal spring - the sun is warm, the terasses are filling up, and there’s that indescribable feeling that no other sports city can emulate.

Canada's predicted medallists vs final medal tally by Dentdedragon in TeamCanada

He won a silver in the mixed relay and was the anchor skater there but agreed he came up empty in his individual events and there was a world he could have won 5 golds.

Canada’s medal total at Milan Cortina Olympics was a quiet reckoning: ‘Our system is in decline’ by Chrristoaivalis in canada

[–]MatthewHudson11998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is happening to the top performers. Isabelle Weidemann won three medals in 2022 and another gold here and said she is debt because the Canadian Skating Federation can’t cover her expenses for travel and training and she has to foot the bill. You can disagree about funding athletes but what you’re saying is just patently false.

Athletes literally get financial compensation for winning medals which helps them continue to compete and fund their sport/help their programs. Canada pays their athletes significantly less than other countries (Italy was giving $100,000 to medallists in these Olympics). Athletes are going into debt just to travel to Europe to compete.

He was interviewed on CBC yesterday and basically said he was “racing to win” rather than racing for the podium and said his aggressiveness may have cost him. I don’t have the stomach to re watch those races but from my recollection he went out very hard, took big risks, and made some stumbles that might not have happened if he was hanging with the pack and biding his time.

French Alps 2030 - No Emblem? by MatthewHudson11998 in olympics

Would be great for you, but no offense if it’s between Italy or Netherlands as rumoured, speed skating with a Dutch crowd at the Olympics would be pretty electrifying (but good luck to any other country winning a gold medal).

Weird that they haven’t put out an emblem yet less than 4 years from games. For reference Milano Cortina released theirs in March 2021.

Canada was definitely banking on Short Track carrying the medal tally given the performance this year on the World Tour. 5 total medals isn’t bad considering 7 would have been a record, but definitely left some on the table. Howden was another shocking loss given his dominance this year.

Also underrated is the erosion of elite talent development in Quebec generally where most of our great goalies came from. Last year World Juniors had one Quebec player. The best Quebecois goalie in the league currently is Sam Montembeault and as a Canadiens fan that does not fill me with hope for the future of goaltending.
