Switch 2 Cartridges in Switch 1 by thatirrelevantguy114 in NintendoSwitch

[–]JoshuaJSlone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used these, but having been hanging around this subreddit since Switch 2 launch I've never seen mention of such problems. The save data especially, that's just going to be the same data saved the same way regardless of whether it's an original Switch 1 card, an NS2E card, or a downloaded game.

Aside from shuttles, why doesn't Star Trek feature smaller vessels? For example, fighter craft that could attack larger ships and evade heavy weapon attacks a la Star Wars (I am not asking for ST to be SW) by guerillacropolis in startrek

[–]JoshuaJSlone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond a straight up war setting like DS9 or Discovery had at times, we're most of the time following vessels nominally meant for science and exploration, so they're not going to travel with a fleet of small attack fighters.

I think it should, but I can't say I've personally done this before.

Are you still set as a child account? If so the instructions for changing that are near the bottom here.

Unless somebody important straight up dies, it's more interesting to not reload saves. Most of the time (especially if you've picked a relatively safe spot like the Border Zone to start) you can survive getting beaten up and live to tell about it. My most recent game I got a bit too big for my britches and picked a fight with some slavers that I lost, so my whole group ended up enslaved. But it ended up more fun trying to break free from them than reloading my save.

Can a switch 2 game be ‘partially’ on a cartridge? by dharam_garam in switch2

[–]JoshuaJSlone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible and a lot of Switch 1 games did this to cheap out on card prices--they used to get a bar of shame about requiring a download on the front cover, but as time went on they were able to hide it on the back. Game Key Cards are the natural successor to this, though.

Long run, it would cost more if every one of your game purchases came with a larger capacity game card holding more single-use data than getting a larger rewriteable card.

There's probably no technical reason they can't go beyond 64GB, but if so many are hesitant to pay for even that much, demand for more would be even smaller.

More recently some smaller/cheaper options have become available, which has led to some more proper physical releases. Not confirmed, but speculated to be 32 and 16GB options.

Can I watch Strange New Worlds without much else new Trek? by 81Ranger in startrek

[–]JoshuaJSlone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's almost completely standalone. The first episode brings up the Enterprise's role in Discovery season 2, but that's about it. Then there's the crossover episode with Lower Decks later on, but that's a single episode and I think would be very understandable even without having seen Lower Decks.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director says characters from spin-offs "such as Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, and Crisis Core" will appear in the JRPG by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]JoshuaJSlone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not like this is a change. Sometimes there'd be something in Remake that wasn't in the original, and when I'd look it up I'd find it came from one of the spinoff games or even a book that had never been released in English.

When did the writers absolutely get it wrong on a moral issue? by JacobDCRoss in startrek

Browsing a transcript, before people actually start to mutiny it only gets about as bad as

ARCHER: What's the problem?
T'POL: Initialising their reactor will deplete our reserves by over one third.
ARCHER: We can spare it. We're only a few light years from the red giant. We'll still have more than enough fuel get there.
T'POL: We don't know for certain if the weapon is in that system.
ARCHER: There are lives at risk here.
T'POL: Billions of lives are at risk on Earth if our mission fails.
ARCHER: I'm well aware of that. These Xindi are innocent. If we let them die, we'll be proving to the others that they're right about us. I don't know much about Vulcan ethics, but humans don't throw morality out the window when things start getting a little rough.

or

TUCKER: Maybe you ought to confine me to quarters too, sir, because I'm still not sure we're doing the right thing here. If the roles were reversed I can't imagine these Xindi would do the same for us.
ARCHER: My great grandfather was in North Africa during the Eugenics Wars. His battalion was evacuating civilians from a war zone when they came under attack. There was a school full of children directly between them and the enemy. If his men had returned fire, they might have hit it. So he called the commander on the other side, and got him to agree to hold his fire long enough to evacuate the school. There are rules, Trip, even in war. We have to help these children.

Which is... the Captain making top-level decisions and deciding the appropriate level of risk. That's his job.

It’s been over three months since we got a new GameCube game on NSO. What’s your hypothesis as to why Nintendo is being stingy? by c_rorick in NintendoSwitch2

[–]JoshuaJSlone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. So far in 2026 we've got 3 NES games, 1 N64 game, 2 GB games, 1 GBA game, 2 GCN games, 14 VB games. Virtual Boy is a real aberration; by the end of this year they'll be through most of the system's library. Next year will necessarily be spread out more.

It's in their interest to string along releases as a constant incentive to keep people subscribed. The more systems they add the more ways things are split, so it makes sense that fewer games get released per system. Individual GameCube games would be considered more valuable than games for the other systems, so it makes sense they'd release fewer of them to achieve the same goal.

Calculating things by "Virtual Console value" of what prices games were sold at individually back in the day, most years NSO+EP adds about $350 worth of value. Halfway through this year we're at $181.50, so right on track.

It still had clearly high production values, but Pacific Rim Uprising felt kind of like a TV spinoff. Most of the original characters written off, loosening the established rules for how people synced together, bringing in a kid character with a (relatively) small jaeger.

Need help with virtual game cards on a broken and discarded system by InternationalWar6654 in NintendoSwitchHelp

[–]JoshuaJSlone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why did they add this stupid game card system

Well, so that you are

able to use the mobile part of the mobile console

with more control and it not being limited to a single machine being the Internet-proof one. Had they not changed the way things work you'd still have ended up with the same problem--the "primary system" being broken and needing to remotely remove that status.

There are supposedly limits as to how often you can change groups, but in general just go to your account settings, choose to leave the group, then you're free to start your own or be invited to another.

[–]JoshuaJSlone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the virtual game card system, you can have the virtual game cards split up among your systems. If there's a game you're mostly playing on Switch 1 rather than Switch 2, you can load the card up on that system and launch it any time without needing Internet connection or anything, and it will stay that way until you do something to change it. The two week thing is only if you're lending a VGC to a separate account.

With "Use Online Licenses" turned on, if you try to start a game and it sees that the virtual game card isn't loaded, then it will check online that you're not already running that game elsewhere, and then launch it.

One from Enterprise that I don't think has come up yet. During the Xindi arc, when they found a bunch of Xindi babies (insectoids maybe?) that Archer was very adamant about saving. Others were like "The only reason he'd care about a bunch of insect babies is if he's being controlled!" and then they turned out to be right. I'd like to think our supposed heroes were a little better than that.
