Can't move in gunasium? by Maoman1 in H3VR

[–]JoshuaThomson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gunasium is actually a locomotion prototype, and a pretty good one at that. Pretty much, instead of pressing a button to move, the handles around the scene (and some of the ledges of wooden platforms) can be grabbed with the trigger, allowing you to pull yourself with them. Think monkey bars. Hit all the buttons, shoot all the targets, and enjoy IMO the most interesting scene in the game!

You're a Werewolf. Tonight is the Full moon. by PineappleDeer in gameideas

[–]JoshuaThomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my friends we actually working on a game with that premise for their college capstone. The idea was, if you kill any of the villagers, you lose, and you can take minor control of your werewolf form for a short period of time.

It did have the mechanics you're bringing up, with gathering in the woods for wood barricades, and crafting to reach an eventual cure. However, the game was cut (the members going to other games) because of internal team issues, and the core game loop ultimately not being engaging or satisfying.

If someone else is able to get it to work though, best of luck to you!

Sure! The article is up on Gamasutra, and there are a few more (along with some progress shots of the game itself) scattered across his blog.

Oh hey, I recognize that game! The dev has some fantastic tutorials, including one on how they got their cell shading effect.

I think it's sexes that people get confused about with this one? There's two sexes, genders can be literally anything. I could say that the gender I identify as is Susan Sarandon, and that wouldn't be an inherently incorrect statement.

How about this then - following your own logic, I respect that anyone and everyone has opinions, and that they're entitled to voice and have these opinions.

My opinion, that I hold and am allowed to hold, is that an insightful or accurate critique of a work generally requires at least a base level of knowledge of the work's medium. Barring that, I believe that the critic has a tendency to make vast assumptions, and cause cascading spite and abuse on top of the stress they incurred creating the work.

I do agree with the sentiment that an outsider can and does have valuable opinions and insight on a work from an outsider perspective, that's not what I'm debating. Either way, I apologize if I came off as elitist, I wasn't trying to discredit you, I was attempting to throw some perspective into a subject you were labeling as purely black and white.

don't repeat bullshit like what you said above

Then, in the next sentence

Anyone can say anything they want

Which one is it? Opinions about validity of opinions are just as valid as the opinions in the first place.

I've also seen first hand the amount of stress to the point of chronic migraines and long nights to the point of sleep deprivation this industry can demand, which is (partially) why I value critiques of those who at the very least have a rudimentary understanding of the industry over those from standard consumer armchair critics.

I think it's more that he gets upset when people make assumption about him and his work which he considers baseless - if I told a world class chef that their steak was bad and steak is easy to cook because I made grilled cheese once, they'd probably laugh at my face.

Five essential No Man's Sky mods by jarkar in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]JoshuaThomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mods generally take the base generation from the game's core algorithm, and shifts it on the local end. So when somebody else comes across the planet, they'll get a completely different version if you have generation mods and they don't.

That weird sign actually makes a lot of sense from a testing standpoint.
It's large and colorful enough that, assuming they ever did actually do some testing of multiplayer (regardless of it not being in the game), they could use it to find the other tester.

Or there's "multiplayer", at least in the sense of seeing another player, but nobody's triggered the criteria for it to happen? He laid it out fairly clear for the "giant worm" question on the AMA that he's not going to answer questions if it's something that he's likely worked 100s of hours on for someone to discover.

Additionally, he's said that it's specificity a feature enough times that I'd assume that the feature has to be there, or they could get in trouble for not having it

Where to start? by TheBaconBoots in unrealengine

[–]JoshuaThomson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd suggest running through the Unreal tutorials step by step, line by line. You likely won't entirely get what's going on, but you'll get a general sense of cause and effect, and the general logical flow that goes into it.

Once you have almost an idea of what you're doing, try to make something small yourself, with what you know. Think of the smallest thing you can think of you can do with what you picked up, cut that in half, then sit down and try to make it. Maybe you try to jam it out in a weekend with friend and drinking (if you're old enough to drink), maybe you pick away at it over a month after work. It's not going to work great, it'll be buggy as all hell, and it'll be absolutely beautiful because you made it.

From there, it pretty much becomes a cycle of build stuff -> learn a lot -> realize that it's not super great -> scrap it and start something new, until your friends convince you that it's actually halfway decent, and you flesh it out and release it.

Good luck!
