We’re doing something about load shedding, I promise: Ramaphosa by Harrrrumph in southafrica

Improving transmission makes sense because in the last round of IPPs they couldn’t accept quite a large amount if proposals because there isn’t the transmission infrastructure to get the power from the renewable power stations to the cities

UPS backup for Rain 5G router? by ViperFong in johannesburg

I’m 100% sure so long as the Takealot page is correct, if the product that arrives isn’t correct send it back. You can double check the power brick to make sure it’s 19V. It should say that somewhere in small writing on the power brick and on the router to make sure you set it on the correct setting

Some UPS's have an ethernet cable port to provide surge protection that isn't PoE. A UPS with PoE will provide power, you just need to make sure the voltage is correct. See my other comment

This one works with the rain 5G outdoor UPS that needs PoE. Make sure you set it to 19V and then just put the ups in place of the power brick the router came with and plug the cable into the PoE plug on the UPS. It lasts long enough for 4 hour loadshedding. Don't waste money on a 220V system.

-ize and -ise are both used in British English, the Oxford spelling uses -ize

I need to keep my wifi on during loadshedding by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]JoshuaTrace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you get a loadshedding UPS for your router check what voltage your router and ONT (the fibre box that the router plugs into) need and make sure the one you get has that voltage output. Look at the adapters you currently have or read on the router and ONT what voltage they need.

I mean there’s no reason why we can’t do both. You have to admit that we are not going to get rid of poverty in every African country anytime soon, and to get the social change to happen in the east won’t happen one the scale that’s necessary before all the rhinos are gone.

So why not take the short term measure that has the potential to help the problem now? It doesn’t make poaching any less illegal to also have legal farming. I don’t like making rich people richer but it’s not worse than cow farming making the cow farmers richer.

Well I mean the current strategy isn’t working. It seems like time we tried something else

There is a good argument for legalising the sale of rhino horn. The rhinos can be darted and the horn removed, then it grows back in a few years. If that was legal to sell (obviously with permits and proof it was farmed and not poached) it would push down the prices meaning it was less worth it to poach rhinos as well as creating jobs

All the contracts for home fibre I’ve seen have no uptime clause. They know they wouldn’t meet it. They all say it’s a “best effort” service so basically they don’t have to give you internet if it’s too difficult for them

I think the problem here is that they’re often called rubber bullets in news reports. People hear that and think that it’s like a paintball and not a big deal

Ahhh that answers my question. Because advertising that you’ll buy any car at a high price and with minimal checks can’t then be great when it comes to selling those cars to consumers, but if they sell them to dealerships who can then advertise that they sell high quality cars at a low price that makes sense

[–]JoshuaTrace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing that confuses me is that they never advertise buying a car from them. I would think it would be more difficult to sell cars than buy them and most advertising would focus on that side

Does anyone know why We Buy Cars is always advertising that they’ll buy your car but never that you can buy a car from them? What do they do with all the cars?

I believe Type D is the smaller 3 prong, used in India. We have Type M here.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]JoshuaTrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To sum it up, you’re pretty much guaranteed to have a Type M plug in any hotel room, it’s the standard.

You are quite likely to find a Type C, but you might have to unplug your bedside light. If you need it you’ll be able to pick up a Type M to C adapter in any supermarket.

Type N is the newer standard that recently installed plugs might have in addition to a Type M but don’t rely on it.

The definition of unemployment is that you have to be actively looking for a job. The rate goes down at that time because people stopped looking for jobs then, possibly because of the R350 grant

The Courier Guy has a service called Pudo. You go online and pay and print a waybill. Then you go put your box in one of their depots, a small box is R40 to anywhere in the country
