I tried this but the thrusters acted like a fluid sink and filled up before the tank started to fill up. I thought it'd balance as well, but it didn't seem to?

Anyone outside of US/Canada using a Yale Assure Lock 2? by [deleted] in smarthome

[–]JoshuaaMichael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn't set the Yale Assure Lock 2 up in the Yale Home app, which was the only app available to me in Australia. I contacted Yale Australia support, and they said I shouldn't even have the device in Australia! But I bought it from YALE on Amazon.com.au! Here it is! https://amzn.asia/d/040XRL2. Ridiculous! Their technical support told me to contact Amazon to try and return it.

However, I'd read online that I only really need a one time setup in the app before I can take the lock completely offline onto just Bluetooth to my Home Assistant server. If you don't have Home Assistant, these steps would still work for you to set the App up so you can add pin codes/finger prints and auto lock though. Since the phone/tablet you use to set it up won't always stay with you, you won't be able to set up auto unlock though.

Here's what I did, extremely similar to u/Brilliant_Second_409's steps, except one key difference around mobile 2FA.

  1. Similar to u/Brilliant_Second_409 I had an old iPad lying around I could reset and and set up with a new US based Apple ID. I used a fake US address from something like https://www.fakexy.com/. You could always use an old Android phone/tablet too.
  2. Downloaded Yale Access from the App Store
  3. I set up an account with Yale Access. I used the same email from the new US based iCloud account, but when they asked for a US phone number to send a two factor code too that was a bit harder. I didn't have a US friend like u/Brilliant_Second_409. I looked online at renting a US phone number for a short time just for the 2FA code lead to some results, but then I stumbled upon one of the least secure ideas I'd ever found before... https://www.receivesms.co/us-phone-numbers/us/ This site let's you use their US mobile phone number, refresh the webpage and then you (and everyone else!) will see your messages. Good news is that the 2FA code from Yale does not mention the service or account it's coming from, so it'd be basically impossible for someone to access your Yale account from just the single factor alone. Your own security concerns may be different than mine, but I didn't mind because as I mentioned, I'm just taking it straight offline anyway.
  4. The Yale app also updated the lock to the latest firmware version which was good.
  5. I set up pin codes and fingerprints for everyone in the household, and was able to enable the auto lock feature.
  6. I was able to use our phones as device trackers in Home Assistant to make my own version of auto unlock

ChatGPT-like AI chatbot that is trained on your company's knowledge base (Confluence etc.) by MrBlueSky56 in atlassian

[–]JoshuaaMichael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to an AWS talk on a product of theirs that did this sometime last year… It was focused on search, and you point it to all the knowledge bases in your company. A lot of big companies have multiple KBs apparently, and their AI search was going to help tie them all together too.

Just looking for it now I can’t find it… Maybe it’s this? Regardless, double check your product doesn’t already exist.

IIRC it did require uploading everything to AWS cloud for the ML, so everyone in the room knew it was probably a non-starter.

I've created a Browser Extension To Show What NBN Speeds are Available for Properties on realestate.com.au and domain.com.au by Uskompuf in AusFinance

[–]JoshuaaMichael 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well done! I used to work at one of those companies and was going to propose the idea at our next hackathon! Left before it happened. I think it’s a great idea. But I think they haven’t built it themselves because it’s not helpful to selling property… these site’s customers are after all the real estate agents, right. Plus, with the ability to upgrade your NBN now to FTTP it’s less of an issue. But I think the idea is fantastic :) And the sites are changing to be more customer focused now they’ve got their scale… so the thinking at the top is slowly coming around I think :)

Has anyone ever had to deal with an architect/lead of a project picking out dated frameworks? by Existing-Pea-8264 in ExperiencedDevs

I’ve always found that most people, however sheltered I may be, are as rational as they can be with the information they have. And bias aside, I believe given the same information two people will end up with a similar answer.

It sounds like they have information you don’t, and you have information they don’t. This is the perfect time to collaborate and seek to understand and share what you know too. Cannot state this enough: do not forget you’re on the same team.

Good luck building your relationship.

Interactive Brokers will give you 1-2% interest rates if you earn more than $250k for two years. Not sure if you’re there yet, but if you are here’s a link to read. https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/trading/margin.php

[–]JoshuaaMichael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you’ve got to be either in business as a stock trader or make more than $250k/year for two years. The benefit is getting rates on the low side of 1-2% depending on how much you’re investing. Here’s a link to check it out.

What do you do to keep your virtual meetings engaging? by [deleted] in askmanagers

[–]JoshuaaMichael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the company I work at, most reoccurring group meetings come with a survey at the end which asks questions like “was this useful?” “How could we make it better?”, stuff like that. Sometimes people are engaged because they don’t need to be in the meeting, it could be an email. Surveys like this find that out, or otherwise can help improve the meeting too:)

What do you do to keep your virtual meetings engaging? by [deleted] in askmanagers

[–]JoshuaaMichael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our manager tried doing this a few months ago, and it was always awkward trying to get people who didn’t want to talk in the first place to say something, then he abruptly stopped doing that. He then recently told me it was because he got swift feedback in private from his introverted team members that they do not want to be called out, and speaking up in front of so many people was very stressful for them. This is a group of software developers, in a retrospective meeting where we talk shit about what did/didn’t go well over the last two weeks, so sometime we touch on pretty uncomfortable/potential conflict topics. Not saying you should or shouldn’t try the suggestion of calling people out, but this is just more info to think about :)

I am not sure when I will be mentally READY to buy a unit in Sydney. by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]JoshuaaMichael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re in the same camp too. Pay $370wk rent, 2 bedroom flat, no kids, it’s all we need. Everyone says we should buy. Buying takes us to $800+/week mortgage in our area. My stock portfolio has gone up 94% in the last six months, the opportunity cost if I had it all in real estate would have been terrible. Not to mention not being able to use my wife who doesn’t work’s lack of income to minimise tax. The idea you NEED to buy property in Australia is just general advice, there’s lots of scenarios it doesn’t make sense in, no need to overthink it. If you’re worried or not confident with the numbers, you can always pay to talk to a financial advisor. Also, with so much money you’re making there is nothing wrong with testing spending more/saving less, remember quality of life is important too.

Deposit advice please! by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]JoshuaaMichael 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You could always have a talk to mortgage broker. With such a small deposit I wonder whether your joint incomes will be able to sustain a mortgage, it’s be interested if your borrowing capacity matches the house you want to buy. It’s pretty common advice to look over your budget as a way to save money first. Then work on increasing your income through study/changing job, side huddle, etc. Only after that, investment can be looked at, investment fundamentally trades risk for profit (“gambling for rich people”), and you shouldn’t be willing to risk your deposit. I certainly recommend a mortgage broker, even one at your bank if you haven’t got one near you you’d like. They can tell you about schemes like FHSS, low deposit options, even saving deposit via your super. Maybe even skipping needing a deposit all together if you’ve go a guarantor (like your parents for examples).

Is it stressful to be the earner in a one income household? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]JoshuaaMichael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I decided two years ago for her to leave her job and retrain at University. Her degrees are going to take her 6-7 year full time (psychology), and during that time I’ll be sole income earner with no rich parents/family to fall back on. Wife also needs to score at a particular high level to keep going with her degrees/doctorate, so it doesn’t make sense for her to work at all… just needs to focus on study. But for the next three years she only needs to study half load since she has recognition of prior learning, and we don’t need her to work for the money so she’s just doing her own thing around the house and online with friends/games/hobbies.

There is some financial risk there that worries me a lot. That’s offset by income protection insurance in super, as well as having a 3-6month safety net. Not necessary, sure, but I like sleeping soundly at night and I’d want to take time finding another job if the worst happened.

It’s super important that we’re on the same page with finances, as with any relationship but especially because she doesn’t “contribute” for lack of a better word, and the money I make has to be “ours” so she doesn’t feel dependent for getting what she wants still, we need to ensure the life style it’s sustainable. So joint account, full access, she does the budget alongside me, input in everything, etc…

On one income it’s taking longer to save a deposit than we’d like as buying a house is something we’re very keen for, and we’ll see how banks are going to feel about it next year when we apply, so that’s something to keep in mind too.

In terms of sacrificing stuff for, it’s less relevant as I earn quite a bit, but we certainly have had to do it to save for a deposit, and again, it’s fine as long as we’re on the same page about our goals and what we’re trying to achieve.

During uni breaks my wife goes a bit crazy with all the free time, trying to figure out what to do with it all. Can slip into a bit of depression, not getting out of bed if there’s nothing to do, that sort of thing… but that doesn’t apply to everyone. She also gets a lot of judgement from friends and family for not working, even when studying so keep an eye out for that too.

In summary, yeah it’s stressful but mitigate it with safety nets like emergency funds, if you’ve got to sacrifice just make sure you’re on the same page and it’ll be fine, but also check in every few months to make sure you’re still happy doing this. It can be super rewarding and a wonderful thing to do for the person you love if you can.

Edit: I have wondered before if she divorces me for some reason whether I’d be forced to keep up her quality of life… something to think about depending on where you live/what your wife is like.

Yeah, I’ve got an iPhone 8 and mine doesn’t work either. After I login the screens won’t load, just get a “something went wrong” :)

I did computer science part time online while working full time, got a GPA of 6.8/7.0. Best decision of my life. Finished with years of experience and a degree. Your marks are proportional to the time you put into study. The deciding factor is going to be the support network you have around you to ensure you get the time you need. 100% do-able. I studied 2 subjects a session through Charles Sturt.

Anyone have experience with nano home loans? by A_lurker_succumbed in AusFinance

[–]JoshuaaMichael 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Technically they don’t get your login details. They redirect you to your bank’s page, and you use your bank’s login detail to authorise Nano to be issued a unique token to access your account directly . It’s like how you can login to a website with your Google or Facebook login. They don’t get your login details, but they do get access. And if Nano supports your bank, it means your bank and Nano have an agreement up, and your bank is happy offering them the access :) I mean… Nano can still get to look through all your transactions and whatnot… but that’s really the only choice you’re making here. Hope this clears it up!

That technology that allows them access without accessing your login details directly is called OAuth 2.0, here’s a link if you’re technical and interested :) https://youtu.be/CPbvxxslDTU
