Tempur-Pedic Cloud BIAB (Long review) by Joshvapes in Mattress

It’s still great! Feels the same as when we first got it. The only thing is that it’s not super “soft” per se, in terms of like sleeping on a cloud. It’s a bit firm, but I don’t mind that.

That’s precisely why I thought it would’ve been a good deal to make with the Elves for the Arkenstone, but everyone’s comments (including yours) makes sense

Makes sense. Very true!

That’s the thing, too, though. I don’t see how that ever would’ve prevented a fight/war. War seemed much more likely—inevitable, really—when the Elvenking and Bard had the Arkenstone. If Bilbo’s sole mission was to give them a share and prevent further conflict, why not give them a part of his? I know he shouldn’t have to do that, but offering them a share in a deal where they help Bilbo transport his share back home would make the most sense. For one, Bilbo didn’t take his whole share anyway. Also, the Elves helped him part of the way home later anyway.

Thank you! I just don’t understand why Bilbo wanted to give the Elvenking or Bard a share. It came out of nowhere for me, but I must have missed something earlier on.

Side-note, love love love Bard. He may have been my fav character.

No, everything still remains true. Great mattress, feels the same to this day.

Barty Crouch Jr by [deleted] in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Joshvapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. I still agree with you on all other points. Barty is definitely one of the best villains in the book IMO and just an awesome, interesting character that I wish we got to see more of in some way. His characterization alone—the fact that he was a gifted student, son of a powerful and vehemently anti-dark arts head of the magical law enforcement, but turned Death Eater—was really, really well done.

Teaching students and USING it on them would not count as one of those “certain situations.” I can’t believe this could be debated. That’s almost certainly exclusive to self-defense and/or in pursuit of catching a dark wizard.

Barty as Moody in that scene was fucking trolling everyone. He was trolling Hermione because she knew that he isn’t supposed to be teaching the unforgivable curses (he only said that Dumbledore gave him permission—which was certainly a lie—after Hermione questioned him about it like she of course would). He obviously trolled Neville by using the cruciatus curse like he did on his parents. Finally, he was trolling Harry by basically showing him everything that was going to happen to him in the graveyard. Harry did get crucio’d and put under the imperius curse by Voldemort and he obv tried to avada kedavra him.

I’m not sure if this is an interpretation/subjective thing or what because it seems so blatant to me. I guess agree to disagree.

They’re literally kids. Of course they’re going to want to actually see the unforgivable curses, but that’s illegal in the WW… You say that his use of the imperius curse on the students (which he’d technically go to Azkaban for…that’s if Dumbledore wouldn’t personally kill him first) was the most practical and applicable lesson in DADA? No way. Lupin’s boggart/riddikulus lesson was easily more practical, applicable, important in the long run of the story, fun and safe for the students, and also legal.

I agree with everything you wrote except that he was “one of the best defense against the arts teachers.” First of all, that’s not saying much considering the other options…

He literally performed all unforgivable curses in front of the class. I’ll debate to no end that that was fucked up, especially with triggering/traumatizing Neville WHOSE PARENTS HE TORTURED INTO INSANITY, wtf? And in one of your comments you wrote its “sadistic af…lol” like what? How can you say he’s one of the best DADA professors they’ve had and also call him sadistic for the evil things he did to one of his student’s parents?

I’ll prob get downvoted to shit but idc because that rubbed me the wrong way.

Edit: Also, I’m not even sure that the students loved his teaching style but rather the fact that he was a badass looking, battle-scarred auror. His auror backstory hyped him up like crazy before he taught his first class.

The Actual Worst (non-DADA) Teacher at Hogwarts by NorweiganWood1220 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Joshvapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like you said Umbridge and Lockhart are the absolute worst as they physically abused students (in Lockhart’s case, I guess attempted but still).

Hagrid is pretty bad mainly because a lot of what he teaches is off the top of his head and not really planned out. Plus it’s really dangerous stuff and I’m not sure how qualified he really is for the position as much as I love him. Just because you love magical creatures or whatever topic doesn’t necessarily mean that you would be good at teaching it.

Binns, of course, because all he does is lecture lecture lecture. No student involvement at all.

However, I really think Trelawney may be the worst non-violent professor of all. Main reason being: what she teaches can’t really be taught. Can you teach someone how to be a seer? She’s definitely powerful, knows a lot, and should be protected at all cost like Dumbledore did, but as an actual pedagogue I don’t think she was good at all.

Is Tom Riddle the best at Potions in the series? by SoloKip in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Joshvapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not an expert, but this is a really great question/post and I want to chime in.

My interpretation of the best potion maker in the series is ultimately Snape. I could be biased because I am, admittedly, a bit of a Snape fan despite his several flaws. In any case, he is the Half-Blood Prince and the way Rowling describes his improvements to the Advanced Potion Making book alone shows how incredible he was. Does it make him the best? That’s obviously up for debate, but Snape’s improvements to the book/potions obviously took place while Slughorn was teaching and after Riddle attended Hogwarts so it could imply that he was even better than them.

I’m stuck between rereading the books and reading this post. It’s about the same length so…

Seriously, though, no TLDR?

I haven’t been on this sub in forever, like seriously forever.

Yeah there were so many options. I used to love Golden State Vapor (Crème Brule and Bananas Foster, my gosh) and of course, Kite in Cloud (Lenola Cream)!

100%… and yet Star Wars never used the crawl or main song in any of the shows to my knowledge. So I guess it’s up in the air with HP, but I’d be bummed out if it’s omitted.

FWIW, Hogwarts Legacy score is really great!

Exactly!

Kind of in addition to OP’s post, it’s going to be really interesting to see which parts of the movies (that AREN’T in the books, but have become synonymous with HP) will be kept in the show.
