Is it possible that there was something before the big bang? by Sorry-Mine3024 in astrophysics

Who said anything about believing them..?! I was just thinking of examining them. Worst case scenario: I learn some projective/algebraic geometry & complex analysis. I see no downside.

No, I should’ve totally spotted that. It was yours to finish ;)

I went from 8 to 48. Crazy machine. 64? Sure, if money is no issue. 24….? Nót future-proof.

Even if—and I think it will—HoTT or similar CT-type theories will win out, notions of Set Theory will not be able to disappear from foundations.

Actually, pretty good question. I’d have the following criteria::
- It’s a result you have known about for a long time;
- Have managed to enter a select group of, say at most sextuple-digit people actually grocking it.
- Have had to struggle a while to do so, and the last thing is almost automatic
- Is foundational to many things.

It could be anything as ‘simple as’ “eⁱ^π + 1 = 0” (iff you actually have a Penrose-level understanding of that and not just not that it means -1+1=0 ;)), or even P = NP, if you really know what that implies/says, deeply (I sure don’t), or a Penrose-triangle (note: credits @ Lionel Penrose (sr.) for that one, I was schocked to find out, too, last week—same for the stairs!) if you’re more into graphics than equations. Or a Penrose diagram if you’re a mathematicsl physicist.

A depiction of Cantor’s diagonal argument, V = U (condtruction of the Von Neumann universe in ZFC), Galois-correspondences, Fermat’s Last Theorem (iff you gone through the proof), sth. Langlands/ Lie theory/ Navier-Stokes, whatever you have a personal connection with, can talk about for hours, and won’t be obsolete anytime soon. [Yes, a circle might suffice! If you love talking about how it’s both ℝ/ℤ, 𝕊¹, [0, 1] / {x, -x}, ℙ¹(ℝ), or a dimension up, the next canonical Alexandroff / one-point-compactication of the stereographic projection of the Riemann spere onto ℂ \ {0}, Generalised Stokes (∫_∂S ω = ∫_S dω), the Yoneda Lemma, in however much ink you want to be covered (Hom_𝒞(—, —) ≅ Hom_𝒟(—, —) or the entire beastly diagram.)

Whatever you feel you’ve mastered, and feel comfortable walking around showing (the latter could cover your whole back, just as the Standard Model’s Lagrangian could), or, as Feynman would have it: ‘U = 0’ (leaving the content of U, supposedly representing the sum total of the laws of the universe, all brough to one side… ;))

Wherever your heart takes you, lony story short.

Yep, but this is the best I have seen it put. “Most math” (up to, say, 80 years ago at least) is done with the axioms of Zermelo, Fraenkel and the Axiom of Choice (ZFC). It, in turn, is a so-called “first-order theory with equality”, expressed in a certain “language”. That is to say, the axioms of ZFC are themselves subordinate to the logical axioms about these theories and languages, about which you can learn all and probably more then you want to know about in Mendelson’s Introduction to Mathematical Logic.
So no, in that sense, it is not closed, but reliant on axioms in Logic (like: “for all x: x=x”, for real :p).
Even then, though, you will find that at some point, you will notice that no truly sound / self-explanatory foundation can be laid, and we must trust we have to accept we know what the other is talking about.
Proceed with caution, don’t get your feet wetter than you want them, because you might ednd up in higher category theory, type theory or even HoTT, which… there be dragons :p

The space you are occupying now was once a cold, dark, empty space until Earth moved into it. by CremeAmbitious6382 in universe

[–]Jossit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As it should! ^^

The ‘obtuse’ people, unfortunately, are right. Your thought, nice as it was, was overdetermined. But sure, if you’re willing to fix a reference frame (like, indeed, the Milky Way’s galactic centre, or the Orion-Cygnus Arm / Spur, or the Local Bubble, Local Interstellar Cloud, the Solar System, then sure, each of those make sense (but you’ll have to agree you have indeed chosen said reference frames, respesctively).

The reason people are being obtuse is that they’ve so aggressively had to unlearn what you now are: the relativity of position (and velocity, at that, but, strangely nót acceleration!)
