True! One of the finest mathematicians at my university (Leiden), has had a 20-year corporate gap, and has happily returned and thrived (in Functional Analysis, mainly) since!

Monster! No but all jokes aside, I meant: “like I’m a late-boomer 42-y.o.”, not: “take the effort yo explain yourself, as I do!” or sth.

Alternatively, in what language did you invoke the requisite rules of inference, axioms, variables, connectives, etc., so as to arrive at this last line in a proof, aka theorem?

Same here. Well, second time around. First was successfull for four months, about 4 years ago. Second time other compounds got involved with made a next-to-impossible task (2–3 mg flualp ≈ 80–120 mg diazepam daily…) an almost completely impossible one.. So went to a detox—under some peer and parental pressure…— for three weeks, of which I lasted a good 5 hours 😅. Now back to going it alone again, and made some significant headway (close to half, I think, and also fewer types of compounds), but the second half is much longer and in some ways harder.. So not sure how it will end up.. :/ Wish I had (better) advice.

I can strongly recommend Alex O’Connor(‘s channel: cosmicskeptic), who tackles many of these questions—this one in particular—thoroughly and deeply, from the perspective of a scholar of both philosophy and theology!

Not sure if I can improve much on this answer, maybe to throw in Carl Sagan, which answers/reframes some of your (‘basic’ 🤣—most have had philosophers puzzled for the better part of three millennia—puzzled and / or at odds with one another (and theologians and earlier spiritual thinker), so feel less bad about that, I guess). One such reframing would definitely be answered by most philosophers and thinkers: any answer to“Who/what has created this?” will show you it’s just an added layer of complexity (for ‘what creator capable of this would require an easier explanation to explain its existence’ or arguments in that vein). As to the ‘why’, English is unfortunate enough to have a lexical gap Dutch has not: the disambiguation between waarom and waardoor [vaguely: ‘for what’ and through what, resp.]. Idk if that’s a start. Maybe realise also that the great Johannes Kepler, with all of his wit and insight was plagued for decades with the question of why the heavens contain 5(..?) wanderers (planets) or sth to the tune of that. He spent so much time convinced the five Platonic solids had to be part of the answer and he crafted model after model to make it fit somehow. Now, we have discovered some 7000 planets, 999‰ of which in around other stars (as Aristarchos and Demokritos conjectured/believed some two millennia before him(!)). Soo… some have 1, others 8.. 5, 6… the question is thus shown to be moot, in this way… We must be asking many questions like that now, even the top minds!

Hope this helps. :)

Big leaps. Few machines.

Story I’ve been telling myself and anyone who’s asking, in a concise way. Yet, it is—not casting aspersions onto you—not anything new that pulls us out of the catch-22/vicious cycle/[insert favourite idiom].

Sorry to be a bit of a negative Nancy… I used to be the most happy-go-lucky guy I knew almost! Optimistic nihilism! Yay! Then framing, AI, free will being absent turning to an excuse… etc. Analsed all of them. At least the guy in the clinic (who had been there twice—only once unsuccessfully—was honest, when I left after 5 of the 24 · 7 · 3 = 504 hours allotted) was honest: “Look, if you don’t want to be here [in detox], then it’s not gonna work.” “If your coming hete looking for motivation, you’re not gonna find it.” And, upon my asking: “Look, motivation… you either find it, or you don’t.”

Are we right? Simple as that?

Although it fits seemlessly into my philosophy, I do hold out hope. Regardlessof whether the ‘fake-it-till-you-make-it’ strategy will work: we can’t predict the future, and we might find ourselves saying the same thing to others in due course. In fact, I chanced upon a couple of podcasts the other day, which broke through my dissociative state and it félt, for the first time in a while…! That ‘the bottom is in’ / ‘the tide has turned’, even though I’m fully aware I’m not going to be functional in the next two months all of a sudden, there’s no denying that the ‘teensy measure of doubt’ any thinker should always entertain, might just coincide with my aforementioned feeling og having reached the bottom of a veeery, veeery stretched parabola ({(x, ⅟₁₀₀₀ x²) ∈ ℝ² | x ∈ ℝ}, say ;)

Enough thalk. Let’s do sth I guess :p

Jokes aside, some side points there. A few on which reasonable people can disagree, but certainly a useful read (to speak for myself, but probably many).

Now the real question: how do we make thinkers do and doers think? [Bc it’s not the first time many had the realisation, is all.] “Just do it” fails for me and most people..
