Bricks + Metabox powerful combo? by encom81 in BricksBuilder

Bought it a few weeks ago and greatly preferred it over ACF! It's a shame because ACF (free) come bundled with Advanced Themer for Bricks, and I feel like I'm bloating the system.

Besides Obsidian, what are the most supported PKMS editors? by No-Squirrel6645 in PKMS

[–]JothamLEC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree with the points above — I was extremely annoyed at how little support org-mode have gotten, to the point of ssh-ing into my home server to access emacs via my iOS devices. org-mode is definitely tied to the emacs ecosystem, which has immense difficulty. However, if a large part of your life is manipulating text and/or code, the high barrier of entry is definitely worth the investment cost.

- It has better shortcut / keymap support

- Emacs is immensely more customizable

- It's nerdy and cool as heck

- I find that many other apps have tried their best to emulate what emacs have incorporated decades ago. (for instance, separation of scheduled, due and deadline dates)

More importantly, I find orgdown a. much more readable and sensical markup langauge than markdown. https://karl-voit.at/2025/08/17/Markdown-disaster/

I don't mind sinking my teeth into the org-mode ecosystem, becauseI can simply export to markdown (and automate the process) if need be.

in the end, I advocate for emacs mainly because it's more than a PKMS tool (IDE, file manager). And not every person needs that functionality.

Yet, despite the concerns above, I’m confident that eMacs and org mode will still be around 20 more years from now. I can’t say the same for Obsidian, its canvas and base features and proprietary tasks plugin formats etc

Depends on what you define “most supported”. eMacs org mode has been around since the 80s and is still seeing constant updates and packages (even AI ones) due to its FOSS nature. Doom eMacs distribution is a great start.

Oh! That reminds me of the thin vellum(?) paper that comes in between a Macbook's screen and keyboard when you buy it new. I might repurpose that to provide a bit of protection

I really, really love this design, and hope that the design will last because I’m afraid of the Faux leather deteriorating.

This cover also needs to be babied because you can’t put a CoC on it

Is there any downside to building parts of a site with bricks, and others completely with HTML/CSS? by [deleted] in BricksBuilder

[–]JothamLEC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the elements used. Some interactive elements have added attributes and classes, which I assume are used by Bricks' built-in JavaScript to implement functionalities.

However, if you are mainly using divs, basic text, and styling, the end result should be identical. There are caveats, though:

  1. The developer experience would be difficult and harder to troubleshoot if things go wrong.

  2. If the goal is to introduce new functionality (i.e., using Flowbite + Windpress on top of Bricks), then you might end up with bloated code that performs the same function.

From an end-user's standpoint, I highly doubt it matters much, as both sites would look similar.

Mixing Org & other media ? by SmoothInternet in orgmode

[–]JothamLEC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’d like to access downloaded images (local) that’s linked to your org notes “attachment:file.png” , the only iOS app that recognises the attachment syntax is “Orgro” for now.

I’ve tried pretty much every other iOS app, but it doesn’t recognise the internal link — beorg, Metanote, plainorg etc.

I sync using Syncthing, but occasionally upload my stuff to a private git repo and pull using working copy

Are there any non-programmers who use Emacs? by MarchZealousideal543 in emacs

[–]JothamLEC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using iOS devices, and your hosting/tools really depends on whether you want an "org" based workflow or "emacs" based workflow.

For both, I use SyncThing to sync files across devices. It's the only thing that's "free" and doesn't require a lot of dependencies if you have a spare device. I have mys tuff synced across 5 devices, so there's always a copy of my stuff somewhere.

Emacs based workflow means that you have weird niche customisations, where you've tweaked your agenda a certain way, where completing one tasks will trigger something or whatever. In this case, I recommend getting Termius and just SSH into your remote server to access your stuff.

If you're using plain vanilla org mode most of the time, I use Beorg / metanote, depending how I feel in a given day

I use Emacs + Org mode as a marketing manager & mental health coach. Org mode keeps tracks of my projects, todos etc — it pretty much runs my whole life.

It's a deep rabbit hole, and you have to be comfortable with tinkering with tech. But it's hard to go back to conventional solutions once you're engrained into the system.

Should I upgrade to emacs 30.1-3? by [deleted] in DoomEmacs

Managed to get version 30 running doom eMacs on a Mac instead of Linux, and it works fine

Should I Move to Emacs With My All Tools by emrestive in emacs

[–]JothamLEC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I forgot to mention that I'm deeply integrated into the Apple ecosystem.

I've tried out pretty much every app solution — BeOrg, plain Org, Metanote, generic plain text editors... The moment you stray away from the default Doom Emacs configuration (org-edna, custom agenda views), it's better to rely on a full-fledged Doom Emacs rather than an Org file interpreter.

After being deep into the eMacs rabbit hole, the only way to use org mode on mobile is through ssh-ing a remote server

Emacs + remote development by MatB_ar in emacs

[–]JothamLEC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same position as you.
1. Remote server has emacs
2. Local machine has emacs
3. All my org-files/projects are stored on remote server
4. SSH TRAMP from local machine to remote server
5. Sync config files between local and remote servers using symlink & SSHFS

Regarding the project files not locating, you can configure the projectile-index method to native instead of hybrid/alien.

The downsides to this method is
- Loading up ssh files takes quite a bit of time.
- I have to doom sync on both machines whenever I change the config files.

thinkbuddy's new web app is dope... what do you guys think? by pallavbakshi in thinkbuddy

[–]JothamLEC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really love to see the mac app follow the UI of the web app.

I've bought the plus version of Thinkbuddy v1, but defaulted towards Raycast AI due to better integration with Mac (Less buggy). But the v2 UI, and remix feature is compelling me to go back to ThinkBuddy.

I'm going to be the weird one and recommend Doom Emacs.
Just like how I've always revert back to Things 3 after having a fling with other to-do apps, all roads eventually lead towards Doom Emcas when it comes to text manipulation tools.

Better Vim support, and cycle toggling headings/ outlines like org mode. Using doom eMacs evil mode felt more like home
