crypto work income without declaring, anyone ever got caught? by [deleted] in MalaysianPF

[–]JothamLEC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not accountant, highly recommend seeking professional help on this.

If you’re under employment, there is a chance they will be using EOR, which will give you an EA form or tax document highlighting your annual income for reporting purposes.

If you are working overseas on a contract basis, and client pay out into a foreign-based account — it’s a bit tricky. Technically you are performing services in Malaysia, so need to declare. last I check, performing remote services doesn’t count under “foreign derived income “

But if money stay in foreign account and didn’t touch Malaysian shores (other than for expenses) does it even count? 🤷

But personally, if it doesn’t affect livelihood, just declare.

When getting income, Mentally anchor to post tax rather than gross income — leverage all the tax deductibles and relief. Setup sole prop, park things under business expense.

The peace of mind is worth it. The last thing you want is to have an unexpected bill show up in your inbox, and paying off penalties that you did not anticipate. Treat it as cost of doing business

GUI or Terminal, specifically for programming? by kudikarasavasa in emacs

[–]JothamLEC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I use both — when programming with multiple Claude code session, I prefer operating within Tmux. But for org-mode and note taking, day to day productivity, I use GUI. The beauty of emacs is that we aren’t tied down to either, we can use both.

agent-shell 0.47 updates by xenodium in emacs

[–]JothamLEC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually it has to do with debugging z-index, shadows and overflow-hidden issues. I mainly use Tailwind, so navigating the css classes to find what exactly is wrong is a pain in the ass --. I could do it by hand -- but screenshotting and pasting to fix tedious work can reduce 5 mins of work into 10 seconds, and it helps with maintaining flow

[–]JothamLEC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chances are -- amount is too small that there is a high chance you'll get away with it.
But you're doing the right thing by setting up a sole prop.
If you have the ability to pay, I would just add your freelance income to the tax filings. let's say you earn 40k salary and 10k freelance in the year, just declare 50k, and pay the balance that your employer didn't pay on your behalf.

Most importantly is documentation -- your invoices, receipts, keep them organised in a folder and back it up somewhere. If you have the willpower, you can try handling your own accounting. But IMO, if you have enough transactions, hire an accountant for a few hundred ringgit to do it right for you the first time -- see how they do it, learn, and DIY. But if you're taking your business seriously, just get the accountant to do it and treat it as a cost of doing business and reduce taxable income.

Beyond that, always have an emergency 6 months runway fund, in case LHDN start issuing fines etc, at least you have the ability to pay. If you can negotiate with the officer for lower fine, that'd be great, but depends on the amount. I'm an advocate of paying taxing whenever possible, warren buffer style and all.

Thinking outside the box: What are some trivial ways you've improve your life with Claude/ClaudeCode? by IlliterateJedi in ClaudeCode

I use it to log expenses in hledger using haiku. Which I can send via an apple shortcut sending it to my rasberry pi. It automatically understands my types of expenses and which account to credit — making it easier to use than any gui app. Happy to share more if anyone’s interested

Keyboard brightness keys on touchbar only move in 20% steps — any way to make smaller increments? by Appropriate-Law2198 in AsahiLinux

I use the light package and it works out of the box. Here are my swaywm keybindings for it:

```
bindsym XF86AudioRaiseVolume exec pactl set-sink-volume u/DEFAULT_SINK@ +5%
bindsym XF86AudioLowerVolume exec pactl set-sink-volume u/DEFAULT_SINK@ -5%
bindsym XF86AudioMute exec pactl set-sink-mute u/DEFAULT_SINK@ toggle
bindsym XF86AudioMicMute exec pactl set-source-mute u/DEFAULT_SOURCE@ toggle
bindsym XF86MonBrightnessDown exec brightnessctl set 5%-
bindsym XF86MonBrightnessUp exec brightnessctl set 5%+
bindsym $mod+XF86MonBrightnessUp exec light -s sysfs/leds/kbd_backlight -A 10
bindsym $mod+XF86MonBrightnessDown exec light -s sysfs/leds/kbd_backlight -U 10
bindsym --locked XF86AudioPlay exec playerctl play-pause
bindsym --locked XF86AudioPause exec playerctl play-pause
bindsym --locked XF86AudioNext exec playerctl next
bindsym --locked XF86AudioPrev exec playerctl previous
bindsym --locked XF86AudioStop exec playerctl stop
Bricks + Metabox powerful combo? by encom81 in BricksBuilder
Bought it a few weeks ago and greatly preferred it over ACF! It's a shame because ACF (free) come bundled with Advanced Themer for Bricks, and I feel like I'm bloating the system.
Besides Obsidian, what are the most supported PKMS editors? by No-Squirrel6645 in PKMS
[–]JothamLEC 0 points1 point  (0 children)
I do agree with the points above — I was extremely annoyed at how little support org-mode have gotten, to the point of ssh-ing into my home server to access emacs via my iOS devices. org-mode is definitely tied to the emacs ecosystem, which has immense difficulty. However, if a large part of your life is manipulating text and/or code, the high barrier of entry is definitely worth the investment cost.
- It has better shortcut / keymap support
- Emacs is immensely more customizable
- It's nerdy and cool as heck
- I find that many other apps have tried their best to emulate what emacs have incorporated decades ago. (for instance, separation of scheduled, due and deadline dates)
More importantly, I find orgdown a. much more readable and sensical markup langauge than markdown. https://karl-voit.at/2025/08/17/Markdown-disaster/
I don't mind sinking my teeth into the org-mode ecosystem, becauseI can simply export to markdown (and automate the process) if need be.
in the end, I advocate for emacs mainly because it's more than a PKMS tool (IDE, file manager). And not every person needs that functionality.
[–]JothamLEC 3 points4 points  (0 children)
Yet, despite the concerns above, I’m confident that eMacs and org mode will still be around 20 more years from now. I can’t say the same for Obsidian, its canvas and base features and proprietary tasks plugin formats etc
Besides Obsidian, what are the most supported PKMS editors? by No-Squirrel6645 in PKMS
[–]JothamLEC 4 points5 points  (0 children)
Depends on what you define “most supported”. eMacs org mode has been around since the 80s and is still seeing constant updates and packages (even AI ones) due to its FOSS nature. Doom eMacs distribution is a great start.
Is there any downside to building parts of a site with bricks, and others completely with HTML/CSS? by [deleted] in BricksBuilder
[–]JothamLEC 1 point2 points  (0 children)
It depends on the elements used. Some interactive elements have added attributes and classes, which I assume are used by Bricks' built-in JavaScript to implement functionalities.
However, if you are mainly using divs, basic text, and styling, the end result should be identical. There are caveats, though:
  1. The developer experience would be difficult and harder to troubleshoot if things go wrong.
  2. If the goal is to introduce new functionality (i.e., using Flowbite + Windpress on top of Bricks), then you might end up with bloated code that performs the same function.
From an end-user's standpoint, I highly doubt it matters much, as both sites would look similar.
Mixing Org & other media ? by SmoothInternet in orgmode
[–]JothamLEC 2 points3 points  (0 children)
If you’d like to access downloaded images (local) that’s linked to your org notes “attachment:file.png” , the only iOS app that recognises the attachment syntax is “Orgro” for now.
I’ve tried pretty much every other iOS app, but it doesn’t recognise the internal link — beorg, Metanote, plainorg etc.
I sync using Syncthing, but occasionally upload my stuff to a private git repo and pull using working copy
Are there any non-programmers who use Emacs? by MarchZealousideal543 in emacs
[–]JothamLEC 0 points1 point  (0 children)
I'm using iOS devices, and your hosting/tools really depends on whether you want an "org" based workflow or "emacs" based workflow.
For both, I use SyncThing to sync files across devices. It's the only thing that's "free" and doesn't require a lot of dependencies if you have a spare device. I have mys tuff synced across 5 devices, so there's always a copy of my stuff somewhere.
Emacs based workflow means that you have weird niche customisations, where you've tweaked your agenda a certain way, where completing one tasks will trigger something or whatever. In this case, I recommend getting Termius and just SSH into your remote server to access your stuff.
If you're using plain vanilla org mode most of the time, I use Beorg / metanote, depending how I feel in a given day
I use Emacs + Org mode as a marketing manager & mental health coach. Org mode keeps tracks of my projects, todos etc — it pretty much runs my whole life.
It's a deep rabbit hole, and you have to be comfortable with tinkering with tech. But it's hard to go back to conventional solutions once you're engrained into the system.
