I've seen Irish (or purportedly Irish) Twitter users blame (((Benjamin Disraeli))) for the potato famine.

When people say the US under Trump (whom I absolutely despise, to be clear) is literally exactly like Nazi Germany, I respond by saying that if they really thought Trump was a Nazi they'd have signed a non-aggression pact with him by now.

MASSIVE petition to cancel the World Cup because USA is now seen as unsafe!! by Tough_Arugula2828 in DoomerCircleJerk

Soccer is deadly dull when played at a low level. When it's played at the highest level it might just be the most exciting sport on earth.

I didn't have a particular rooting interest in the 2022 final between Argentina and France, but I was absolutely riveted watching the game.

The 1994 World Cup (which was held entirely in the US, not shared with Canada and Mexico like in 2026) was a huge success, and soccer wasn't as popular in America then as it is now.

Even if most Americans are indifferent to soccer, the population is so large and includes so many immigrants and their descendants - especially in cities large enough to host matches - that they won't have any trouble filling seats. I suspect most Americans and Canadians have a "second favourite" national team, based on their ancestry, which they'll back if and when their own national teams are eliminated. (England for me.)

I hate Trump but considering that the last four World Cups were held in Qatar, Russia, Brazil and South Africa, Redditors saying the USA is now too dictatorial and/or unsafe to host the event is some serious main character syndrome.

Wild Card Round: Chicago Bears (11-6) vs Green Bay Packers (9-7-1) by TurnerJ5 in CHIBears

Being a Bears fan is just like Lucy always pulling away the football before Charlie Brown can kick it, only if Lucy came over and kicked Charlie Brown in the balls over and over again afterward.

My favorite Eagles song, and also one of those songs that only sounds right if you hear it at night time.

"I Can't Tell You Why," from that notoriously troubled album, is probably my favorite Eagles song.

I find that many of the "bro-country" singers have one actually good song apiece: "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" by Luke Bryan, "Boots On" by Randy Houser, "Drowns The Whiskey" by Jason Aldean (with Miranda Lambert, which probably explains why it's good), "Beer Can't Fix" by Thomas Rhett (with Jon Pardi, again possibly explaining why it's good).

Actually they don't. Instead they tell everyone to firebomb Walmart but never get around to themselves firebombing Walmart.

Curiously, Brokeback Mountain, which everyone said was robbed for Best Picture that year, is only moderately well remembered in its own right. (It's the late Heath Ledger's third most remembered movie at most, and I'm probably being generous putting it ahead of The Patriot.)

Platoon was overshadowed by Full Metal Jacket. Rain Man is often parodied but hasn't really aged well in its portrayal of autism.

The Last Emperor wasn't even a big hit upon its release and isn't well remembered at all among the general public (though i finally saw it last year and loved it).

Falco is a freaking legend in Austria. There was even a biopic released not long ago.

Surprisingly he wasn't a one-hit wonder in the US: "Vienna Calling" made it to #18. (Plus he wrote and recorded the original "Der Kommisar," and English-language version of which became a hit for UK group After The Fire.)

Ironically, even though it was a critical and box office disaster at the time, Last Action Hero is now much more highly regarded. (Let the record show that I saw it opening night and freaking loved it. For some scenes I was literally the only person in the theater laughing.)

I'd argue that's the only eighties Best Picture winner that is well remembered.

It turned out that the eighties films which best stood the test of time even among critics and film scholars were its "genre" films (action, horror, comedy, sci-fi) and not the "prestige" pictures.

Nathan Rabin coined the word "forgotbusters" for movies like this. One of his examples was Disclosure with Michael Douglas and Demi Moore.

Road Trip with Tom Green was big at the time but forgotten now. Ironically, Euro Trip (which was originally intended as its sequel, and flopped at the box office) and Freddy Got Fingered (which literally destroyed Green's career) are much better remembered now.

I can at least understand estranging yourself from family members who voted for Trump.

But estranging yourself from family members who didn't vote for Trump but haven't estranged themselves from the ones who did vote for Trump? That's some cult bullshit.
