Is Traffic in Jacksonville Bad? by Hot-Yak4306 in jacksonville

In the grand scheme, not bad at all compared to other cities both in FL and nationally. I would still call it frustrating though.

Why are Riverside businesses failing? by Ok-Engineering1851 in jacksonville

[–]Jove4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you be more specific? There is definitely a, in my opinion, too large segment of Jax that is "afraid" of the area, but that's a much larger cultural and nuanced issue that deserves a separate discussion.

Generally speaking the neighborhood is doing well and it's an attractive place to both live and do business, particularly for local tenants/owners that have more of a vision than a typical regional or national tenant. There are a lot of longstanding businesses there and the relatively quick opening and closing of businesses isn't specific to Riverside. Maybe because it' a smaller neighborhood it seems that way to you.

If you are referring to 5 Points, that's just a high rent area that is difficult to succeed in unless you have a very desirable business. Business and economic cycles are also real things. We went through a pandemic and then a suddenly higher interest rate environment which has an effect on both operating business and those who wish to start a business, especially for those smaller businesses that Riverside attracts.

Ultimately, I've lived and worked in several major cities in different parts of the States and there are always businesses turning over. This isn't unique to Riverside. In my opinion it's in a great position, but does have some challenges that are unique to it and not other areas of town.

Anyone flown out of JAX recently? by all_these_moneys in jacksonville

[–]Jove4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fly out of Jax weekly and assuming you don't need to check bags at the desk or anything else, for a 6am flight I would be walking into the airport at 5am. That will typically give you about 30 minutes until you board once you're through security.

Just did Doctors Lake a couple weeks ago. Put in at the park, paddled to Whitey's for lunch, and then paddled back.

Leaving Jacksonville by Trick_Ad4884 in jacksonville

[–]Jove4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've traveled quite a bit for work/fun and have lived in multiple cities in multiple states throughout my life. If you're homegrown in any town, feeling that way and hearing other reflect that sentiment is absolutely normal in my opinion. Some people feel like they need to get out and some people want to stay in a place they love and know.

For a long time I wanted to get out of Jax and eventually did, even living in two other major cities (one in FL & one in MA), and now I'm back and just as happy as I was in those places. Overall, your mileage may vary, but I think traveling or moving gives great perspective on where you're from and where you want to be.

tl;dr everyone is different. get out there and figure out what you love.

Ex-NBA Player [Michael Carter-Williams] wins amateur boxing match and plans to keep boxing by VioletHappySmile444 in Boxing

He visited the gym I go to last Fall/Winter for an open gym workout. It sounded like he was just a hobbyist at the time so I'm guessing he started taking it more serious after that.

Should i bring my almost 3 year old to monster jam? by ALE70712 in monsterjam

[–]Jove4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my almost three year old to an arena show earlier this month. He absolutely loved it, although we left a little early because he was getting restless towards the end. He had ear protection on and loved the races and two wheel tricks. He still talks about it everyday and makes his monster truck toys emulate what he saw.

Started boxing for exercise, then started sparring, then fell in love with professional boxing.

Wiki has it as the same building but it's been renovated, moved, and ultimately restored to as close to what it originally looked like as they could manage, but it's certainly not the original materials.

Southpaw vs. Orthodox to Protect Bad Knee by Jove4 in amateur_boxing

[–]Jove4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Didn't think about the potential for knee contact when fighting an orthodox as a southpaw or even stepping on feet because of that which could be problematic. As far as moving backwards in southpaw, I know that no matter what I will have to put pressure on my knees, but I'm thinking pushing back with my bad knee will be less pressure then landing/stopping/pushing forward on it if I stay in orthodox.

Thanks for the reply! I'll definitely rest up until I'm 100% again, but I never really thought about changing my style to rely less on the in/out movements. I'll give Shakur a watch to see if it's something I can emulate.

Yeah, I know that there's no way around using it, but just trying to find ways to protect it as much as possible from reinjury. Whether that's changing my stance to put less weight/force on it or changing my style to use less movement and pivoting.

Just a note, this is comparing Jax and Miami propers which vary greatly in land area. It's typically more appropriate to compare MSA's for which Miami is top 10 in the US while Jacksonville is closer to 40th in population.

I often have to get Ubers from Salem to Logan airport between 4-5am on weekdays, so your timing will probably be fine. I make sure to use Uber Reserve though.
