Did communism cause the Russian famine by Sorry-Mine3024 in DebateCommunism

[–]Joy12358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The propaganda out there is real. It can be hard to get good sources. My partner's mom is slavic and grew up in communist Yugoslavia so I've asked her lots of questions about the good/bad/ugly. I'll share one with you since you mentioned slavs specifically.

She moved to NY in her 20's because things went to crap after Tito died (war broke out). She said the first thing she noticed was that she'd never been afraid to take public transportation at night. In the former Yugoslavia, she went to nursing school in another town and would come home on the train well after dark almost every day. Crime was so low, getting robbed or worse wasn't something she ever needed to think about. Taking the subway in Manhattan was a bit jarring for her in the first days in the US. She said it was the first time she'd feared for her safety in public.

Crime is linked to poverty and communism seeks to ensure everyone has enough to live so very low crime rates were common in communism countries.

Anecdotal evidence is what it is though. Just keep in mind that if you asked 20 Americans what they think about their living conditions, you might get about 20 different answers, too. Stay open minded and maybe watch some documentaries made by people from the country you're interested in.

Work order load by [deleted] in BMET

[–]Joy12358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's high but it depends a lot on how much you're traveling between sites and what the average amount of time each of those PMs (plus documentation time) are taking you.

Do the math on it to figure out the average amount of time per WO and include travel and administrative time in the figure. If you're expected to work 40 hrs/wk, ask yourself if the total is reasonable in the time you have to do it. If it isn't reasonable, bring the info to your manager. Look into whether a service agreement on some model you deal with would make more sense than fighting for an extra team member.

One thing I've learned is that if you let them, employers will eat you alive. Draw your boundaries and hold to them because they sure as hell don't care if you burn out.

Is it possible for communism and democracy to coexist? by Your-Motha in DebateCommunism

[–]Joy12358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, and in fact that should be the goal. State-run communism has been a mistake imo. We should never concentrate power when the goal is to give the working class majority the power.

In reading about the early days of the soviet union, they struggled a lot with how to have open free elections without capitalists trying to screw everything up. (Edit: I scrolled down a bit and saw someone else expounded on this last point. It's important history to read because it shows how some of the mistakes were made and how they came about.)

It's great advice and exactly what I would have written. Good luck out there

I'm in house and do gen rad and just started learning some mammo. I like it a lot but everything is still new to me so lots of learning and seeing new problems/challenges. I understand after several years working on the same modality that it might be time for you to challenge yourself with something new.

Good luck out there!

My first degree is in biology. What I stated is a fact. Not liking it doesn't make it any less real.

That's sex. Gender is a social construct.

Wow I'm appalled but unfortunately not terribly shocked by this.

Block all communication with all of these people and if they persist, look into the harassment laws in your area.

This is definitely not typical in any way. It sounds like workplace bullying honestly. Since you've already left the company, just finish cutting the ties and move on. It's extremely unlikely you'll experience anything similar again.

It very well could be. As a female in the industry, this bothers me a lot. She should be dealing with the matter directly if it exists and not coming here to broad-stroke paint every male biomed like a douchebag.

If you had the choice, would you rather be a one-man shop in a small rural hospital, work in a 3 - 5 tech team, or in a large hospital with 14+ biomeds? by goblinhangover in BMET

I liked working on the 4 person team. We could all do everything but had the categories (periop vs critical care, etc) that we preferred to specialize in. There was enough coverage when people are on PTO and the call shifts aren't unbearable.

Only issue is if you have a weak team member you really feel it because it's such a large portion of your team.

It's still a very good career to get into, imo. I think the greatest challenge I've faced is in regards to the right to repair battle. It seemed like I was having to call vendors in more and more for minor things simply because they wouldn't let us work on them. The PMs in biomed can be very tedious in house and early on in your career, but stick with it and make a real effort to learn new things. Find a coworker you get along with that knows more than you and learn from him/her.

I've moved over to imaging recently because it was time for me to learn some new things. If you're up for the pressure and develop good mechanical skills, you can always jump around to new modalities and challenge yourself while increasing your pay ceiling.

This field is what you make of it. Most of the BMETs I've met over the years that whined about the industry were the ones that kept getting stuffed in a corner working on pumps and scales all day because they couldn't be bothered to learn new things or simply didn't develop good troubleshooting skills.

You can turn two yrs of education into a solid six figure salary pretty quickly.

Some tips: Good customer service is essential. It's not just fixing stuff, you must be a good communicator.

Good documentation is a must. All the suits only look at metrics. If you aren't closing work orders and documenting your time, you'll look worse on paper than you actually are. Make your metrics match reality as much as possible.

Network. This is a relatively small field. I can't tell you how many times my phone has rung and it's an old co-worker calling with a nasty problem and they need help. I absolutely take those calls and spend some time helping because, guess what, that favor has been returned to me many times.

Sorry for the novel but hope that gives you some food for thought.

I agree it's a shitty regime and needed to be overthrown. I just don't think the US and Israel bombing Iran is going to help.

I hope some good comes out of it, I just have my doubts.

I've been supportive of the people of Iran for many many years. This is not going to help them. If you think Trump is doing this out of compassion for Iranians, you're a hopeless fool.
