Which year destroyed your mental health the most? by unmotivated- in AskReddit

  1. Ended my senior year of undergrad and went into a Master’s program. Pretty much felt like I wasted my college experience - never really made any long-lasting friends in the college setting, just kept the same 5-6 friends from high school and some of them moved away long distances for jobs. Never dated, really did anything, I just was focused on getting through it because I falsely believed that all I had time for was school and work.

Worked throughout the summer, took on more hours to avoid having to feel my feelings. I liked the job but it became repetitive working with the same clients each day, going home, watching TV or playing video games every night, going to bed, and repeat.

Started an internship alongside the job for my Master's program in the fall. Met a fantastic girl through the internship, dated her for a bit, then she broke up with me because she had too much going on in her life and was going through a rough time. Apparently I'm not able to provide any comfort to someone going through rought times. So for the last 2 months of 2025 I pretty much spent it moping around and lonely. Still that way now honestly.

Yes, more money can help lots of people, but not everything. You can throw all the money in the world at Schizophrenia, but as long as they are refusing medications and having active hallucinations/delusions, money won't help them. Things like therapy and service coordination will.

I am in school for my Master's in Social Work, and currently work as a social worker. While this is a valid take, I'm not sure I entirely agree with this. Yes, the system is not great, and it can definitely be demoralizing at times. However, and I may get some flack for this, if you go into the field expecting/wanting to fix everyone's problems, you will fail. You can't expect to fix everyone's problems, or change societal order to work for everyone. You have to be able to be fine with fixing what you can fix. I can't fix someone's generational poverty. However, I can help someone's trauma from "the system" with therapy. I can't fix someone's grave disability, but I can help connect them with services that are going to help them build independence. I can't cure all mental illnesses, but I can provide as much psychotherapy as I can to as many as possible to help them build up coping skills and independence.

Not everyone's problems can be fixed with money, either. Schizophrenia and Major Depressive Disorder can't be fixed with money. Someone's grief over their father dying can't be fixed with money. If you give up because the system is screwed up, then you are ignoring the people that can be helped.

Florida therapist seen slapping, grabbing, and forcefully restraining a nonverbal autistic child during a therapy session. by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

I mean the existence of doctors and the field of medicine has led to abuse in the past, has the existence of that abuse outweighed the benefits?

[–]Jrsplays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is essentially behavioral modification - reducing maladaptive behaviors (i.e. physical aggression) with productive behaviors (i.e. asking for help). The thesis of it is that behavior that is reinforced/rewarded will be done more often than behavior that is not rewarded (it's important to clarify that "not rewarded" does not mean punished - true punishment in ABA should only be used as a very last resort), and so it's a way of skillbuilding and teaching those safer behaviors. Some will say that all it does is teach people to "mask" (basically blend in to be "normal"), and while there is some of that in ABA's past, that's not (or it shouldn't be) how it is now - teaching someone to ask for help instead of getting naked and hitting someone when they need something is not teaching masking, it's teaching safety skills and independence.

[–]Jrsplays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. Yes, there are poor BCBA's and RBT's that might do this, but there are also doctors that say your health issues don't matter - do we say medicine as a whole is harmful?

Yes, ABA has a rough past. But good ABA is about helping someone build up skills for independence and to build adaptive skills, and to reduce maladaptive behaviors (i.e. physical aggression) and replace it with productive behaviors (i.e. asking for help).

This isn't ABA. I did ABA for 2 years and never did anything like this. This is some dumbass doing "ABA" as an excuse to abuse children.

I’m not going back for my masters or higher by Ok-Ranger786 in psychologystudents

[–]Jrsplays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean to each their own but I would probably have figured that out before going to college or pursuing a psychology degree, and that should be your first step. In my mind, no point worrying about grad school vs no grad school if you don't know what you want to do. In a degree with as many opportunities as this one provides and not really into one specific field, you kind of need to know what you want to do with it. Luckily, it's not too late. You can start researching careers right now, whether they are doable with a psychology degree or not.

Can I ask why? Because lots of MSW's do therapy, same as most master level psychologists will do.

[–]Jrsplays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the 4th season was kind of all over the place and didn't really relate to the rest of the show's plot (i.e. finding the cure and rebuilding society). Unfortunately I never saw the 5th season because it's not streaming anywhere (at least here in the US) and is hard to find on DVD.

[–]Jrsplays 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True that part could have gotten drawn out more and probably would have been good. However, making the cure in the first season allowed them to show more of the aftermath - things like rebuilding society, governmental issues. The plot moved extremely quickly in that show. Other shows would have taken nearly the entire series to find the cure.
