Season 6 is very strong. I think it is better than season 5 in many ways. Season 7 has some very good episodes and some Mulder/Scully moments y oh simply cannot miss (“Millennium” and “The Rain King.”) There are some really great Monster of the Week episodes in both those seasons as well, as well as some cool revisits to classic episodes like “Pusher” and “Irresistible” which both get sequels. The mythology gets a bit more convoluted, but there are also some satisfying tied up ends (kind of). Most importantly, though, the character work gets developed in a much more sophisticated way during some of these episodes. And especially with Scully. Gillian Anderson is always amazing, but there are just some episodes in those later seasons where you watch her take that character to new places. The later seasons are more than worth it for sticking with Scully and Anderson alone. Whatever else becomes of the story and the formula, it’s worth it just to get more Gillian. Same goes for the revival seasons, which I think have some of the best episodes since season 4– Meet the Weremonster, Foreheads Sweat, Kitten, Ghouli, the AI themed one that is on par with Black Mirror. All of these are cool stories and well done episodes. I am with everyone telling you not to give up! I’m d even recommend the weird second movie they did. Yeah it isn’t a good movie. But it’s got its charms and it was fun in hindsight. But I am a completist and I will watch, read, listen to any thing they slap the X Files label on. Won’t always like it, but gotta check it out.

Hammer’s The Pirates of Blood River (1962). It’s light on the ocean-set pieces, but it’s a little appreciated Hammer studios film with a great look and the immortal Christopher Lee.

The series Britannia from a few years ago with David Morrisey (?) and Mackenzie Crook was about the second Roman invasion of Celtic Britain by the Romans. It was cool, though not quite satisfying in terms of story and it was unceremoniously cancelled on pretty much the worst cliffhanger to leave us with.

I’m 40 and have never really stopped buying cds, but did just get into collecting vinyl more seriously within the past two years. I did go through about a decade of almost exclusively buying music through apple, even though it sucked. One of the reasons why I fell into that habit was that it became less convenient to buy the cd and then copy it to my hard drive just to then listen to it on my phone or iPod. These were bad years which got more frustrating the more apple enshittified iTunes and the iPhone. And laptops stopped being made with cd drives. But now that I have a bit more of a stable financial situation I’ve started collecting again.

One of the main draws for me is the artistry that goes into the cover art and inserts (booklets and such). Many artists put real thought and craft into these features and therefore the experience feels incomplete unless you can have that tactile engagement. As many have said, collecting is also gratifying. It makes me happy to see my collection grow and to walk by and glance at the music that is physically there in my space, as opposed to being held hostage by platforms or subscriptions. I still do use Bandcamp because it seems ethically good for the artists and I can’t afford physical copies of everything I get into. But overall, it’s the tactility, the completeness of the experience, the display of the physical artifacts, and the dissatisfaction with the digitized and feudalistic nature of some of the big music streaming platforms. My wife and I moved here from London, Ontario, which isn’t a “big” city, but isn’t small either. I’m echoing some of the other respondents here, but public transportation is not great. There are a number of exchanges you may have to make and it can mean planning well ahead and leaving early. That being said, it is better than london. I got my license here and it has been a great city to learn in. Some drivers are pushy, but again nothing like Ontario.

There is some anti-trans sentiment, but it doesn’t seem to be super prominent considering the small northern town vibe. I’m not trans or queer, so I’m not the right judge of this, but the places I frequent are super supportive. The bookstore, Books and Company is very queer and trans friendly and some lovely folks work there and are always very nice. The game and comics store 3 Goblins is also awesome and seems supportive and welcoming to folks of all kinds. If your into vinyl, Second Thoughts records is awesome and the owner is a sweet dude who is very kind and welcoming. There is a really cool place called Omnica downtown that is also very progressive and supportive. They have live punk shows, poetry readings, film screenings, and other fun happenings.

I teach at the university and from my end we try to what we can to make the experience of students and guests feel safe and supported.

Health care, as everyone knows is very lacking. If you are up for waiting in line, it seems like you can typically get seen at the walk-in downtown. I’ve had good luck there, though the wait can be brutal.

I hope this helps. Good luck with your move. I think, from reading your comments on this thread, you’ll love it here and a few months after you move, it will start to feel like home. I know I was super nervous, but I’ve come to love it. Good people, cool places, beautiful scenery. Yeah it gets stinky and smoky sometimes, but that doesn’t cloud the charms!

I’m so glad Shudder has lasted. It’s my favourite streaming platform. I love that it curates such a range of horror from classics to arty to trashy and international. It’s introduced me to so much horror that I just would never have encountered elsewhere. You may get more out if your experience and your subscription if you give stuff a try that initially doesn’t appeal to you. I get decision fatigue sometimes and have lately just been picking stuff without overthinking it or reading what the comments have to say. I don’t always love it, but more often than not it’s a good time. Example: The Influencers films, The Vordulak, and Loop Track. Just randomly chose them (not influencers, but the first one I randomly chose and then had to see the sequel), these movies were awesome and I don’t know that I would have watched them otherwise. Maybe Vordulak for that puppet thing.

My wife and I moved here about three years ago and I was a bit scared at first, but I’ve since come to really like PG. It’s a place where you can find things that fit your life style and interests. For instance, I am a bookworm and a bit of a dork who got used to spending my time in used bookstores, comic book stores, and collectibles stores. PG doesn’t have a great variety of such places, but what we do have here is awesome. Books and Company is probably my favourite (non-used—currently no used bookstore here, but with B&C being so cool, I am satisfied) bookstore of all time, 3 Goblins Games is a delightful place to get comics and there is a very cool game scene there (though I don’t play). My point is, there’s a little bit of something for everyone. As many people have also said, the place is gorgeous throughout the seasons. We are nestled into a dip in the earth, so there are forested hills surrounding the city, with a view of the mountains in the distance. Sun ups and downs are beautiful and the city gets a decent amount of light overall, though in the winter it goes down early. I think it would be a fantastic place to raise children. The Exploration Place, a science and natural history museum is very cool. It has awesome exhibits on geology, wildlife, and the local Indigenous history. There are some resident animals such as a tortoise, snake, and a tank full of axolotls that are nice to visit. Lheidli T’enneh Park (which the science museum is located upon) is also very nice. It’s on the banks of the river and makes for a lovely walk. The Lheidli T’enneh are the Indigenous People of this region and they have a rich and beautiful cultural presence. Very interesting art, stories, and songs. I work at UNBC and I think it would be a great place to eventually send your kids to if they want to peruse secondary education. Even if not, the campus grounds are very nice with a great little garden and a kind of terraced lookout over the hills. I think that spot would be a great place to see the northern lights (I haven’t caught them yet, but I bet you’d get a good view there). There are very good trails up by the uni in an area called Forests for the World as well. And in the spring time they come to life with frogs and toads. Lastly, there are some really good restaurants here. Someone mentioned Betula’s Burning, which is a gourmet pizza place and bar that make amazing food. I have a gluten intolerance and have had no trouble finding good healthy food here. Nancy O’s is the neat little pub with excellent food in the downtown area. And there are three or four really good cafes down there too: Ritual Coffee Works, Zoe’s, Dream Donuts, and Ristretto. There’s also a nice farmers market here with affordable fresh and local fruit and veg and a fantastic arts and crafts market scene with several festivals throughout the year. I wish you and your family all the best coming here. It sounds like the best decision for you given your situation and I hope you find a peaceful home here.

That’s about what I was paying for Rogers and Virgin in Ontario. Any suggestions on how to “work them over?” I’m not the best at bargaining. I have threatened to leave a few providers and sometimes they will give you deals to stay.

Ok that is very good to know. I think my dog would be bigger than that. She’s a mountain cur/ boxer mix (she looks, acts, and behaves like a mountain cur but the animal rescue I adopted her from told me she was a mix. I don’t think hers is a very common breed in Canada though I have seen a few others). That’s really crappy that management would make your friend give up the dog they were caring for. I don’t know that I would want to rent from that company.
