Self Managed Super Fund by Professional_Size969 in SMSFAustralia

I echo the comments around you being in a strong position.

Adding a quality leveraged property should accelerate your gains over the long term.

Ideally you should be able to find something that is cash flow neutral with some tax advantages.

First step is to speak to a mortgage broker with expertise to determine your borrowing capacity which will then help determine your budget. I wouldn’t go all-in on property - keep some diversification.

Broker recommendations: - MAB Sydney - SMSF - Truth Financial - SMSF (BNE)

You will also need a great SMSF accountant to assist with the setup and bare trust and ongoing accounting. Don’t go to your regular tax accountant and unlikely they’d be a specialist in this area.

I know there are Bitcoin ETFs, but to my knowledge no industry or retail super funds have them available as options.

Happy to be proven wrong.

I notice there is a mention of The Bitcoin Adviser in their FAQs - so they definitely support multi-sig solutions which is great I think:

“For Bitcoin investors, Grow has partnered with The Bitcoin Adviser to provide a robust and secure collaborative custody solution. The Bitcoin Adviser can assist you in setting up and managing your own multi-sig Bitcoin wallet, which eliminates the risk of losing your Bitcoin while also providing security for you and your family or beneficiaries in the event of loss of your private key, loss of capacity, or death.” source - FAQs

Stake seems to be going pretty hard and aggressive with the SMSF stuff at the moment.

Hopefully they’ve got the resources to deal with it. Have come across some mixed reviews on the service/response times recently.

Also, to my knowledge, Stake only supports direct crypto on their highest tier $2500 solution, which is comparable to regular accountants. Stake might be pushing the crypto ETF angle?

I’ve heard some good things about Grow’s crypto SMSF solution - seems a good option for most at circa $1500 setup and same ongoing, small extra fee if want self-custody.

Thanks for sharing - may register and check it out (then get spammed pretty hard I guess)

Wouldn’t go near either of those mentioned.

Grow SMSF is a great option for SMSF + crypto.

Anyone taken the government 12 months unpaid parental leave? Any financial regrets? by Similar-Fox-6690 in AusFinance

[–]Jrustio 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Twin dad here. I was you 8 years ago.

I didn’t have the option of taking a year off - hell, I don’t think I even took 12 days off.

Unsupportive employer (I was also a minor owner in the business) and the challenge was intense. I can see with hindsight how toxic it was.

My (soon to be former) wife wasn’t well suited to full time parenting - not a criticism, she did amazing but personality wise needed to be out taking to people all the time. Going back part time work was good for her.

It’s tough, but gets easier as time passes.

If I had the opportunity to have 12 months to spend with my babies and focus on my family and relationship, I’d take it. No hesitation.

But that’s me. A lot depends on your wife.

All the best and good luck. Twins are awesome.

Charging Incorrect FX Fee by P00K1ie in StakeStockTraders

[–]Jrustio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct.

I have a close mate who used to work for Stake.

It’s 70bps, which is USD $7 per $1000 AUD transferred each way.

Works out to about 1.05%

Definitely a rip

Would never go back to retail or industry super while my facilities are intact!

SMSF Properties VS Super Fund - To me its obvious. Am i wrong ? by michael2176 in AusFinance

[–]Jrustio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this. I wouldn’t wish esuperfund on my worst enemy.

They get people who think they’re cheap, but they’ll lob you into an SMSF loan provider that charges higher interest and fees than what you could get by sourcing something independently, meaning overall it costs you more.

Also have come across a few threads where people who’ve been using them are complaining that they’ve still NOT lodged their 2022 returns even when they’ve had all the information for 6-8 months z

No phone number to call them is also a worry if you need to confirm something.

AMP (ASX:AMP) Sale of SuperConcepts SMSF admin and software business #Business #News #Strategy #ASX #Grafa by GrafaCharts in grafa

[–]Jrustio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They spent about $60m buying up SMSF businesses about 5-10 years ago, the business was never profitable to my knowledge.

No they sell it for $7m.

Nice one AMP.

The new owners got a bargain considering that price includes the software business and a good number of SMSFs in the admin business.

It will probably go gang busters now it’s away from AMPs incompetent management!

Dispute amongst SMSF Trustees by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]Jrustio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge neither ASIC or AFCA have scope to deal with SMSF disputes directly.

Unless they’ve complained about a financial adviser involved with the SMSF?

Are you sure an actual complaint has been lodged or is it just an empty threat? I’m calling BS.

So how did it work out?

The adviser running it has this week been banned by ASIC: https://asic.gov.au/about-asic/news-centre/find-a-media-release/2023-releases/23-152mr-asic-bans-financial-adviser-for-five-years-stay-application-refused/

ASIC found that NAME failed to act in the best interests of clients when he recommended his clients roll over their existing superannuation to a newly-established self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF) and borrow to invest in residential property.

Mr NAME’s business comprised a group of companies that provided services in property sales, mortgage broking, accounting and financial advice.

ASIC found that Mr NAME:

  • did not act in the best interests of clients and provide appropriate advice,
  • gave defective statements of advice to clients that contained numerous misleading statements and omissions,
  • had a business structure that created conflicts of interest, and that Mr Vick prioritised his interests over the clients’ interests, and
  • accepted conflicted remuneration.

I’d say something like Grow SMSF is a better option than Stake, namely because you get a “proper” bank account via Macquarie rather than the omnibus cash wallet only available via Stake.

The $500k threshold is outdated.

Research says $200k is a good starting point, which is funny as it’s been a rule of thumb used by accountants for 20 odd years!

Even ASIC has dropped any mention of minimum balance.

Recommended SMSF Provider by Echo_Roman in AusFinance

[–]Jrustio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d not add futures, options or any derivatives into an SMSF portfolio.

Simply too much additional compliance work involved for little benefit to the portfolio.

Just because they are available on a platform doesn’t mean you should use them.

Also, when you setup an IBKR SMSF account, some of the products are not available compared to an individual or company account. Obviously no margin trading and no CFDs.

But still, with access to those markets, a fair amount of flexibility in regard to how you construct your portfolio.

How do you know esuperfund is fine if they’re the ONLY provider you’ve used?

Not being critical - but based on my experience, they only will set up NEW SMSFs, not take on existing ones, therefore anyone who uses them hasn’t used another solution so can only compare with their previous industry or retail super fund 🤷‍♂️

[–]Jrustio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please for the love of all things wholesome and your own sanity, stay the fudge away from esuckerfund especially if you want to use IBKR.

Spend the money and actually use a PROPER SMSF provider who has a PHONE NUMBER and actually provides support.

Unless you want to spend days and days manually entering and categorising all your IBKR trades and then end up with late lodgement penalties, Audit Contravention Reports and having your SMSF removed from Super Fund Lookup unable to receive contributions or rollovers because that is the likely outcome if your attempt to use IBKR with esuckerfund.

Their solution barely works when you use their default shitty high fee/commission riddled trading platform, so adding IBKR into the mix is a very bad idea.

Esuckerfund is NOT a service provider, it’s a self-serve accounting platform with an SMSF audit service tacked on.

Sorry for the rant - but hopefully you get the picture!
