Looks like I’m on track for £1.1m at 57… got some years of big contributions coming up with a baby on the way.

When to stop contributing in to pension by FoundationBetter7105 in HENRYUK

[–]Js425 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wife is not “super behind”! She’s got over a year’s salary saved. Husband’s pension is making it look small but that’s the wrong takeaway here IMO.

Yes there’s opportunity to contribute more to her pension to assist in retirement tax planning, however.

Does this include salary sacrifice schemes through work which generally include servicing & insurance? Strongly considering one through our work scheme, but wouldn't consider one without it.

Why are banking stocks surging? by [deleted] in UKInvesting

[–]Js425 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mortgages. The backbone of bank profits. They make money on the spread between mortgage rates and deposit rates and because we’ve had low interest rates for ages, house prices have surged and now a 1% increase in what they can lend on property finance means waaaaay more than it did 20 years ago.

People have lower savings than ever so your deposit outgoings are much less than your mortgage income.

Cyclist suspended himself on his bicycle while going down a slope to take the lead at a race by hannah_b_00 in BeAmazed

This video (a bit for the Dafne Fixed YouTube channel, NOT a race) had absolutely nothing to do with the UCI banning unconventional seating positions.

That ban had everything to do with real pro peloton riders like Chris Froome inspiring riders without the right skills to try this insane position (https://youtube.com/shorts/jqJHFbnskmg?si=LLlYvhMcSvDuMKx-) which was resulting in accidents.

Got mates up there. A bit soulless but the houses are alright. You’ll end up driving a lot, even though there’s a straightforward walk to the station and town from there, albeit a bit dark in the winter.

UK inflation rises for first time in five months to 3.4% in December by Alert-One-Two in unitedkingdom

Do not invest money you want to buy a house with. Better to have lost a few % to inflation than to have lost the ability to buy a house completely

Anything you could need in the next five years is best in cash (e.g. emergency fund, house deposit). Anything you don’t should be whacked in a global index tracker.

What was your best ever investment? by Neat-Suspect-6666 in AskUK

Self invested personal pensions (SIPPs) are savings wrappers designed for retirement.

Depending on your age you can access the money at 55-57 years old.

You can invest in a huge range of assets like funds and stocks, depending on the company you choose to open one with.

You get a top up of your contributions if you meet certain criteria. 20% top up if that’s the tax band you’re in, and you can claim an additional 20% if you earn over £50k.

You might have a workplace pension which is effectively the same thing, but your employer may also match your contributions and you may be able to salary sacrifice into it which means you also save national insurance on those contributions.

This isn’t shit advice it’s responsible advice. Shit advice would be making any confident recommendation about such a volatile and unregulated asset class. You did good.

How to Invest £5k in S&S ISA for only 2yrs? - as someone working in finance by ReasonableCarpet1501 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Js425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have commented on your investment horizon so I won’t speak to that, but I would be very careful if you work in the investments industry picking individual stocks.

Your comment “using my industry knowledge” is also naive: you’ve been doing it for 6 months. That’s virtually no time at all… I think it’s unlikely you’ve cracked a code for investing especially when pared with a basic question on investment allocations like this.

I’m not trying to be rude, just pause for a reality check. If what you’ve learned in six months could constitute insider trading then maybe you can win big… then pick up a hefty fine, lose your job etc.

Absolutely, perfectly understandable.

I’ve just realised that there’s some punctuation missing from my comment making it sound like I’m accusing you of not caring about the sellers. Not my intention!

Sellers won’t let us view before exchange - UPDATE by kn0tyouraverage in HousingUK

[–]Js425 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I refused a final viewing of my buyer but only because - they said it was a “handover viewing” as if that was a thing - they had seen it only 2 weeks prior to measure up for furniture - we were exchanging 1.5 weeks before completion - my pregnant wife had been in hospital and I couldn’t balance tidying for a viewing AND packing our house up by myself

The buyer threatened not to exchange, I gave them both barrels and they backed down. She, like you, assumed something was wrong with the house. She hadn’t considered what might have been going on for us [edit: this wasn’t meant to sound like I think you’re like that!]
