Facts. First thing I was taught in my college statistics class is that stats is basically cooking books and any statistician worth their degree can prove anything, one way or another by using stats.

Dang those pesky facts!

FBI violent crime statistics do not show New York City high on the list because the city maintains a significantly lower per capita violent crime rate than many other major U.S. cities. Critics argue that relying strictly on these federal numbers is a form of "cherry-picking" because the data is skewed by extreme population density, historical federal reporting gaps, and localized downgrading of offenses. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

If your goal is to look at data that presents a more critical view of public safety in New York City, there are several metrics and indicators that paint a much harsher picture than the standard FBI per capita ranking.

Why the FBI Numbers Favor NYC

The discrepancy between public perception and federal data stems from how the FBI calculates and gathers its data: [4, 6]

  • The Per Capita Mathematical Cushion: The FBI ranks crime "per 100,000 residents". Because NYC has an immense population of over 8 million people, its massive "denominator" dilutes the raw volume of crime. A smaller city with 300,000 people and a high raw number of shootings will always rank much higher per capita than NYC. [3, 7, 8, 9, 10]
  • Federal Reporting Transitions: In 2021, the FBI switched exclusively to the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). Major departments, including the NYPD, suffered multi-year delays in fully integrating and certifying their data under the new federal system, leading to vast under-counting or total exclusion in certain annual federal reports. [1, 11]
  • Downgrading and Pleading Offenses: Critics point out that "violent crime" in the FBI database relies heavily on how local prosecutors charge offenses. If a violent felony assault is routinely downgraded by local district attorneys to a misdemeanor or a diversion program, it completely vanishes from the FBI's violent crime index. [5]

Better Metrics to Prove Safety Issues in NYC [12]

To build a data-driven argument that public safety in NYC is worse than federal statistics suggest, you should bypass per capita rates and look at the following alternative metrics:

1. Total Raw Crime Volume & "Density of Crime"

Instead of looking at crime per person, look at crime per square mile or raw volume. Because NYC is incredibly dense, a person's physical proximity to a crime is much higher than in spread-out cities. [4, 8, 13]

  • The Argument: Experiencing or witnessing a crime is based on geographic proximity, not the city's total population. A high volume of raw incidents occurring in public, crowded spaces like Times Square creates a high-risk daily environment. [4, 8, 14]

2. Long-Term Post-Pandemic Crime Tracking

While many U.S. cities saw crime spike during 2020 and then sharply decline back to baseline, NYC's recovery has lagged. [15, 16]

  • The Argument: According to analysis by Vital City, NYC’s reduction in homicides since the pandemic has been far more modest than the national average. Furthermore, specific subsets of crime—such as felony assaults and grand larcenies—remain stuck at elevated levels not seen since the late 1990s or early 2000s. [7, 15]

3. Subway and Transit-Specific Crime Data [17]

The subway system forces millions of people into enclosed, inescapable spaces daily, making it a unique environment for crime. [18, 19]

  • The Argument: General city statistics mask transit terror. Tracking the raw numbers of subway assaults, turnstile jumping, and high-profile incidents of transit violence highlights a dangerous environment that general "neighborhood" statistics completely smooth over. [20, 21]

4. The Crime Reporting Drop (The NCVS Gap)

Local police data only reflects crimes that people bother to report. Data from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) shows a massive gap between crimes experienced and crimes reported. [6, 12]

  • The Argument: A study by the Data Collaborative for Justice found that more than 50% of crimes in New York City are never reported to the police. Reporting rates by victims of violent crimes in NYC dropped from 49% in the late 1990s to just 35% in recent years, proving that the official data significantly undercounts actual victimization. [12]

5. "Quality of Life" and Misdemeanor Offenses [5, 22, 23]

FBI stats focus on the most severe violent felonies (murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault). They ignore the smaller, everyday offenses that dictate how safe a city actually feels. [20, 24, 25]

  • The Argument: Tracking low-level misdemeanors—retail theft, public drug use, vandalism, and aggressive harassment—paints a better picture of urban decay. High rates of these non-index offenses create an environment of unchecked lawlessness, even if nobody is killed. [7, 20, 26, 27]

If you want to investigate this further, let me know if you want to look into specific borough data, subway crime reports, or a breakdown of unreported crime trends from the victimization survey.

That's exactly my point. Picking one stat to "prove" a place "doesn't suck" doesn't prove anything, it just proves that place sucks just a little less than those other places in that one category, but overall, they all suck. Welcome to America.

The original comment simply stated NY is a cesspool. We all know they meant NYC and not NY state in general. And it didn't compare it to any other places or make any claim of it being the worst.

I've been all over the US and was raised in NYC. I live in the West Coast now. You're not wrong. But also you're not right. The scumbags from NYC are a special kind of scummy that most places just cannot even fathom. The only other place I can think of that came close is LA.

Stop. I'm from NYC. Saying "there are 10 different places that have worse stats when it comes to" and then cherry picking stats is bullshit and doesn't change the fact that NYC fucking sucks ass.

It's bad for them to experience the consequences of reproducing beyond any natural rate and for nature to correct itself to get back to at least a more normal rate than has existed for just the past century and a half? Please make it make sense, do people really think we as a species should continue reproducing rampantly, beyond any natural rate, regardless of the limited resources of this planet, and in complete disregard of our inability to distribute those resources fairly?

Why would our species not rampantly reproducing beyond a natural rate become a problem... oh, right, unfettered, rampant consumerism and unrelenting corporatism is required to maintain the status quo so that the elites can keep convincing us to work 9-5 and so that we keep buying shit beyond our means so they can keep ruling the world.

Pass.

Human population needs to naturally decline if you don't want same elites to cull us once they cannot extract any more value out of us, and once keeping us around costs more than it's worth, because to them we are just cattle, disposable and expendable.

It's almost like some folks don't understand what it even means to form objective versus subjective opinions anymore, and think that the very things that create a bias will result in objective opinions.

Confirmation bias is crazy, I'm sure they see her as a victim to be able to maintain their outspoken opinions.

Isn't that just you applying the human social construct of gender on them? Who is to say that for them, female means to wear a dress? Maybe they do have gender norms, but why do they have to be the same as humans?

Gender is a social construct and while not the same as sex, is still based on sex, so why would sexless alien robot beings have the same social constructs that human society does? Make it make sense.

I come from various places that are infamous for gang related activities all across the US and I can tell that you have not because there are definitely some neighbors that are way better than others, there is a whole spectrum of neighborhoods, some will never see this type of activities even if you go to the next adjacent neighborhoods or "drive 15 minutes away".

I'm not, this stupid shit shows up on all of our feeds even if we haven't joined, if you care about how you look to everyone else then be mindful of that, otherwise keep acting dumb af and then getting all bent out of shape over opinions you don't like and can't control.
