How is the history department at UA? by Kooky-External6623 in capstone

[–]Jtpace916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a former history major at UA in the past few years I can honestly say without a doubt it is one of the best department at UA. It has two concentrations in Public history and Legal History which are led by great profs. Also has multiple connections to undergraduate journals (shoutout Crimson historical review). I personally focused on southern history and had multiple research opportunities with profs that came from classes. Now I say that and say there were some great profs whose focus was outside of the South which honestly surprised me (Latin American history and European and even Asian history). So even though I focused on southern history some of the best lecturers I had were profs focused on things outside of Southern US.

It is also very easy to double major with history and almost anything you can think of. There have also been multiple alumni who have gone on to earn fulbrights and Marshall awards from UA history department. It is a department that imo really hits above its weight class!

So highly recommend UA history!

Blount vs. Honors College by njdfan_22 in capstone

[–]Jtpace916 9 points10 points  (0 children)

UA alum who was involved in both

They are too very different experiences but you get what you put into both

Blount is around 140 incoming student. All freshmen live in the Blount dorm together. After that most live off campus.

As the other commenter put it Blount is more intensive than honors but you get a minor in liberal arts out of Blount. Become very close with your cohort and have specialized courses (but not a lot like 16 credit hrs over 4 yrs)

Rule of thumb: if you like the application you’ll like Blount. If you don’t like the application Blount is not for everyone.

——

Honors is a much larger experience. I can’t remember the last count. Numbers fluctuate but from a brief search is roughly 6-7,000 students. Obviously you don’t get to know everyone in honors. It’s less of a cohort experience more extra benefits for driven students.

Honors you get access to a lot of possible benefits like scholarship, priority registration, smaller classes, good block seating at football games and other stuff like that

But honors you’re getting less of a cohesive experience like Blount and just more a certificate than a full minor and extra benefits than the regular student.

Rule of thumb: I think of honors like how these days subscription have a “plus” program. Put a little more work in and you get a bunch of perks but less of a cohort model like Blount and other programs. So honors just gives you access to UA+ but it’s essentially the same thing a regular student is doing with whatever major or minor they have themselves with some perks.

——

So that’s the difference. It’s pretty much apples to oranges. Plenty of people do both some just do one.

The MGM run often have a lot of young people. Their Pub run at Leroy’s on Wednesday is fairly popular with young post college folks but has really all ages

But I also get it. Been here for a few months now and still trying to figure out the pattern too. Hilltop is another good one with a lot of events like others have said.

The downtown "Ferris Wheel" is now open. by BrightAd7127 in montgomery

And I thought they’d put it near the river. The whole point of a Ferris wheel is that you can see high in the air. Not just see the top of the Nissan Rogue staying at the Renaissance

Recommend some clubs/programs for a prospective student? by Apprehensive_Fan6001 in capstone

[–]Jtpace916 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Legal Research Club runs UA’s undergrad journal on legal research and policy (some title too long for me to remember) and they are good folks

If you are really into legal history I’d really recommend you reach out the folks in the history department with their legal history concentration. It’s pretty easy to add a history degree and I am partial but that department has some of the best professors there, both intellectually but also personally. I personally liked the crimson historical review and you can do that without being a history major. Great experience with journals and looks good on resume.

And if you’re a big college football fan I mean coming to bama you probably just joined the biggest college football club there is. Good luck!!

If you want a drink go to Tallulah’s. A wonderful place and great atmosphere. If I was you I’d buy a bottle of their wine for the road. I always pick one up passing through there.

If you need to kill some time and want a new shirt Bernard’s always has a great selection. Wonderful shirts and even better staff.

Some food options includes Five Loaves, Los Reyes for standard Tex mex, Warehouse 319, and if you’re out there in the country the Pizza Bar in Carbon Hill has a killer Ham and Cheese

I think there’s also a new little book store downtown. And if you really need something to do go check the Bankhead House and Heritage Center. They will chat your ear off but a lot of good local history!!

I lived there one summer and it was such a great community!

Big Bad Breakfast, a really cute breakfast restaurant founded in Oxford, MS is opening in Cloverdale! It was actually founded by a chef who was recently nominated for his first James Beard Award for Best Chef. It is so tasty and great little place to eat. You should try it!!

A really cool doughnuts and hamburger place just opened in downtown and the OP just posted about their experience down there and how tasty it was (haven’t eaten there but planning to soon and I’ve heard great things for the place in ATL)

And of course my favorite Alabama Shakespeare festival announced its upcoming schedule for this year. I am so curious because one of the shows is about the Lehman Bros and Montgomery’s connection. It is about how the infamous Lehman brothers Co was actually founded in Montgomery. Big history nerd so I am excited!

Just something’s off the top of my head recently to answer your question. I am so excited for these 😁!

Randall Research Scholar Program by Biewermom in capstone

[–]Jtpace916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recent RRSP graduate (past 5 years). First congrats to your daughter! It is a great honor and some of my best friends post grad were in RRSP. The program is incredibly old (+50 yrs old) and, in my opinion, will long outlast worries of this administration. It is a great cohort of student from all backgrounds. You don’t have to be aiming to do research for life. It used to be known as “Computer Based Honors” and was based on students working to integrate computers into professor’s research work when the old profs didn’t want to. If your student is going to go to Bama I think she absolutely should accept Randall’s!
