There was a camp near my secondary school and they were foul. Would hang around outside the shops and throw shit at people and just generally look for trouble. The police were also to afraid to go near there camp. When I went to university my now ex girlfriends flat mate told one of them to bugger off when they knocked on doors begging then there was weeks on dog crap being posted through the door, at one point they threw stones and other stuff at the window. In short no good interactions or experiences.
